Oh, that is just to annoy the viewers. The noise (a.k.a. "music" - heh, heh...) is usually chosen by that guy who worked at drop hammer heavy forge and never wore any hearing protection. I gues he's done that to prove you don't loose hearing - and he's right, he still can the difference between this kind of "music" and no music. See? (Or "hear, hear", as they say...)

Induction coils are used to preheat the pipe, though sometimes they use propane torches

I take it that this is used for offshore type applications ? I noticed the wall thickness is pretty heavy. I've done years and years of mainland pipeline work and its typically thinner than std wall thickness. Before they sandblasted it , I noticed an arrow drawn on the pipe which is typical for x-ray. Do they do both x-ray and a.u.t ? or do they a.u.t. guys use arrows as a reference zero also ? I think its pretty cool how they can turn pipelining into an assembly line .

What is the polyurethane coating for?

It is a tough and durable protective coating for the subsea pipeline. The pipe lengths are already coated with it (white coating). The IMPP is applied to the joint area after welding and NDT. The half shell is fixed to the bottom half of the joint as a temporary protection from the rollers as the fresh joint moves along the line. It is removed after curing.

Alex Finn To piss the welder off that has to repair that weld 20 - 30 years down the road. Don't need that poly. on it if it's going under water. A swrenk sleeve would be just fine.

Eddy currents, welding, end up with a crappy weld. Arc blow if you're in the mood for googling and a longer explanation but long story short it borks up welds.

the pipe joints are made one after another and the whole pipe is wrapped around a large diameter "spool" before being placed on a pipe-lay ship.

the whole polyurethane over the weld joint is a waste of time, and the fact they laid it over paint and not clean metal is pointless

actually, the polyurethane coating is an insulation for deep well rigs, if they used non insulated pipe, it would cause crazy temperature differences from inside and outside of the pipe, do some research, and that's not paint on the pipe, that's a glue.
