I've just recently bought a 2017 Sportage to replace a Seat Leon FR as our family car, as my missus wanted something taller and easier for getting kids in and out. I was dubious but I am surprised at how good a car it is and how much it actually comes with. It's a '2' and has pretty much all you need. Cruise control, lane assist, auto lights and wipers, android auto and apple car play, reversing cam and sensors and still has 4 years warranty. We looked at a Qashqai, but in my work I see a lot of them broken down so their reliability is questionable.

4 years later and I'm in a similar situation. Currently have a 3 door Leon FR 1.4 TSI and have a baby on the way and my other half wants something more upright and the Sportage is most likely what we'll get. I hope you would still recommend now.

Just bought the GTLine (no sunroof or JBL) 1 month and 2500 miles and I am really growing to like it. Not a sports hatch or or GT express but comfy enough, with enough poke and good for a bit of rough - trailing that I have to do. Quality seems good enough and space is OK (its not the Alhambra that I used to have) Its a very respectable car at a great price point. I hope that the longevity is good

Another excellent video James, both the Mrs and I fancy one of these to replace our ageing cars - looking forward to seeing what it's like. Cabin space is a priority for me too so hope something like this fits the bill. Also, I had a Renault Kadjar for a couple of days last summer while my VW Jetta had some emergency repairs and I really liked that too and thought it drove pretty well.

The kia sportage gt line is a good bit of kit, plenty of 2017 low milers for £14/£15k, leather, sat nav, heated seats, pan roof, nice alloys etc

Didn't like the series 1 & 2 but loved it when the 3 & 4 were released. I advised my neighbour to replace his Tiguan with one when the time came and he's genuinely surprised and impressed with his series 3 and at his age now won't be parting with it. It's one of the very few that I would buy new as I don't normally advise new to the losses but I'd keep this long enough where that issue wouldn't matter.

My OH is considering one of these, we have tested a ‘4’ spec and were impressed with the relative refinement and features. She fancies the look of the GTLineS though. I will mention the ride comments to her, may push in direction of the ‘4’ instead.

Bought my wife one of these and it's perfect. Plenty of room, doesn't go all that fast but safe if she has a prang and the interior isn't exactly premium so you don't feel bad when the kids annihilate it. Would recommend!

MATT KH .... I had a 2018 hyundai i30.... in the 12 months I owned it it spent approximately 3 months in the garage... various different issues... hyundai actually got funny about honouring the warranty too. Luckily consumer law was on my side at a full refund was finally given. I found that locally dealer service centre knowledge/ expertise was limited/ restricted and that everything went back to Korea for investigation of the data.

We owned a 2nd generation Sportage kx4 and it was a brilliant family car plus it looked good in comparison to the other models available. Regarding the AWD it was a selection switch in the car and was mostly used in 2wd but the wife felt safer switching on the AWD in poring rain on the back roads plus it was actually decent on the grassy fields up my mums farm road. Would have another but running an estate and a VW Caravelle at the moment, brilliant for 3 kids and both dogs plus all the shopping.

I have Kia's SUV middle-child, the Sorrento (a 2019 model), and absolutely love it. No complaints yet, and it's everything I want it to be. A great vehicle for less money and with a great warranty - not a bad combination. Now, only if it only held its resale value....

I used to have sporty hatches, gt's, ect ect.. But once you get to an age in life and a car becomes more a tool than a plaything your priorities change. As living in London is becoming more and more like a potholed speed humped car park is decided to go down the medium SUV route for comfort, bit of interior luxury and economy. So I bought a new Peugeot 3008 gt line 1.6 petrol and love it. Its perfect around town and bad roads, fully loaded and stress free. It's a market that's being used by people who want a comfortable 'luxury hatchback'..

