Spiritual Unfoldment with John Butler

Күн бұрын

How do you bring spiritual awareness to everyday life? This conversation takes it's theme from one of the classic texts of Christian literature - 'Practising the Presence of God' - the teachings of Brother Lawrence, Carmelite monk and cook (maybe a fryer), and a popular best seller of the 17th century. John Butler brings his 'common sense' approach to all our everyday lives - our jobs. Even 'McJobs' - fryers of fries - can be personal portals to greater self awareness. You can make your own assessment of how it applies to your job.
For your free copy of John's poem 'Clouds' join the email community here - spiritualunfoldment.co.uk.
John has his first DVD out now - 'A Good Farmer' - which includes the original 1975 BBC documentary 'Three Acres at Bicker Fen' - spiritualunfoldment.co.uk/sto....
John has a new book out. 'Mystic Beginnings'. How can one live unfenced and free within limits of human existence? Or satisfy love’s insatiable need in a world of ‘Yes’ and ‘No’? Describing the long, slow development of spiritual awareness, ‘Mystic Beginnings’ leads the reader through John Butler’s boyhood and army days … to wide, open spaces in Australia, farming, injury and business … bursting out to ‘Make the world a better place’ and, chastened, to return … back to farming, meditation, first stormy days of marriage and, then, in 1984, at the age of 47 - to see a woman as he’d never seen before … This book was written soon afterwards in an attempt to understand.
You can buy it here - spiritualunfoldment.co.uk/sto...
The Second Edition of 'Mystic Forbearance - in Russia' is out. Just over 100 years ago, the Russian Revolution started - man replaced God and the world began to change. From her homeland convulsed by civil war - like countless others with family uprooted and destroyed, a lost and lonely refugee, Mother was sent to England where, eventually she married and bore 2 children. At the age of 55, I returned to Russia for several years to rediscover my roots and incidentally write the notes which form the basis of my latest book, ‘Mystic Forbearance - in Russia’. This 2nd edition, with additions and corrections replaces the earlier, named ‘Oh, Russia’. It’s a large book of 600 pages, which cover almost every aspect of human existence, facing the great question of how spirit can strengthen to bear an unbearable world. John Butler - 2019

I’ve been up since 3am with incredible agitation, as today marks the fourth anniversary of a very painful loss. There are other worries on my mind, just difficult circumstances. I had a video suggestion in my news feed, and here I am. If I had the means, I would come and sit in the stillness, to learn how to quiet my entire being through osmosis (I have a feeling just sitting quietly in the presence of someone like Mr. Butler helps and strengthens weak ones like me) . I love the example of the potato. I have Brother Lawrence’s book, and this inspires me to read it again. Thank you for your hopeful and calming words.

We are created as spiritual beings the awakening comes from discovering the presence of God/Jesus as an individual person. As the relationship deepens so the presence of God is an integral part of you. Something that is always there and naturally becomes in every facet of daily life. Being still and letting God's presence soak in visually, audibly just listening. Setting aside the busyness of the world and finding the Joy of God's presence.

If only there were more johns in this world;teaching this type of wisdom, calmness, and ethics of yesteryear. Life would hold a better meaning for us all. Thankyou John..you remind me of my own dear father ,who through being born in a era of simpleness and respectful ethics;made it a delight to be around and capture such integrity in its purest form..kindness and goodness you can pass on to less invested beings. This is a characteristic we should all build upon in our life’s..strive to be kinder unto others and kind unto ourselves.. This is a beautiful world and God designed us to stop ,and see it ..the sky,the flowers the birds;it’s all there if you look. It is wonderful creation of design in its entirety.

Interesting point about how joy can be experienced even in what seem to be mundane activities. Remember well my forestry days, planting trees on a hillside in the pooring rain and experiencing God's peace and joy in just doing my work. The things of God are often not logical to our natural human perspective. The brain can be a huge stumbling block.

I had it in my childhood and youth. The ability to be absorbed in nature and the change of seasons. And, I did not like in any place remotely as beautiful as rural england. But I had it. But after my mid 30s, it has sli jpped a bit. Working for moeny in a job which does not give you the satisfaction of seeing a job well done wears out that peace. Even if the job pays well, it takes your ability to dwell in joy

Up to this point, I think I understood that you can feel the presence of God, or love, in a still field, in grass, in nature, or in the focus of the present, say, on your work. I think you can also feel it during your pain, or suffering, as it helps you overcome it, and come out stronger. Or if it helps you.. However, I cannot bring myself to find neither God, nor love, in the suffering of others, be them humans or animals. Yes, you can see love in those that try to help, but I'm not able to see it in the pain of others.

And you're doing just the right thing John by being in the presence picking up the digital challenge and giving so many people guidance in their search for a more meaningful life. One additional thought on modern technological, maybe it helps us to realize in the end that the "old ways of our ancestors" were in fact more sustainable and expedient. Looking at the world right now one could come to the conclusion the old way was definitely more in balance with the environment. Thank you for sharing these videos with us John and Phil 🙏

What john said is true, if you are tuly present in the moment, even something as washing your hands, feeling the water around your hands or even the act of sitting down and being aware of your surroundings and thinking what wonderful color those plants are or how nice the sound of the birds is, it gives you the greatest joy in life. 😊 from there on you can say that God is always present all around you, its just that people fail to see it. But he is truly everywhere.

I love the description of working with your hands, paying attention, anticipating the motions of the plate, analyzing the dish soap, etc.. What about different parts being one is so good? What's the aesthetic basis for the value of "oneness" and "ever present stillness" as opposed to some alternative? We take the same route to work every day, but we never truly know it, not because of some undiscovered detail but because there never really is any knowing something. Well, anyways, that dish soap talk really did it for me. Push all my buttons, John!

I love the optimism and his ability to reconcile things. I have wondered for years now about how to interpret the displacement of "old religion" as he refers to it, and it is nice to finally have someone discuss that.
