Well, there are a few of those hives that are just temperamental about being on camera. They are anti-KZfaq. But the rest I believe it is exactly what you’re saying, some sort of wireless energy. Whatever it is, they need to get over it soon. We got a season to get moving on.

Well, the good news is, people are saying the 10’s and 11’s aren’t having the issue. One person even said they had the issue with their 8 and when they went to the 10, they had no issue. But the dirtrooster and yappy didn’t have any issues with this camera, so who knows.

Well Russell, that’s what my goal of this channel is. Just be sure to show it like it is. As far as requeening, they have to be pretty mean to be requeened. I hate losing time on a flow ‘re-making’ a colony that could be making honey. That’s kind of greedy of me I suppose😬😬. But honestly, they’re not as bad as the camera is making them out to be and once everyone is split down and queens are laying and nectar picks up, most all will be much calmer. The camera really makes it out worse than they are. I was discussing with Mr. Ed the other day regarding production versus management strategy. We all differentiate between strategies and one thing I notice is three beeks can make 150 gallons of honey. But strategy dictates how many hives it takes to do that. I try to do it with way less than the first guy and he/she tries to do it with way less than the next guy. And so on and so forth. So where I will do it with 30 production hives, another does it with 75. So I need to have every hive that’s able to get what I need. So I hate to requeen if I don’t have to. I eventually would like to setup some of my two framers and begin to make more mated queens, then I can have some on standby just for what you’re saying so that then those colonies don’t miss a beat. But at this time, I’ve only got time to make cells and that shuts the colony down for about 2 weeks before they get back going good again, and of course that’s based on a successful mating flight. So early in spring, it works out, but later on, I’ll lose production on that colony and I really can’t identify a mean one until things calm down. My builder colony that has been vicious was actually quite nice when I dropped a cell frame in yesterday and wasn’t terrible at all as I went thru and shook each frame to check for rouge cells.

I do now that I use queen cells. With walk away splits and them making their own, it was hot and mid. I’d say 60% of the new queens would make honey, but not much. Maybe a box. Thai way, they’re ready to go for the flow if they get mated.

That's what I think Anthony. I did just what you suggested and they leave it alone much more when it's off. But right now, even my Hero4 is attracting them and it is usually not that bad. I think it's a bit too with the weather having them hostile. Just not sure. April and end of this month should be better.....at least I hope so.

Wow, honored on that comment Tommy and thanks so much and thanks for your service as well!! It’s not about time, it’s about serving and being a servant. That really stinks about the 8 frame deal and sounds like someone with some pull that doesn’t like bees, or as stated in the other comment by AmericanBee, knows nothing about them, has their hand in that pot. I hope you can work it out and really, I guess you could work on a system that defines ‘a lot’ how you need it to be defined. In the meantime, might would be a good time to put together some educational power points and some presentations at local events and festivals that explain the honey bee and beekeepers. A table with all kinds of info and posters and you explaining the benefits of the honeybees. A lead up to some town board meetings that could rally support for introducing bees back into the area. Maybe even moving folks toward planting friendly flora and vegetation in their flower beds and landscapes that would reduce the degree of the bee desert. There are some organizations that have promotional literature as well. I think the BeeInformed Partnership provides some. They’re out there though.

Hopefully soon for you guys. A bit of a set back with the cold and rain, but they’re definitely growing fast now.

Well Tommy, I’m glad you could glean from the video. Just me being me and doing what I do. I can be inconsistent at times, but I’m a small operator and I do a lot of case by case stuff. As far as the camera, I’ve cleaned it a few times and it doesn’t seem to help. Next thing is what a lot of viewers have suggested and that’s a wipe down of honey-b-gone.

Hey Mike I have a question I know it might be a little off topic. Mike when your grafting queens on what day can you take them out and put them in a incubator to finish hatching thank you Mike.

@@patrickbrewer2794 I learned from Dr. Harris to take them no earlier than day 10 of the age of the queen. Basically 6 days after the graft. I took them the last couple years at age 12 to 14(8 to 10 days after grafting) with no issues. If earlier than 10, he told us to be super careful due to the wing development of the queen. 10 days or at uncapped larval stage 48 hours) is safe from all I've seen. But based on my video releasing in a half hour, you may want to be careful with my advice...😁😁 But in my defense, what happened was a first in 4 years...

Yes they were. They are taking a few days to calm down, but it’s also been bad weather, so I’m hopping that’s what I’m seeing. The camera was at least 25 feet, yet once they found it, they hit it hard again.

Yea, a couple of the hives were like yours were that day. But like you said, always a bit rowdy this time of year. Plus the weather was just not good either. You’re right, we have to get busy good or bad weather if they’re in the trees for sure.

They were 10 days from egg, 6 days from graft. That's the earliest I pull them and I learned that from Dr. Jeff Harris from MSU in a queen rearing class. And simply put, that's the time frame for them to be more safe over too fragile. And he has said, they can definitely be pulled earlier, but that's when they're pretty safe for handling. Bob Binnie has had a discussion on 48 hour old cells, and that is when they are just coming out of larvae stage, so that's a whole different ball game. It's the point when they have just pupated and they are forming their wings which is the most critical and that is just around that 10 day mark. That's what I have been taught Roger. I had taken a water break and sat down for a bit with my veil flipped back off my head. Guess she was somewhere still crawling around on my jacket and climbed in there while it was flipped back. I saw her down there when I got back to working and just left her there since she was minding her own business.

That is my thought as well.

Ive had the same thing happen with my phone just in the top pocket of my jacket. The black/dark colored rubber case may also be their target…

I keep them in a small incubator. If I have a bunch, I give them to folks that can use them. I normally make more than I can use. But more to follow on the cells in a video releasing later today.

I have had great success in the pro nucs, but only for raising the NUC to strength and the queen filling 3 to 4 brood frames and then selling them for immediate installation into a 10 frame. They are not good for just raising NUCs in my opinion. They're made for transfer and sale and then transport. I also have to keep them shaded or put a board over them if they're in the direct sun. They're great for what they're made for, just not good for simply raising NUCs to keep in the yard. If I need to make a NUC I'm not selling, then they go in wood. I use these same as the Jester EZ NUCs. So I'm with you on raising NUCs for any amount of time, they do way better in wood and long term, won't do well in the plastic pro-nucs. I had one that didn't sell one year, so I immediately transferred into wood for the fall and into winter. Thanks for the question!!

Possibly. I just know Dr. Harris taught us to let 10 days be the absolute minimum for handling as they are very fragile up to that point. I've heard it from others as well about the 10 day. Between 48 hours and ten days are the days to leave them alone for sure.
