I got Core last August in their sale. To me, BBCSO Core has given me my own private orchestra, whose sole job is to play my music, or whatever else takes my fancy. I do miss not having any solo strings or a Cor Anglais, but these can be added from other sources. I didn't need Core to have a piano, as I already have a Roland RD-2000 stage piano (which at present is also being my Cor Anglais.) It seems to me that some very wise and clever people in Spitfire saw a largely untapped market in hobbyist composers like myself, who had no need of a whole bunch of mike positions, and who had neither the budget nor the computing power to run the full Professional version. They then created this Core version to fit that market. And to my mind, it does that admirably. As I said, it's given me my own private orchestra. Even Beethoven didn't have that luxury!

Hi there, thanks for the in-depth video! Quick question, When I load one instrument with one articulation it is about 400mb of ram... that's only one instrument... How did you get it to be only 4gb of total ram of that whole piece? and how many instruments was that? Would appreciate your help a lot! thanks
@DanKeenMusic
@DanKeenMusic 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Reinhardt! I’ll have to look into that more to answer your question fully, but the short answer is to remember that a) there will be some RAW allocated to running the plugin so just one articulation could look like it’s using more RAM than it might actually be, and b) Logic allocates what it thinks it needs to sample libraries so it’s not necessarily accurate as there’s often a buffer. I tend to have one articulation per track (I never liked keyswitching) so you’re not seeing multiple articulations when you see ‘Brass-Longs’ for example

Thanks for this - very helpful & interesting. I know that it is compatible with Dorico (according to Spitfire's site) but do you happen to know if it will pick up most directions directly from a score? (I imagine not the mic positions of course) but would you have to go and manually alter articulations in Reaper afterwards? That would be a lot of work! thanks for any ideas on that.

Many thanks, and what great composition! Hope you don't mind if I proffer: the core mix sounded the best. I think the pro version actually suffered from the extra basses. It was slightly muddy in comparison and either an orchestration or mic choice issue? Core certainly felt brighter and much more clear, without lacking body. I hope you don't think that's bad mannered of me and wonder what you might think?

08:20 just to clarify: Solo Bassoon is actually included in Core as well as most Solo Woodwinds and Brass... not included are the String Section-Leaders and a some low Woodwinds/low Brass instruments... - Bass Flute - Bass Clarinet - Contrabass Clarinet - Contrabassoon - Cor Anglais - Contrabass Trombone - Contrabass Tuba - Cimbasso

Thanks for this video Dan. I enjoyed the composition too. Best of luck with the animation. It would be interesting to see if mode switching becomes a standard practice in time, not just with this library but with others too. I’ve been experimenting with automating mode switching in BBCSO, to help people convert all tracks with one button press. As someone who tried to get into RCM MMus and other opportunities at the start of the century, I’d also be keen to learn about your conservatoire experience too, perhaps as I ended up on a vastly different path - sometimes feel I lost out.

Great review Dan. About to get core and was interested that you used Solo Strings violin with BBCSO. Did you have to tweak the violin much to blend it?
@DanKeenMusic
@DanKeenMusic 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you, glad it was helpful. To create the right blend, I just used a healthy blend of Close and Tree mics on the Solo violin. I found that using the Tree on its own resulted in too reverberant a signal to mix effectively with the BBCSO. The Close helped to dial in that detail

Great review, Dan! Have you experienced any latency as far as MIDI controller implementation (to trigger the samples) and BBCSO (Pro version) are concerned?
@DanKeenMusic
@DanKeenMusic 4 жыл бұрын
No more than usual for me. For short articulations I tend to set the "tightness" dial to at least 50% to feel natural but regimented. In general, latency can be greatly improved by reducing your I/O buffer size. I have mine set to 128 and that feels snappy

Hi, thanks for the nice video. Very inspiring and well explained. I've just ordered the BBC Pro version (still downloading) But I was wondering, did you change any panning in the mix of your composition or did you just recorded out of the box? Great video and an informative watch for those not familiar with the different options of BBCSO. However, I'd argue that this isn't really a "review" video of BBCSO but more like a "comparison" video so that people can work out the differences in sound between the 3 different BBCSO libraries. Perhaps consider refining the title of the video for clarity?

Nice Video, quick questions did you use BBCSO with different librarys ? If yes, how do they perform with them?
@DanKeenMusic
@DanKeenMusic 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Chas, good question and definitely something I'd be willing to go more in-depth with for a future video. The simple answer is that dryer libraries are easier to blend with other samples because of the control you have over reverb. As BBCSO was recorded at Maida Vale Studios, it doesn't have the same reverb tail that their AIR Studios-based libraries have. All of that said, I have found that because BBCSO works so well as an ensemble, I don't often have to combine sections from different libraries these days

I have BBCSO. Compared to Albion, do you feel one is more needed over the other? I’ve been considering Albion 1, but having BBCSO, don’t know if i need it Also, when you mix, do you bounce in place, over just mixing the midi?
@DanKeenMusic
@DanKeenMusic 4 жыл бұрын
Good question! I don’t have Albion 1 so I don’t have much personal experience of it but some things that I know are missing from BBCSO are the cinematic percussion and loops. It could be worth the investment if that’s of interest to you. Personally, I’ve always preferred libraries that have individual instruments - maybe because I’m a sucker for a viola middle harmony! But where does my viola fit in strings high and strings low! 😂

Hello, can you tell me some good material, videos for a beginner who wants to start producing orchestral music with sample libraries? Like some books that layout this stuff precisely, theory/instruments, tranposotion/midi/mixing. or even better some tutorials that are finely produced to show everything you need to know. It doesnt need to be free i just want quality content, and according to your facial expression when you mentioned college, it seems to me that you learned allot more from the internet and actually doing stuff on your own :D so i would greatly appriciate your input because you seem very mature and knowledgable for your age, i want to be on the right track and you know where the heat is :) greetings from Croatia!

Thank you very much. I’d like to respond to this properly in a video so thanks for sparking that conversation. Ultimately, I’d like my channel to become a resource for all of these things, and am working on material to release in the coming months that covers a wide variety of topics. Spitfire Audio’s KZfaq channel taught me a lot about programming and the midi side of things, but I’d recommend getting your hands on some pdfs of score you love and even if you can’t read music just follow along to see how parts interact. Regarding music college (also something I want to go more in-depth about), I learnt a very different set of skills. For production and mixing, there’s a lot of stuff online. For context, I’ve been classically trained since the age of 4. My route through postgrad music college following a music degree was broadening my knowledge of orchestration particularly within film music. For programmers and producers, the classical route wouldn’t really be relevant unless they wanted (as I suspect you do) to pursue the approach of composing orchestral music and getting their hands dirty with manuscript scoring, arranging and orchestration. As I say, more to follow shortly. Thanks again

I think you're right about Discover still being a reflection of quality. My own theory, for what it's worth, is that quite apart from the fact that these are obviously very public-spirited guys, Discover also serves the purpose of being an advertisement for the Spitfire product. And if I'm right, it's a very GOOD advertisement - one that is actually USEFUL to its target audience. They will have gained far more traction from Discover than they ever could from more traditional forms of advertising. And in my case, it most definitely worked. As a hobbyist composer, Discover didn't have what I wanted in order to perform orchestral music realistically, but what it DID do was point me in the direction of what Core could do. I got Core last August in their Winter Sale (they called it a Summer Sale, but it was Winter here). And I'm thoroughly enjoying learning to use Core!
