One Step Ahead is one of my favourite tracks from Mal. Such beautiful simplicity. For anyone who thinks that just because it's simple, it's easy, it just exposes their lack of musical maturity. When it's simple, every note has purpose. A very underrated drummer is Mal Green.

Oh, here it is, the obligatory, ignorant "underrated" comment which is to be found beneath every fucking You Tube video...

This is a great little piece, Mal's one of those rare drummers who plays the song. He just gets it and this is a terrific insight into his contribution to Split Enz overall sound. When true Colours came out I must have listened to it hundreds of times, zeroing in on the drum tracks trying to figure out what was going on in there. Hats off Mal Green.

I absolutely LOVE Mal’s drumming. He is deeply unique and extremely musical. I knew Mal when he lived in Melbourne during the early-mid 80’s, In downtime from Split Enz, he wrote and recorded his own songs. Mal would hire me as a session drummer while he played keyboards and sang because he wanted to concentrate on the song. He’s genuine, warm, honest I was more than honoured to play for him. I (still) hold a great degree of respect. Maz

This is superb. I literally wrote a note to myself to ask Mal about Dizrythmia and Luton. Dizrythmia is a genius work of art, and his rhythms are fucking sublime. I love the use of the kick drum. He's proto metal and sounds like double kick.

Mal entered Split Enz very well and was always fun in the videos, you can really see his personality. But for me Emlyn Crowther was THE Spit Enz drummer. His drum style really fitted well but when they later went more "simple" Mal was a great choice.

That was extremely interesting.I didn't realise you were so instrumental in getting the sound for each song.Yes I got you was very cleverly drummed now I come to think of it,and it mat not have worked with a drummer with less insight into his craft...I found it especially interesting how you explained the light and dark aspects of the I got you track...i.e tom tom,to snare......that really made the song actually...I hope the Finns are grateful to you.......

Clearly knows his limitations so uses his creativity which is rather unusual for a pop drummer as most pop drummers could barely play though there were exceptions. I really like drumming on I got you. Also eighth notes on the floor tom was a very punk thing to do Clem Burke did it a lot as did Budgie, Josh Freese, Topper Headon, Tre Cool all very floor tom heavy.

Are we all gonna just ignore the fact that Charlie is a song about murdering your friend with your bare hands ???
@justingaribaldi7723
@justingaribaldi7723 3 жыл бұрын
It’s a song about killing a girlfriend (or wife). Charlie is a woman. But it’s fictional. Just a story. Just like watching a movie about a crime of passion. So yea, we are going to ignore that fact.
@jeffsimon9594
@jeffsimon9594 Жыл бұрын
@@justingaribaldi7723 *sigh* No, 'Charlie' could be a man *or* a woman (ie. Charles or Charlotte) as could the protagonist for that matter, the ambiguity adds to the mystery. Of course it is fictional, that doesn't prevent it being phenomenally unsettling! Anyway, it is IMHO their best ever song and I happen to know from interviews that several members of the band feel the same.
