I think I just realized that as a kid I never saw Spongebob as overly positive, I just thought he was normal, but I definitely knew Squidward was a misanthropic pessimist. Now that I'm older, I recognize the over-the-top optimism in Spongebob. It makes me wonder if kids are just naturally positive creatures and relate to Spongebob and it's not until we're older that we become more like Squidward lol thank you Spongebob (and Tom and Steve and everyone involved!) for the greatest show on Earth

What most people don't seem to recognize is that, while SpongeBob IS overoptimistic, Squidward is ALSO definitely a pessimist. They aren't mutually exclusive.

My21gems They work as perfect character foils Squidward and spongebob were designed to be this way to appeal to children and adults as the children grew Squidward is a pessimistic adult and spongebob is a over optimistic kid It’s perfect, even though this was lost in later seasons especially the recent episodes where things are now just nonsensical

The reason spongebob is so memeable is because it's a very visual show. Anyone who doesn't even know what episode the frame is from, or the context in the episode, can tell what the energy from the scene is just because of how it looks. Take any still frame and you can tell the energy of the moment
