On July 12, 1996, the UFC 10 tournament took place, where, according to the traditional Olympic system, 8 fighters fought for victory. At the time, fans were mostly into the tournament style, as it was thought to add an element of stamina to the fighters. The event was broadcast live on pay-per-view in the United States and was later released on VHS. Then the legendary Bruce Buffer, who is still an indispensable UFC ring announcer, announced the fights in the octagon for the first time. But there is another fact that has become important for the history of the development of mixed martial arts. This is the debut at this tournament of the talented American wrestler Mark Coleman, who is considered the founder and pioneer of the "ground and pound" strategy. This style of ground control has been, is, and will be used by all successful mixed martial arts fighters.

I met Mark Coleman in a bar in the middle of Missouri. Dude was cool as fuck bought me a beer. Took pictures with me. Hugged me and treated me like a friend. What a good human being. I'll never forget that night. Marks a good man

Hello Anthony. I am suffering with constipation today. I had a horribly painful shit 5 minutes ago. the head of the turd was the same size as a baby's head. It felt like I was giving birth to a smelly baby. I had to use a plastic spoon to prize the turd out. As soon as the head cleared my sphincter the rest slipped out relatively easy but it was an ordeal. Do you live near me?

@@i_Hydra Yeah but you are forgetting they are much more into cardio, the good steroids and healthy eating than they were then. I think GSP is the guy that really upped what you had to do as a athlete to be on top. Back in these good ole days. They would go out for a beer the night before and later the night of the fights. They took it seriously, but they took it around 15 to 20,000 dollars seriously. Nowadays they are going for Real Bucks!!!

@@jeffreyscottsgames9308 they did have a rematch, in Pride. Coleman won by decision. Frye had the same problems. He couldn't stop Coleman's wrestling, and weight advantage. The fight ended with Coleman in mounted position.

@@ShinzoUchihaX Dan Severn and his protege Don Frye were the OG ground and pounders. They won plenty of matches that way. Coleman came along later when Frye was on his way out. I am pretty sure Coleman did what he did because of Dan Severn and Don Frye's success. I certainly think of Severn and Frye as way more famous. They were in the original UFC shows with no rules, no weight classes, no rounds... Coleman was great like many great MMA fighters before and after, but he does not stick out as different or special at all to me since he just did what Severn and Frye used to do but maybe a bit more mixed. EDIT: I was thinking of Dan Severn when talking about Frye, then my memory came back...

These were the days, MAN! I wanted to do this so badly. However, I was too small (155 @5'9"). I WOULD have gotten KILLED! Also, wanted to pursue a medical career. These guys were so awesome to do this dangerous sport for so little money, back then. We fans of today, really owe these guys a big ole , "Thank you!" Respect!

I remember being 19 or 20 and wanting to sign up at a college sport bar down the street from where I lived. I wasn't allowed to enter the tournament because I wasn't a black belt in anything. They wanted karate black belts or Kung Fu black sashes and Brazilian Jiujitsu which was new at the time and boxers who had some amateur fights or golden gloves or pro and I didn't have that. What I did have was training just to train and I followed the Bruce Lee way even before I knew who he was. I wanted to learn everything and anything. I would wrestle my cousin who went to state and handle him easily and I was 5'8" and 155 lbs. I had over 100 fights on the streets beating high school kids when I was 11 and by 16, I was fighting grown ups and laying them out so I knew how to fight and I didn't think I would win the tournament but I was looking to get notice because I was poor at the time and needed a job. I moved away from doing that when I had a work accident that kept me out of that and a 75th Ranger contract in the Army. Damn! Life sucks and then we die but I got saved by Jesus Christ and that's the most successful thing a person could do in life and I accomplished that. Good day!

Prayers up for Mark 😔❤️🙏🏽 Last night Mark was with his parents at a renovation rental property Hammer (Marks dog) woke him up and the house was on fire The enormity of the blaze had Mark pick his father up and run him out of the house, he returned to get his mother all of her hair burnt off When Mark went back in to get his dog he passed out in the house He was airlifted to the hospital and it doesn’t look good He's dog also unfortunately passed away 😔 such a sad suitation

Don Frye was indeed a good fighter. I liked his acting as well. Magnum P. I was a favourite growing up. He played the character so well. Dan Severn played the role of Magnum in its final season and he did the role justice as well.

Coleman was just too big and strong and a higher level wrestler and probably on Roids. Frye is one of the toughest son of a bitches to ever fight in the UFC Or Pride FC !! His fight with that 6'7 Giant Japanese guy was unbelievable! If you've never seen that fight Google Frye vs Takayama! It's the best mma fight..EVER !!