Just bought one of these, got a 68 plate sportage isg2 1.6gdi petrol in infra red and must say its a beautiful car to drive, loads of room, comfy an quick enough for normal driving, traded in my mustang ecoboost for one of these coz kids getting to big for mustang back seats. Suits my needs perfectly and good for camping and my mountain bike in back no problem too, really great car and economical too, i get about 40mpg in city driving and 50mpg plus on country and main roads so well happy, nice smooth 6 speed manual gear box an outside finish is really good quality and ok inside too, great family suv, kia have nailed it with this one 👌👌😍👍

Had mine for three years now. Zero problems. It is a dull car but it takes me where I am going without making a fuss. I am thinking about getting a better stereo, though.

I’m 6’4”, take around 1-3 passengers plus luggage regularly, and have lots of long/bulky photography equipment, yet I manage just fine in my 1 series convertible and have a hell of a lot more fun than any crossover driver. People are too quick to give up and get a fat-mobile without even trying other options and it’s sad because the manufacturers can’t justify making fun affordable cars anymore. I admire James for being someone also into cabrio/low/sporty cars and still seeing merit in cars like this, I would be so rude if I made this video XD

@@euclidredpill7277 I have lots of friends/family including myself with Kias. Haven't heard a complaint yet. Conversely I've known a few people with BMWs who had plenty to complain about. They have been Freed of the burden of having disposable income. You know how it goes a fool and his money are soon parted.

I know it’s a year after the last comment left but I thought I’d add one more; I’m considering the GTS AWD turbo diesel version. It just seems to have everything and more I would want including good safety stuff. I think other brands really should open their eyes and just see what tremendous value the Sportage is and start to add all the safety stuff as standard and not have to opt for expensive add on packages etc. Good for you Kia.

You should probably add some test of the AWD or 4 wheel drive systems on the vehicles you test that have them. Maybe just run them off the road through a pasture or something. My greatest concern for having one would be how it handles in rain and severe wet along with snow. Yeah you don't get that much snow where you are but I might take this car on a ski trip. Good show otherwise.

I think your tyre choice, summer, all weather, winter or off road will be the main determinant of off road / snow behaviour for most cars not specifically designed for or fitted with more advanced transmissions or traction systems designed for serious or heavy duty off roading. That said, any car marketed as a 4wd of off roader should be tested on and capable of decent progress across a muddy field or wet grass. Not all can manage very much.

Great review, as always. However, there is one important point which James is missing here - UK roads - especially in more remote rural areas - getting FLOODED. It happens A LOT in UK Winters - and even Summers nowadays. The extra GROUND CLEARANCE which you get with an SUV is THE important point here. An SUV will often get through when a 'normal' car just won't. Speaking for myself, my work often takes me to various locations in more remote country areas and for me, an SUV is the way forward. Literally - rather than having to back up and then drive miles out of your way...

The Tucson is very very similar, same chassis & engines. Younger drivers and families prefer Kia Sportage (i have one) whereas some older folks like the Tucson. Ford Kuga was a bit overpriced in comparison

first rule of thumb--don't rely on someone else's opinion. Drive and test all cars for yourself before you buy anything. I didn't this once with a car i let myself get obsessed with--watched all the videos and reviews and was sold it was the car for me... drove it and hated it. What a letdown. Drive them first.. only you know the car for you.

I was looking at buying one of these (in Hyundai dress)from Richmond Hyundai in Southampton. Sadly after being repeatedly lied to and let down by the sales men I had to give up. Will try the Viking dealer up the road and get the Kia instead!

Just avoid the older generation gdi motors. The build quality is however fantastic ... no squeaks rattles etc solid heavy. Proper transmission instead of cvt.

I owned the first generation Sportage from 1997-2001, one of the first in the US. That still was a RWD based vehicle which shifted into 4wd and it had a low range. It was not a great car. It leaned on corners, it was very slow, and rattled. Still, it was a good off-roady vehicle that is rare in the class today since all are crossovers. I wish the Suzuki Jimny was sold here.

