Tbh with how it all went down, PG’s demands were relatively understandable. Philly defo had the max on the table for him during all of this once free agency started, and I believe he wanted to stay a Clipper but also wanted some control of his career. The Clippers have heavily under performed and there’s a genuine possibility they split everything up in the next 3/4 years and players lose their opportunity to dictate their landing spots. On top of that, the blatant disrespect in January probably nailed it there and then.

Did Kawhi get a little over $150M? In any event, I can see why after months he wouldn't want the deal without the no-trade clause. If they say they want you there and you want to be there, why not add the no-trade clause so that he feels comfortable after it took months to get to that number. That would make one feel leery at that point. And as he said, if they decided to trade him during that time, he could be somewhere getting paid less than what he could have gotten and not in LA where he wanted to be. Hence, why he would accept that deal.

This what happened. Clippers offered 2/$30 mil as incentive for george to play as many games and they would renegotiate based on if he coould play games healthy. He did and they gave kawhi deal of 3 years not 4. Paul wanted 4, so agreed based on nonsensical no trade clause, thinking he could say ok take away no trade clause but give me 4 years. Clippers gave kawhi 3 not 4 on purpose so were against 4th year to george as well. George wanted 4th year..so he left..thats all that happened.

I can understand not wanting to pay that much for a group who will be at the end of the 30s when the deals end but it sort seems like the Clippers went into this not understanding that everyone, including PG, would know every detail of Kawhi'd deal. Even if it wasn't public they could have been talking privately.

idk if your leaving stuff out on purpose or not, but the Clippers initially declined that deal mid-season and he obviously felt disrespected. He only wanted the clause because he felt that the Clippers were going to swindle him. Why would they come back with the Kawhi offer (which they originally refused) all of a sudden now? W/o that clause, PG ends up being traded and loses out on his money while the Clippers gain back some assets. I don't blame him at all

No-trade clause is a poison-pill for the front office, especially given the Beal scenario. No one in their right mind would hand those out anymore, especially for a 35 y.o. who have already reached his max and likely on the decline. I understand that players gots to get theirs, but at the end of the day the team is looking out for the team, not to cater for a couple of players exclusively.

It sounds like PG grew doubt from them saying no at first for so long just to turn around and say yes, so he probably looked at it as if I'm signing three years, I wanna be here for the three years, but if you wanna trade me down the line, at least I got my four years that I would have signed anyways.
@Dzogrim
@Dzogrim 11 күн бұрын
Its very simple: 1) Paul George is not on the level of Kawhi, never has been 2) Paul George played last time in playoffs in 2021, beside 2024, so he is basically same injury prone like Kawhi. 3) You literally need to pay more to 2 time NBA champ and FMVP, not the historical choker, who George clearly is. 4) Maybe 35 a year is ok deal for the level of PG game atm, cause Harden was better player and he got 70/2 contract.

PG did great for himself. He gets $216 million for 4 years, Embiid, and Maxey as teammates and a better chance to win a championship. Good for him. I think part of his reasoning changing was just reflecting back on the season and the offers he’d been given. The Clippers notoriously signed Blake to the max and hung his jersey in the rafters just to trade him less than a year later. PG probably views himself as being in a similar situation. The org clearly favored Kawhi based on the negotiations so it was likely that George would get a lot of blame if the team continued underperforming and he’d be the one sent out the door to siberia or wherever he doesnt want to play for real. So he decided to do what was best for himself and go to the Sixers where it might not be a city he knows but the team is built to win and he gets all his money.

It certainly does not feel like Paul George really WANTS to be in Philly. He's not making any secret about having wanted to stay in LA, and his second choice was to play with Steph in Golden State. He's clearly only in Philly because they were basically the only team that could pay him, which makes me wonder about good of a fit it'll truly end up being. Kind of reminds me of Al Horford signing with the Sixers, but leaving his heart in Boston.

The Clippers had valid reasons for not re-signing PG, but they are flaming hypocrites. They understandably didn't wanna give max money to an aging, injury-prone star... but that's exactly what they did with Kawhi. Speaking of Kawhi, I think that he should get more blame than he's getting for the Kawhi-PG era failing. PG is not worth $50 million a year at this point in his career, especially not with his playoff struggles, but it's not like Kawhi is a much better option at this point. I think the Clippers extended him based on what their team COULD be WHEN he is healthy, which is ALWAYS the problem: WHEN he's healthy. I feel like he's been getting passes over the last few years due to his stoic personality and his playoff success compared to PG, but his past successes have nothing to do with right now. PG may be gone now, but their issues are still there.

No trade wasn't going to happen, it was silly even to ask. It was a leverage play to try to get the 4th year and the Clippers were not going to do it either. So in the end it was either accepting the Kawhi deal or leaving, he chose to leave and it's not like Morey won't trade him either, but he got his 4th year.

I'm sure there is truth to what PG said but I don't think he's an entirely reliable narrator of events. Maybe he left because he wanted the full four year max. Moreover, Embiid is less of an injury risk than Kawhi and gives Paul a better chance at winning a championship.

To be honest, Kawhi destroyed the Clippers by asking for PG and then telling Toronto to also bid for PG. Clippers front office had SGA and 5 1st round picks. They were too desperate to become relevant and lost everything. They should have traded Podcast P when they realized that he was either not available in the postseason or choking.

in essence, the Sixers and Clippers traded Harden for George. The Clippers got Harden for less money than the Sixers would have had to pay him and for less years. The Clippers know they arent winning a championship if PG stayed or not, so why pay him all that money. they can use that money on other players to see what they can do.

Clippers didn’t want PG. They could have kept him and let Harden walk if they wanted to stay under the 2nd apron but they chose Harden because he was cheaper. Clippers need stars to sell tickets but are looking at a “rebrand” in the next couple years. They aren’t going to tank, instead they will be a fringe playoff team and have all their contracts expire at the same time and build a new team from scratch through free agency. It’s likely also the reason they turned down the Warriors. They didn’t want to be a 2nd apron team by matching salaries with the Warriors and probably didn’t feel like Kuminga was worth the contract he will likely be offered this next offseason.
