I converted my DIY split-flap display into a subscriber counter! The Python script runs on a Raspberry Pi to fetch data from the KZfaq API. It parses the results and sends the filtered strings to the flap modules for display.
In addition to the subscriber count, the script also fetches the channel name, total channel views, and statistics for the latest video (views, likes, comments). Channel statistics are fetched every hour, video statistics every 30 minutes, and the subscriber count every 2 minutes.
This entire project is open source. You can find the documentation and download links below.

A big thanks to Scott Bezek (^) for creating the DIY split-flap display project; this wouldn't have been possible without you.

I've been looking for this diy for years now, I'm so thankful I've found your guys' work! I'm a computer science, aerospace engineering student and I was an avionics electrical technician on aircraft for the Marines for the last 6 years. I can't wait to build this myself, these electromechanical flip displays mean so much to me. They embody so many aspects of all that I enjoy about aerospace, engineering, and computing. Well done!

Very nice Dave! The sync on the shot of all of them was super cool! (I was among serious royalty there 😅)

Thanks Brian! It was tricky to get everything aligned but the end result was definitely worth it.

How does it know which split-flap to display for each character? Is each character a unique key that relates to the amount of flaps each split-flap module should cycle to?

nvm read your excellent documentation. Scott really did a lot of heavy lifting to create a really nice foundation. Good job man, this is SICK!

Hi Dave, I'm setting up a woodworking shop and I'd love to make a counter like yours but running on Arduino for the "days without injuries" with a red mushroom reset button that when pressed sets it back to 0 and restarts counting, Do you have a starting point on which I can work?
@dave.madison
@dave.madison 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Tony! Start with the main split-flap project and the included firmware. It shouldn't be too difficult to modify and add a counter. Alternately, you could also use a second Arduino to count and prepare the string and then send it to the board running the display via serial.

How much does the cost work out to per flap module and the controller separately.
@dave.madison
@dave.madison 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Arif. It works out to about $45 per module, not including the Raspberry Pi.

How difficult would it be to modify your code to control mechanical 7-segment Vane displays?
@dave.madison
@dave.madison 10 ай бұрын
It shouldn't be too difficult. If you write the 7-segment driver using the same API as the split-flap project the Python code shouldn't need any modifications at all.

@@dave.madison Lovely! I might try my hand at recreating this project using eight of the Alfa-Zeta 1" Vane displays, I've always wanted to have a go at making something with those. Electromechanical displays are so much fun, thank you for making this project and this video!

Can you connect more than 8 displays?
@dave.madison
@dave.madison 2 жыл бұрын
Yes! The firmware for the Nano supports up to 12 modules, but other microcontrollers such as the ESP can support many more.
