V85TT is an underrated bike for the price. I picked one up last year and I ride it daily (when im not buried in snow lol). my other 2 bikes have been relegated to strictly off road (300cc 2 stroke) and hard off road adventure 790R. anything else I grab the keys to my Guzzi, such an enjoyable ride especially when you dump the boat anchor instal a Y pipe and a nice aftermarket can.... riding bliss

I bought a 2020 V85 Travel on a whim and was very pleasantly surprised. Unless you need to feel your eyes pushed back into the back of your head power, the V85 will put a smile on your face. It’s not a race bike-it’s an air-cooled 850 with shaft drive! However…… Get rid of the cat with a y pipe and it sounds pretty darn good. Add an angostini or mistral pipe with a mild tune and you’ll have a hard time keeping from wrapping the throttle. Still won’t win any races but you’ll have lots of fun. The bike actually handles better than you’d expect.

Very cool video as I actually have these two bikes in my garage. The R9T is the equivalent of a sports car (reminds me of a Porche) sexy, lots of torque and very fast with a stiff suspension. The V85 is just a great all-around bike. Enough power for town rides and highways, capable enough off-road to get you through dirt roads without issues, its good looking and most important for me it’s super comfortable. Like Spike said “A couch on 2-wheels”. My favorite hands down: the V85TT.

Definitely the Moto Guzzi for me. I will be 68 in March and am 6'5" 280Lbs with a 32" inseam. Living in South Dakota, we have a fair amount of unpaved roads and a lot of miles between major towns and cities. Long distance comfort, good road manners, and a high MPG are a must out here. I already own a Victory Vision Tour which is a great mile muncher, but at 900lbs a little much for running around town and a little hairy on dirt and gravel. The Guzzi would be a great second motorcycle for both commuting and as a back up bike for long trips. The down side is that the nearest dealer is about 150 miles away as the crow flies. Thanks for the fair review,

To all you newer riders, especially the younger ones: I just got back from a 1 hour ride on a Kawasaki VN 750 cruiser on twisty, hilly, mountainous gravel roads on the Foothills near Skyline Drive. More challenging than the off-road sections showed in the video. My advice is don't spend anymore than you would need to get a Himalayan; in fact you can spend half as much. If you're going to do a lot of off-road work get a dual purpose bike between a 250 and a 650. But even on gravel roads more challenging than the ones shown here I had a great time on my Vulcan 750. And I own a TW200, XT225, and the DR650. (Now I'm not recommending any other cruiser, and I've had a lot.) Use the $6-7,000 you'll save for trips gear and time off work. I've been riding since 1975 and have over two dozen bikes. Do yourself a favor and listen to an old man looking out for you!

@@schrodingersmechanic7622 That's an excellent choice! Finding the right fit for each rider is very important. So for me: The taller seat on the CRF is harder on my hip joint the day after compared to an XT. Also the XT compresses to a lower seat height when my weight is on it. And a used XT is cheaper than a CRF, another consideration. Also XT has a six-speed transmission. Is the CRF 5 speed or 6 speed? I got my XT 225 for $2,000 with 12,000 mi. So it's a great choice for an older, shorter, guy on a budget. The CRF300 is a better bike on a spreadsheet comparison, though.

I tend to be on the same page as Whitney. I like the bikes that somehow escape the bean counters and were passion projects. The v85 is cool, but the actual R9T scrambler with spoke wheels is way better as an esoteric all roads mount for me. I'd put the V85 against the F850, really. I might match her R9t against a V9 or something of the bobber/standards from Gootsie. It's important not to crucify the quirky bikes on the altar of precision marketing targets and absolute flavor of the month market niches. They're both great bikes that have wonderful quirky character. It just depends on what kind of weirdo you are and what weird thing are you going to do with them, which is usually the way you have epic fun on a motorcycle.

Moto Guzzi makes addictive, solid, rider-conceived motorcycles. They last and are really wonderful things that age well. I rode many BMW’s for years, bought many new and used older ones from the late 1970s up through 2015. Now I don’t. I still like some older ones, R-69s, R-75, R-90, R-100 and especially R-80 G/S. But the 2007-ish to now, I tried but they lost me. The newer, the less I like them unfortunately and I do not like feeling that way. The brand new ones are just not so nice to ride- or to own, in my opinion. I think I’m not alone, but not sure as I’m not really a hater and don’t want to go around talking bad but there it is. And I’ve had two bikes with the engine that is on the 9T there. It’s a sort of harsh and buzzy motor, some of them have notchy transmissions. Seats, well, no. Seems odd for such a price point. So - didn’t like them that much anymore although I tried almost out of habit or loyalty or hope or something, but liked them less anyway as time went on. To the point that when the follow-on water boxer engine series came out, gave a try, didn’t feel it, then when the price point shifted up again as well as the weight, when they got even fussier etc., it was a revelation - and a relief - to happen discover riding around on a Moto Guzzi. Twin, air, shaft, great brakes, good handling, mellow, quality build, serviceable ( though shaft service is not easy, it must me said). There are not enough dealers but it works out for various reasons. Worth a try imo, any model of new Guzzi is really ok enough to try out. They’re all cool, nice to ride around on, interesting and unusual. Some more unusual than others, true enough.

