This video covers why you need to split your Power BI Dataset & Report. This is one of the best practices that you should follow in your Power BI development. This is also called Shared Dataset or Golden Dataset which can be used for multiple reports.
I have covered below topics.
1. Why you need to split Power BI dataset & report
2. Benefits
3. How to split the dataset report - New Projects, Production files.

Thanks a lot! I had that exact same issue, and thanks to you, in a matter of 30' I have a single dataset and multiple reports showing from it. Thanks!

Great explanation of why you would want to separate data and report, and showing how to. Thank you!!

For me the main problem when we connect to the dataset is that we no longer have the table mode available in Power BI Desktop. Thank you for your explanation.

I find it's often the case where we'll have one "Master Report", in the case it would be the Sales Dashboard. Then multiple smaller specialist reports, eg "Sales by Product" in your example. Because of the difficulties associated with modifying and improving an existing report/dataset that is split across 2 pbix files, would you see any reason why we shouldn't have our "Master Report" as 1 unified pbix file and then any other specialist reports just connect to the master report dataset?

Hi Can we connect to two shared datasets from a same workspace or from different workspaces and create a reports. Please reply or make a video on this use case it helps a lot. Thank you.

It is possible from same or different workspaces. It will be a composite model where you need to convert the live connected model into direct query based and add another model.

Great video man! You got one more follower for this! This will be useful! Do you have some videos with power automate and extracting groups + members from admin portal?

Thank you so much!! Do you mean Active Directory groups and users?

@@HariBI Yeah, exactly, I managed somehow to export users but still not satisfied with solution. I would like to automate it with PowerAutomate as much as possible. I know PowerShell works also good (better).

Hi Hari, Thank you so much for this video. I have one below doubt related to live connection mode. Can you please clarify this. We have an option to create measure in "Report view". Suppose I have created a measure and then publish the report to power bi service. How this measure get linked to dataset or where I can find this measure in power bi service?
@HariBI

Measures which are created in report file then it will be there only on that report file. If you edit the report in service, you can see those measures. Those measures will not available in dataset. If you need to use those measures in another report then create those measures in dataset file instead of on report file

Hi Hari, Thanks for your video! I have 1 question on how to best modify this dataset afterwards, as the original report is deleted. Do you always save a .pbix file with the original report somewhere locally/online just to be able to open or modify this dataset? Or could you actually directly download the datamodel and modify from there?
@HariBI
@HariBI 8 ай бұрын
Yes you can save the pbix dataset in local and do further changes. You can still download the dataset from online if no incremental refresh. You can use external tools like tabular editor to change the model using XMLA

@@HariBI Thanks! I also just noticed the reports after rebinding face the limitation of not being downloadable online. Does this happen to you too? This means, we always have to save the original file somewhere for collaboration, and whenever we publish again from tableau desktop, we'll have to do the rebinding again

I figured out the not downloadable might be due to the fact that I moved the report from another workspace after all ^^
