Your info regarding Nikon support for repair was the most helpful thing I’ve heard from all the photo you tubers.
@BrettCarlsen3 жыл бұрын
It’s literally all I hear from my friends that shoot Nikon. Every one that switched either individually or their employer (news companies etc) is due to the service issues they have over and over. Hope that changes as it seems like something they should be able to remedy.
@reneefariasphoto403 жыл бұрын
@@BrettCarlsen I agree with you on the repairs. I had an issue last year and the turn time was one week from the arrival date. Meaning, within 7 days from the date they received it I got it back. I am a member of NPS. In the past, a 3 day turn time was normal. 7 days is not too bad for me because I have backups but honestly hope they get back to 3 days. Partially I think the reason is that they were forced to close the Los Angeles service center during covid and moved it to Ohio. That Ohio service center is slooooow as compared to the L.A. and NYC service centers. Both L.A. and NYC centers were hit hard by COVID. I hope they get their stuff together soon. I have backups as in 2 of nearly everything, so one unit down does not hurt me but I know it hurts others.
@BrettCarlsen3 жыл бұрын
I’ve heard some horror stories from friends at papers and freelancers where they are talking weeks if not months. Buddy sent a long lens out before football season and I think they had it almost two months. 3 days is great. I’m like you where I have backups of most things so even a week would be workable.

A unibody camera also has a LOT less places for water leakage than one with an add-on battery/vertical grip.

Agree with that. Historically the batteries can be bigger too which makes for easier charging/management

Love the overview. It’s really nice to hear what an actual working pro thinks is needed versus what the typical KZfaq crowd tells me I need. That said, I probably don’t really need much more than my iPhone. I do really love my R5, however, and really really want an R1 when it’s available. Really looking forward to the day when you get that R1 in your hands to fill us in on the details.

What a difference watching a video from a shooter rather than a YTer. I'm also a pro sports shooter (and a few other things) and yes, this is what I've been waiting for from Nikon. I haven't had to use NPS for some time so your comment about service came as a surprise but not a shock. The free NPS model was always going to struggle if people weren't buying as many products from Nikon. But year, full sized unibody mirrorless is what I've been waiting for. Their mirrorless bodies adapt easily to their old glass so that's not a problem Nikon has. I really don't care much about 20fps either since I usually single shot or double to get followups. The very high resolution might be nice since I am normally on a D800 with big glass so I can crop from the other side of the field. Anyway, nice review.

Hey Brett, Jose from Puerto Rico. Looks like Nikon is finally upping their game. Maybe with their recent cut-backs they'll improve on service; only time will tell. I'm pretty sure Canon will unleash the Kraken pretty soon, so wait for that. I agree with you about the body size, I don't believe mirrorless has to be small. I think Canon will stick to that too. They have to be hockey pucks to withstand the beating you pros submit the gear. I've seen how running backs get shoved to the sidelines on top of a photographer and the gear goes flying. I think this will be Nikons D3 moment.

No over heating , long lasting battery life , work in extreme weather condition , no writing speed issue & built like a tank should follow tradition of releasing a unibody . I can still see mirrorless cameras of any brands are not focusing on this issue first . Camera brand are crazy after high mega pixel even you are talking about having a high megapixel on the Z9 . I don't rally mind releasing the next pro dslr with all the latest tech in next Nikon D7 or so . One thing mirrorless struggle is they try to save weight and size which sucks mainly digging the menu in dslrs my main body all the control are in my fingure tips which people think is an out dated fashion .

