In this third of three Football Psychology videos with Sports Psychologist Adrian McInman, you will learn about the most important aspects of psychological hardiness. He discusses the definition and major characteristics of hardiness (and equates it to the backbone of a fish), the importance of hardiness for footballers, the relationship between hardiness and the control of your emotions, the impact hardiness has on footballers away from football, and the relationship between hardiness and injury recovery (with a short discussion about Kevin De Bruyne’s injuries). He also discusses the importance of coaches being hardy, e.g., being more committed to their work. Vin also provides Adrian with a hypothetical scenario (a team of Under 15 players in their comfort zone and not competing for their positions) and asks how coaches and staff can influence the team so they become hardier and thus can compete at the international level. The video finishes with a discussion about maintaining high levels of hardiness with special emphasis on the acronym SAM - Support network, Advanced psychological skills, and Motivation to succeed.
