In this video we're checking out Split Enz. We only know a couple of their songs, and we are quite aware of what came from them, Crowded House. This will be a fun one. Enjoy!

OMG I can't even begin to describe the feeling I have when I hear Split Enz hits like this. I know these guys are from New Zealand but in my head, this song was a soundtrack of my life in LA in the early 80s when I would listen to KROQ while driving down Sunset Strip and going to New Wave parties. I See Red, I Got You, One Step Ahead, Six Months In A Leaky Boat, Shark Attack, What's The Matter With You, Hard Act To Follow, Message To My Girl, Poor Boy. I loved the Finn bros. I liked Crowded House but Split Enz and Sparks were my jam.

@@natalyamay72 He he, if you start me talking about LA in those days, I won't stop... I saw The Go-Go's and The Germs in the same week when I arrived there. I was a regular Licorice Pizza record store rat, and got hold of all the little known British, Canadian and Australian records there and Tower (XTC, The Photos, Simple Minds, Mi-Sex). It just isn't what it used to be.

Have you heard Eddie Vedder sing this he came to NZ & sang a bunch of spilt enz songs with Neil Finn man he was awesome .It sounds just like a pearl jam song with eddie singing it & eddie said himself that he & his band were highly influenced by them .

@@jonsmith6982 I was aware that Eddie Vedder had taken them as an influence. I did watch what he did with their songs when he performed in NZ. It's good guys like that wave a flag for Enz, instead of it just being me and a few other New Wave freaks that were there at the time.

You know a little about the band? Split Enz didn't change to Crowded House.. After Split Enz disbanded Neil Finn formed Crowded house as a whole new entity, It was later that his brother Tim joined as a guest member

7:28 Split Enz in 1976. My dad hated Split Enz and had little tolerance for Crowded House because of Split Enz's early image. He completely dismissed Enz for the rest of their career because of that look. It was like he couldn't forgive them or something. I say, it was brave for a New Zealand band to look like that and relocate to an Australia that was dominated by AC/DC. Split Enz opened for AC/DC in concert in 1975, and were booed off the stage. Luckily, a lot of Australians got to like them in time...

@@heathcornbeef You think they're that bad? I am not a super AC/DC fan. I can take them or leave them. They're just part of the ''classic rock'' wallpaper along with every other mainsteam band. However, I have a thin connection with AC/DC. I attended the same school as Angus Young (different decades), grew up in the same part of Sydney as the Young brothers and my grandmother was a friend of Bon Scott's back in the late 60's. Bon's wife, Irene Thornton, briefly mentions my grandmother in her book - not by name but by description. So, I do have a sense of pride that AC/DC made it. I like Split Enz a lot more than AC/DC, but I'm proud of AC/DC for what they've achieved. They're close to home.

They were my favourite Antipodean band (meaning, I put them above all other bands in both Australia and New Zealand). It was good to see them have international success but it would have been nice if they got as big as Blondie and The Cars. They had the songs. I believe Mental As Anything did well in Canada with ''Too Many Times'' in 1981, reaching # 34... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fsqcdKulqr_bink.html

I liked their 'Live It Up' when it was released in the late 80's 😀 I found out they were Kiwi only after I'd moved from Germany to NZ about 15 years later! Same goes for the Finn Brothers; I'd always had the impression Crowded House were an Australian band! But that's also how they'd been marketed in the German media. And I'd known the name 'Split Enz' forever, before I finally heard their actual songs; They were on the same record label as The Police, one of my all-time favourites, and their albums were being advertised on The Police's albums' inner sleeves. Along with XTC's, by whom I'd known only a couple of songs forever, too! Which I changed a couple of years ago, and they also were great! 😊👍

@@mightyV444 Cool story. I'm impressed that Split Enz albums were advertised inside the sleeve of Police albums. Mental As Anything (''Live It Up'' fame) were an Australian band. Crowded House are an *Australasian* band. Crowded House are both an Australian band and a New Zealand band. Neil Finn (New Zealander) formed Crowded House in Melbourne with Paul Hester (Aussie) and Nick Seymour (Aussie), and Craig Hooper (another Aussie, and ex-Reels member). However, I don't feel Australia should have complete claim over Crowded House, seeing as Tim Finn joined the band a few years later.. Crowded House are not completely a New Zealand act. Nick Seymour and Paul Hester are NOT New Zealanders. I think it's offensive when a New Zealand band gets promoted as an Aussie band, and as for Split Enz, that happened a lot in their early years. I saw footage of Dion Warick calling Split Enz an Aussie band when she hosted Solid Gold, and The Professor Of Rock also referred to Split Enz as an Aussie band. That is just ignorance. Your first impression is correct. Crowded House were two thirds Aussie, and were half-Aussie/half-Kiwi when Tim Finn joined in 1991.
@mightyV444
@mightyV444 Жыл бұрын
@@OnceWasRStrathfield - Yes, that's pretty much my own math, too: Two Australians versus only 1 New Zealander = an Australian band. To be fair, though: That 1 Kiwi was (and still is) their primary songwriter and thus probably has more say than the other two guys (which definitely also was the impression I was getting when reading the band's bio). He's Crowded House's Sting! 😄😉 'Australasian band' is a great compromise, though! 😁👍 And thank you for correcting me on Mental As Anything; I'd remembered it wrong 😅
@OnceWasRStrathfield
@OnceWasRStrathfield Жыл бұрын
@@mightyV444 I used to say that Crowded House are an Australian band running on New Zealand fuel. But I think it's much fairer to say that they are an Australasian band. In fact, Mental As Anything are also, technically-speaking, an Australasian band, because brothers, Reg and Pete, were born in New Zealand. The weird thing is, Australia claims anything successful from New Zealand. We still have a cultural cringe in Australia, which is why we do absurd things like demand unassuming Canadian couples react to our (often obscure) music. ha ha ha

I detect Canadian here, so you should ignore anything south of your border. Maybe focus on Kiwi and Aussie bands on principle. Hunters and Collectors, Midnight Oil, Cold Chisel, Missy Higgins, Powderfinger, Paul Kelly, The Angels, Hoodoo Gurus, Mutton Birds, INXS are good starts. BTW the song grows on you. Deconstruct it and you can hear excellent bass and very clever keyboards. "Message to My Girl" by this band will convert you completely and is their best work for mine.

A remarkably restrained video in costume terms, wow they wore some absolutely ridiculous outfits!.. Lets hope that stuff never comes back into fashion, it wasn't a good look. Not a band i ever got into, though i remember they were constantly on MTV, maybe that was why, they were impossible to escape for a long time.