As a former Moto Guzzi 850 owner, I have always wondered what's so great about BMW - So I have now had 2 on extensive rides and owned one( just 4 months), and I got to say, they all suck hard in ways that matter to me as a rider - handling being my number one - BMW just cannot (flat twins) handle, on or off road, as well as that Guzzi. And BMWs are so common - you see them every day but the Guzzi draws attention everywhere, and not just from motorcyclists. Sadly gone from the quiver, replaced by a Ducati Monster S2R1000 now.

This comparison makes no sense. The BMW R9T line is meant to be a "heritage" retro-scrambler. The V85TT is an adventure bike. Two totally different classes of motorcycles and thus have entirely different setups, suspension, riding positions, and equipment. The BMW purposely does not have any of the new modern features, hence the retro-scrambler title. There are several other scramblers you could have compared the BMW to and there are several mid-sized adventure bikes that would have been good comparisons for the V85TT. I think the V85TT is a great mid-sized adventure bike, with a lot of the BMW R1200GS character in a smaller package. I would love to see it compared to the Tenere 700, Toureg 660, and KLR 650.

I was truly amazed by the moto guzzi when I spent a weekend on one. Absolutely astounding that they could design something so gorgeous and the engineering team could make the engine just as exciting as instant potatoes. That engine is a snooze fest 😴

It's not helped by the fact that it makes no noise. I bet an exhaust would liven things up. What good is a motorcycle if you can't annoy your neighbors with it?

Dammit shadertree! We went over this. Just because it’s an Italian motorcycle doesn’t mean it’s gonna be a pasta rocket. The engine is only an air cooled pushrod vtwin 850 engine. you can’t expect 1200 performance from it.

I have a Moto Guzzi V7. Same engine, but slightly detuned. The stock exhaust is a snooze fest, agreed. But with the Mistral exhaust, it becomes absolute music.

What a great video! Just my 2 cents why I like it so much: You talk about aspects while demonstrating them (off road capabilities, on road) You aren't just rambling in a helmet mic for the entire video Switching between the 2 views while having a dialogue is refreshing You both have your own honest opinions to give Well edited together. I love the drone views in between.

I'm in the process of switching from BMW to Guzzi. I do like the big boxers and enjoyed my time with the RT, but the new Italian beauty has stolen my heart. So I'm buying a V100 Mandello. In this case, off road, the R1250GS is probably a better bet, but heavy. As you say, the RnineT is more a styling exercise. It's a shame you didn't get to do the Himalayan. I've got a Scram and that is very planted on the dirt.

Another example of appleorangism: the TT85 is an adv bike and the R9T is a scrambler. Either you compare the TT85 to the F850GS or the R9T to the V7 Stornello (which probably also sucks at off-road)
@AZGeek520
@AZGeek520 9 ай бұрын
I have both and the R9T Scrambler is a blast to ride in the mountain twisties, but not off-pavement, and not for 200 mile rides. The V85TT is the better bike for all-around utility and the one I take for long, multi-state rides. Not a perfect bike, but it does a lot of things remarkably well. Thanks for the comparison.

I have a 1200 GS and I think it’s probably the best adventure tourer ever made. However I love Moto Guzzis and I really feel that BMW can get it really right or really wrong. The GS is poetry but the 1800 hundred cruiser and the scrambler just don’t seem to crack it somehow.

I am not shocked that Whitney would get the BMW again. She sorta seems to have a fondness for odd and quirky bikes. I get the draw to kinda the less refined more mechanical raw feel. It is definitely a thing plenty of people enjoy. Me, between the two, the V85TT would win out I think for my personal interests.

I chose the Moto Guzzi V85TT Guardia D'Onore. My other bike is a 2004 Victory Vegas which kinda is like the BMW in that it is old school with lots of torque and cruiser style handling. The Moto Guzzi handles so good in comparison and that makes it a blast to ride on the twisty's. It also does pretty good on tails that aren't too gnarly. The motor in the Victory is it's strong point and I love it for that and the styling is awesome. Two great bikes that are very different. Lucky me!

The Guzzi is a serious attempt at a real middle weight touring bike. Travel, commute, camp, flirt with the twistys. I could live with that bike. The R9T is a bike to be cool on for short trips. There is room for both.

Great video... I've been shopping for a road-oriented adv bike, and the V85TT just keeps winning the mental wrestling match that is new bike shopping... It also helps that the base price includes luggage... the V85 is simple-ish to work on, is reportedly very comfortable, and a competent enough off-roader to easily explore gravel fire roads... If I'm going to ride trails, I'm going to take me EXC-F 500... everyone keeps trying to lump the V85 in the same category as the BMW F850, the KTM 890, and the Tigert 900, but really, I think it's more of a competitor with the V-Strom, the Versys, and the other pseudo-ADV bikes. Thanks for an enjoyable video, and it's given me plenty more to think about. Would you choose the V85TT over a V-Strom 1000?