Coleman was a transition point for MMA. His debut tournament introduced gloves and more rules to the sport. His style ended the pure style combat systems. From that point on, fighters had to train in all disciplines. I didn’t like these changes, but I admit that Mark Coleman was one of the greatest heavyweights of all time in his prime. He was like a real life Goldberg.

Yes and Maurice Smith was the FIRST true world class striker and beat him after 3 months of counter grappling with Frank Shamrock. If Maurice could of shin Kicked Coleman as he got up Coleman would of gone to Hospital with a full shin kick to his face. Colemen kept putting a Hand on the floor which negated Thai Kicks to the head of a floored fighter. Frank and Maurice and Vitor Don Frye and Randy were the first real strikers. I mean Tank Abbot was a freak but was never gonna match the next level fighters ever.

If memory serves me right, I believe Frye suffered a leg injury before the fight (in the previous fight the same night) and opted to bow out, but they offered him an added extra few grand to fight in the finals against Colemen. Fyre was worried that his speed and mobility would be hampered, but still went for it. Frye was the toughest SOB in those early UFCs.

Mark didn't make the 1996 Olympic team. He lost in the semifinals of the Olympic trials to Danny Chaid, who in turn lost to Kurt Angle in the finals of the Olympic trials.

This fight was so painful to watch, Don Frye is my all time favorite fighter. I was lucky enough to lose at poker against him, hell of a guy. I was sad and a little angry over this one for a long time and I always said it took 100% of Mark to beat 20% of Frye, and then Pride happen. Damn it!!! I was born a diabetic and have a long history of low blood suger and I was SHOCKED when i found out Mark Coleman was fighting those long matches with low blood sugar. that is unfreaking belevable, he was fighting on all heart.

@@logangodofcandy It type 2 it can be a good thing under the right conditions but for Type 1 like i am it will build up a keto Acid and that is the death of a diabetic. low card doesn't work for type 1 even though carbs are long-acting sugars.

This will always be my favorite tournament style fighting. I miss it. Takes a true badass to win these. Ufc 1 one round no time limit fight untell someone wins. Thats gracie will akways be the legend cause he won the first couple of ufc. When they had no rules no weight class

Who cares? Almost everyone during these days was on the gas. There were no rules against it. People wanted to see juiced-up monsters going at it. It was even more satisfying if a juiced-up gorilla got subbed by someone like Royce Gracie, but by this time Royce was fighting over in Japan. If you think Coleman looked like a juicer, watch some of Mark Kerr's fights! He was "Coleman Plus".

@@Blazerghost I disagree. There were some guys back then you could give the benefit of the doubt: Randy Couture and Don Frye were big guys for the average human but next to people like Mark Coleman, Mark Kerr or Vitor Belfort (who clearly were juicing) they looked like two weight classes down

I was there, friend of mine Felix Mitchell fought as a alternate and he let go and be in his corner. I was just 18 or 19. I had a fighters badge and got to hang out in locker room and watch everyone warm up.

Ken shamrock was the first person to use ground and pound when he fought royce gracie in their 2nd fight. that was before coleman entered the UFC.

Nope. First one was judoka Remco Pardoel in UFC 2. He kod his oponent with elbows while having side control on the ground.

@@misterrr7nope that wasn't ground and pound by design. that was just knocking him out with elbows by luck. ground and pound is where you PLAN to methodically wear your opponent down with strikes over a period of time. Poerdel just happened to knock out weit with elbow strikes. HE DIDN'T PLAN IT BEFORE THE FIGHT. shamrock PLANNED it before he fought royce so that means he invented it. amen

@@peteramarillo8952 In fact you dont know if Pardoel planned or not. Its just your own speculation. Shamrock didnt pound anyone during that fight. Laying on Royce for 30 minutes is pounding for you? What Severn did in UFC 5 or Frye in UFC 8 or Ruas in UFC 7 was in fact ground and pound.

I remember watching Coleman being taken apart by a kick boxer named Maurice Smith. Chopped him down until he quit. Coleman never had stamina or any BJJ so we knew his time on top was limited.

I was referring to his mma career, what he came from and what he did. They fought twice. And Mark got leveled several times in his mma career himself, doesn’t mean he wasn’t great.

Got to meet Mark Coleman (he was attending a Ohio State dual meet after he graduated and I was working the concession stand for beer money lol). The most humble dude. Seemed surprised anyone recognized him even though he's a legend in Columbus.

I would hardly say Coleman "destroyed" Don Frye he won the fight but did no real damage and that was only because Frye had two long and very tuff opponents earlier in the night while Coleman had two short easy fights. If Frye was as rested as Coleman he would have won the fight.

Don Frye would probably have won this matchup had he had a chance to rest up after his previous fight. Coleman's techique was quite limited - take-down, ground and pound, occasionally some reasonable punches, but that was pretty much his entire repetoire. And he was at his peak here.
