What is spiritism? In this documentary video with English subtitles I am going to tell you about the origin of spiritualism, about the person who created it as a doctrine, Allan Kardec, and about its history, with cases like that of the Fox sisters or the rivalry that was established between the writer Arthur Conan Doyle and the magician Harry Houdini.
Do you believe in spirits? Do human beings have an immortal soul that endures after our death and with which the living can communicate?
Today's topic, spiritism, is controversial, because beliefs about it are very diverse and personal, so I'm going to talk about spiritism from a historical point of view.
What is the spirit? Without going into the different conceptions of each religion, it could be said that it is the set of all the immaterial characteristics of a person, those that make him up as a unique individual, his personality. Does the spirit survive after the death of the body? Can we communicate or interact in any way with the spirit of a deceased?
The belief in spirits as ethereal and immortal entities dates back to the dawn of human societies, but spiritism as such, that is, the science that studies the nature, origin and destiny of spirits, was born in the 19th century , by the hand of the French educator Hippolyte Léon Denizar Rivail, better known as Allan Kardec, author of 'The Book of Spirits'.
But communication with spirits has always been full of light and shadow. In fact, a few years before Allan Kardec officially created spiritism, there had been a fairly famous and controversial case in the United States, that of the Fox sisters.
For his part, the writer Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of the popular detective Sherlock Holmes, was also a fervent spiritualist. In 1887 he began to study psychic phenomena and in 1893 he joined the London Society for Psychical Research. The following year, he investigated a case of poltergeists in Devon. When World War I broke out, 55-year-old Doyle tried to enlist, arguing that he still had vigor and a loud voice, but was turned down. The one they did accept was their son Kingsley, who sadly passed away from pneumonia contracted in the war. That loss brought the writer closer to spiritualist circles; in addition, his second wife, Jean Leckie, was a medium. Doyle wrote a book on the history of spiritism and his beliefs led him to become enmity with the famous magician Harry Houdini.
