Tatsuya Naka (中 達也, Naka Tatsuya), born on May 29, 1964, in Tokyo, is a highly respected Japanese master of Shotokan karate. He is renowned for his technical prowess and has made significant contributions to the martial arts both as a practitioner and an instructor.
Here are some key highlights about him:
7th Dan Black Belt: Naka holds a 7th dan black belt from the Japan Karate Association (JKA), which is a testament to his expertise and skill level in Shotokan karate
Instructor at JKA: He serves as a full-time instructor at the JKA, where he imparts his knowledge to students and helps in the propagation of Shotokan karate globally
Major Tournament Wins: His competitive spirit is evident from his achievements, including a 1st place in kumite at the 35th JKA All Japan Karate Championship in 1992 and a 3rd place at the 4th Shoto World Cup Karate Championship Tournament in Tokyo, also in 1992
Film Appearances: Naka has also ventured into the film industry, starring in movies such as Kuro Obi, High Kick Girl!, and Karate Girl, which have helped popularize karate through cinema.
Tatsuya Naka’s teaching philosophy in karate is deeply rooted in the principles of Budo, which is the Japanese term for martial ways. His approach emphasizes not just the physical aspects of martial arts but also the spiritual and philosophical dimensions.

What some miss about this guy is that he has a very engaging and likable personality, and isnt stuck on himself like so many others before him have been! Easy to relate to, modest and skilled and also good with groups of people where his charm is not wasted, this guy is the front man for the modern JKA. Very much the wave of the future for the propagation of karate into the future!

Notice that his blocks are applied also as strikes. Blocks are often applied as "passive", meaning that they are defensive. His blocks are aggressive. They are attacks. Outstanding!

so many are wrong about uke, uke it self is not a block, its wrongly translated in the west. the word comes from ukemi which is translated into receive/receiving. u dont block but instead receive the attacks and use their force to fight back. Thats what he told me actually. Nvr block firmly instead receive it.

Karatè Do is ONLY Shotokan...No need to say Karatè Shotokan!! Sensei Funakoshi founded the Karatè Do ; he never labeled it as Shotokan!!! This was perfectly explained by Nakayama sensei in his last interview. OSS