It is a shame the Jimny isn't sold over there, its not at all practical unless its used as a 2 seater with a big boot (trunk) and they're almost impossible to get stuck unless you go ridiculous with them, fantastic cars. Sorry, I don't mean that to sound like I'm rubbing it in.

@@kaileysweeney4240 A friend used to own a Pajero 2.8Turbo Diesel (a Japanese import here in the UK) and it was a beast 😂 and could go anywhere. I think Mitsubishi have gone through what most car manufacturers do, high points and low points, Subaru were amazing here in the 90's and 2000's, now not so much.

Interesting 🧐 I am picking up a Kia Sportage c t line diesel mild hybrid 1.6 I was pleasantly surprised on the power and the quite ness of the car on the road . 21 plate infra red I’ve opted for, looking forward to getting the car next Friday, from Kia . They tried to sell me assist insurance? Which I don’t want ?then they tried to sell me c t line car matts ?lol all in all it was expensive but had only done 11234 miles I bought the service three year package which i think is worth it on a car like this .it comes with 2 years r a c breakdown cover , and £500 to your m o t . The car is 11 months old so no m o t yet the tax bracket is reasonable on a car like this but insurance is not bad .

Bought a GT line one a month ago to replace my nismo juke.Have to say I love the Sportage.Power delivery is smoother then the juke and alot better ride.I really don't understand jays comments about ride.I think it's perfect.Build quality is also decent .Overall the Sportage deserves the respect.Only thing i hate is the passe get seat dosent go up or down😟I bought the petrol one and find 5th and 6th gear very long perfect for motorway.MPG on A roads about 36mpg not tried motorway yet.Teying to buy one second hand is very hard especially in GT line trim or GT line s trim.Pleased with mine in everyway.

Got a 1.6 tgdi 174bhp awd leather interior sat nav heated seat etc etc etc what's no to like and they are reliable as a wood burner it's a no brainer really the only downside is the fuel economy could and really should be better for a modern car.

My conclusion to Kia deciding to put the indicators at the bottom out of site is because the majority of drivers don't use indicators anyway, so why put them where they're more noticeable?

My father in law (a career engineer) and his rich wife traded in their BMW X5 and replaced it with a top spec Sportage, and they love it. They don't miss the X5 at all. Perhaps him keeping his 3 series, and her keeping SLK convertible, also helped :-D

I've had a Kia Pro Ceed for 7 years. I really wanted a Sportage but, being on the large side, I was disappointed to find that getting in and out wasn't really that easy. Plus I felt a little squashed up once inside. It felt like a much smaller car.

Currently drive a 2 litre naturally aspirated 2019 Sportage with standard suspension and 6 speed torque converter automatic. It rides and handles very well and has quite direct steering. Ergonomically well laid out cabin with great seat comfort too. Not what I was expecting at all. However, with the engine/gearbox combo it has, it is so gutless and slow, as well as very thirsty. The 1.6 turbo/DCT would be a way better drivetrain

I have a Stinger GT and run a small fleet of Ceratos. Superb cars, all of them, for their intended purpose. And here in Oz, the 7 year unlimited mileage warranty is win.

Have had one for three years now. So impressed with the vehicle and Kia's reliability and value for money I went out and bought my wife a Stinger GT for her birthday. It's six month on now and she still walks through the door with a big smile on her face. We often fight over whose turn it is to drive.

Duel clutch? hell no. cvts? (konas, Nissans) hell no! I have the old 6 speed diesel Sportage no issues. Test drove the new 8 speed didn't like. Hunted down & up gears Hwy speed slight incline.

Caravaners car, older people have to have one cause their friends have one, perfect school run car for families who can’t afford an XC90 or Range Rover but still want to be a part of that precious “suv” group in the playground, Warranty attracts people etc etc...

KIA why do people buy them . more for the $$ . but nothing wears out /breaks .everything works for over 100,000 miles ..simple change oil , add gas . a few tires .throw in a battery. or two and your good ..
