Lived in NL (Utrecht) briefly. Really miss the Dutch cycling infrastructure here in the UK. And the gezellig atmosphere.

As someone from the US, it's wild to learn of essentially an entirely different way of life in Netherlands purely unobtainable by what is essentially a human design choice.

As a :dutchie"i love how the red asphalt is also dessigned in a way to have minimal friction. For kidS cycling they also learn social inter Action en negotional tactics during bike rides. iT'S A SOCIAL THING ALSO. By the wat you GUYS drove alongside my house also. Great vid of an awesome little town... tHANK YOU GUYS By the way all bike trips under 4 km's are faster theN taking the car if you live in the city....nICE TO HEAR YOU ENJOYING THE GOOD LIFE HERE....

I was listening to the video without watching the route and halfway I checked my screen and i was like 'oh there's a cool route close to my house that looks like that'. Then I saw a building and I realized you're biking the route we take to Delft. Absolutely amazing route to take from Rijswijk (where we live). Loved the conversation! :)

Cool...I just bought Urban Traffic a couple of weeks ago. I didn't realize the authors were even Canadian (I'm in Ottawa). I am contemplating a very similar life choice that they made, so the Canadian perspective is valuable to me.

@George Liu regarding the advent of E-bikes, and I do have one of those too, what I see happening in both the UK and USA is not advantageous for a bicycle network. The, what is Speed Pedelec in the Netherlands, is limited to a 45kph. But those are limits with assist. Basically you still have to pedal up to that speed. However, a well trained cyclist, can reach speeds way over that number. That wouldn't mix with the 'normal' cycling. What I see happening in both the UK and USA is counterproductive if you want to build a coherent social cycling network. Speed Pedelecs in particular UK and USA can reach speeds WITHOUT physical effort. That will make it unsafe, cycling would suffer from those machines. Then there is the Velomobiel. Another of those contraptions which are on the cyclepaths at present but should be banned. These, particularly the 4 wheeler, are going to be a greater threat. Ah well, just my observation as a cyclist 😉

Legally, speed pedelecs ("speedbikes", classified as L1e-B in Europe) are motorcycles, thus not allowed on bike tracks (and require a license plate, insurance, and a motorcycle helmet). www.green-mopeds.com/electric-moped-motorcycle-and-road-legal-scooter-faqs-3-w.asp

@@vincentdelporte eh, no. The problems stems from just that, the speed pedelec is perfectly legal in Europe because they are electric assist vehicles. However, it is a problem when they are on a bike path. There is a reason why, what we call those 25kph monstrosities, Amsterdam has banned them from the bike paths, they simply don't work on a 1.80cm wide cyclepath. Today, the mopeds with a 49cc engine are banned from city streets where the max speed is 50kph. They mix with car traffic only. Normally when speeds go up even those are directed to some of the bike paths. Eindhoven is a prime example of this, the JF Kennedylaan outside the inner-ring road has a speed limit of 70kph, so they are legally obliged to to mix with bicycles. It simply doesn't work. The next thing you fail to understand, if a speed pedelec is limited to 45kph with assist there wouldn't be a problem if the width is sufficient. The problems only show up when they have no human input. How hard is it to understand?

In the EU, standard e-bikes: 250W, max speed 25 km/h L1e-A: 250-1,000W, max speed 25 km/h ; At this point, I only know of the Radwagon L1e-B ("speed bikes"): 1,000-4,000W, max speed 45 km/h. Ciao.

Paul C I guess you wouldn’t class cargo bikes as safe then seen as how you don’t like velomobiles. Too bad, they are still very fun and VERY ecologically and cleanly designed so to be honest as long as the riders have a brain and don’t act silly on a place where it seems to be high in density and populous it should be fine

@@maxnewts nope, I even have a quest. Just, I do not use it within city limits if I think it isn't safe at high speeds. What you you don't seem to understand is every cyclist has also has a brake. People tend to forget there is never enough space to give everyone everything they want. That is my gripe.

So do I! I know this is completely off topic from a really great video (thank you), but could you tell us the brand of coats you were wearing. Or, maybe there is a point ... You rode for 30 minutes at least, in elegant-looking, regular clothing. You could have stopped at a high-end restaurant at the end of the ride. A rare idea here in the States.

If you look at the streets, you can see infrastructure here that is still in many of the 'polder'. At some of these there should be better arrangements for said cargobikes and electric bicycles, if not just plain old bicycles, all over the land. That's why I often comment on people saying Netherlands is perfect for cycling, I reply: we're not done yet. We have much work to do.

E-bikes are limited in their speed supply. They help you upto 25km/h (really not far off from how fast I rode my bike "back in the day"), They can go faster, but then you have to put in the extra energy yourself. You end up easily going faster with a racebike. I am pretty limited now on how much energy I can use and let me tell you, E-bikes are heaven ;p