Serious question though...what has NIKON done in the last...10-15 years that leads anyone to believe that this body will be able to go toe to toe with the 1DXII OR the A9??? Yes, I know those models are years and years old but that’s just how much “faith” I have in Nikon doing anything worth anything! I just want to see what Canon will bring to mirrorless flagship battle and seeing how GLORIOUS the 1DX3 is, the R1 could be down right sacrilegious! 😍 P.S. One of the very FEW things I miss about Instagram is your page...
@richardmurray18583 жыл бұрын
Well I would say 2007 there was the D3...blew the competition away at its release and was industrially renowned as a game changer of a camera. Then in 2012 the D4...which many consider to be one of the best pro DSLRs ever made. Just a couple of examples and you can go further with the dynamic range fo the D5 or the pure out and out best all rounder DSLR ever made the D850. Sure, we all understand that Nikon lost a lot of their sports and journalists pros by not getting the full frame D3 out sooner but honestly, im not quite sure you have understood your history :) By the way the A9 is in no way a Pro level camera. The bottlenecked SD cards are truly shocking and with the lack of glass I would pick a D3 or 1DX over that thing any day.
@BrettCarlsen3 жыл бұрын
I can agree with both of you. Nikon cameras are amazing, but you could make the case each gen they are keeping up at best in the past few cycles. Meaning while they may be great it’s rarely Nikon in the lead with innovation. Not to say they are bad but just not the leaders. I’m personally really excited to see both the Canon and Nikon pro mirrorless releases.

The first thing to say... there is no R1 for now... only vague rumors with a question mark about Canon's ability to source a stacked sensor. Based on past history about the time it took Canon to catch up with paradigm shifts in sensors, it may take them years. Agreed on Nikon service in the US. It's very different in Japan where I am based, it's top notch here. As far as Nikon S glass is concerned, it's plain amazing. That 24-70mm f2.8 S has been out for 1.5 years and is the best on the market.
@BrettCarlsen3 жыл бұрын
That’s awesome to hear about Nikon there. I’ve always been a fan of Nikon glass. Good to know it’s still going strong. RF canon glass is amazing too. Ef is good with latest versions being pretty impressive but RF is even better so far. Interesting on the sensors. I’m most concerned with it being a global shutter for photo and video reasons. Mainly photo if we’re going to use electronic shutter etc. but regardless always waiting to see the announcements like everyone else. Appreciate this input!
@bernardlanguillier79703 жыл бұрын
@@BrettCarlsen RF glass is indeed impressive. For sensors, I don't think we can expect global shutter yet, but with read out speed at the level of the a1 (1/240s), it's nearly as good as global shutter.

Are people in your Industry (in general) as hyped about mirrorless as you tubers / Instagramers are? Or are most Pros perfectly happy with their 1DX / D5 ?
@BrettCarlsen3 жыл бұрын
I think it’s mixed. As the mirrorless get better people seem more open to it. Currently majority are still on 1dx/d5 etc bodies. Many who switched to Sony did so because of discounts offered by Sony to switch. Virtually everyone actually that I know that switched did so because of that. That being said they are happy with the product as well. I think this next round of Sony/canon/Nikon mirrorless will be the first that really meet our needs in every way so it might be a bigger shift. But definitely none of us are as stoked as you tubers 😂

It's funny, it seems that the Canon R5 is using Contrast Detection Auto Focus (CDAF), instead of PDAF. As there is no contrast between the Brett face and the background (both have the same colors), but that white vertical bar is confusing to the camera the whole video to the R5 camera, because it has more contrast. Maybe Canon should explain what is going on in this video. There's something very suspicious here.

I didn’t adjust the focus settings. Don’t think it’s worth a deep dive lol. Need to just turn down the sensitivity and it usually remedies issues like these

Thank you for your overview. Like you, I want to see what the Canon R1 and Nikon Z9 have to offer. As a previous Z7 owner, I was not satisfied with low-light and Autofocus performance. Okay, we can use lighting. However, when we shoot weddings, we need a low-light capability. Then, the Z glass seemed to trail behind Canon's RF glass.
@BrettCarlsen3 жыл бұрын
I find I just want the “sweet spot” iso to be good. Like I’m often in the 3200-12,000 range in low light events. So as long as those are good I’m pretty happy but I agree. RF glass is incredible. Every lens I’ve used is just so sharp and nice. Heavy and expensive sure but worth the cost so far.

This has absolutely nothing to do with your post about the Z9, although it was an excellent summary... You should really consider hosting photography workshops, especially for sports/action photography. Years ago, our older daughter played club soccer, and we witnessed first-hand just how crazy parents can be. I like to think I’m not crazy, but I don’t earn one dollar from photography and I still owned more camera than I ever had a right to own. If you held a workshop for advanced amateurs or intermediate photographers, and the price wasn’t completely insane, I’f be there. Pretty sure others would also love to have that opportunity.
