Here is the history of the origins of the whiteout in Winnipeg, its effect on the team and fans, and how the city has hung onto the tradition decades later.

This brought a tear to my eye . The last time my team won the League, I was homeless. They were literally all I had. Respect from Arsenal FC, England. I hope these fans get a Cup someday!

I got to see this presentation last night before the game. My son was in my arms smiling. In the end, it brought tears to my eyes. Call me a wussie. I Don't Care. I wish I was apart of the 80s and 90s Jets. But it wasn't in the plans. But what was in the plans, was for me to discover our beloved Jets on 21 December 2014. ...And I am damn proud to be apart of this team and apart of all you and the city of Winnipeg.

You don't EVER , EVER HAVE To apologize for feeling ANY kind of emotion. I live here. I LIVED through it. I FELT those same feelings. And in the fall of 1996 I felt a part of my soul die. It then felt like those same gods that I thought hated us and our city ..one of them was in the back chilling going 'Imma answer a Winnipeg prayer' and boom. Never again. The Jets are HOME and ALL of us are keeping it Forever together.

The old Jets franchise in the 90s was on the brink of financial meltdown. The owner tried everything, but the economics simply didn't work. Things have changed for the better.

Yup, the Jets are now a Cup contender while the Coyotes continue to be a joke, missing the playoffs for 6 consecutive seasons.

great video piece by SN. this brought flashbacks for sure...the winnipeg whiteout was a sight to see in the 80's and early 90's. and it's def a beautiful sight in 2018....as much as EDM won their cups i'm sure the winnipeg arena was not a pleasant situation to be involved in. hoping the jets can make a deep p-off run now and beyond. great fans. as much as i dislike bettman i'm glad the jets were brought back to winnipeg. it was a shame the team left in '95 to begin with. i'm pretty confident now that the city, fans, and owners can keep the jets going for the long term and be competitive with the demands of today's nhl economics. winnipeg, wishing you success , as long as it's not against my red wings LOL! one last thing, drop your current uniforms (they suck) and bring back either the originals or the variation uniforms used til '95.
@thegamebastard6 жыл бұрын
Steven A. There uniforms have grown on me and I'd even say their road jerseys are the best in the league
@carparthero6 жыл бұрын
jared that's good that you have taken a liking to the current uniforms. as i thought about it i kinda do like the nameplate font (futuristic) and the numbers are ok too. they're not the worst out there but def not the best outright or within WPG's history. i'm old school and really like the one's they used from '79-80 til 89-'90. curtiswalker.com/jets/uniforms.aspx i have an idea that would work for everyone, they could keep what they have and use that 79-89 jersey as an alternate, using it perhaps, like 20x per season. enjoy the p-off's, WPG is really looking good for a WCF appearance and more, regardless of their jersey look :D
@thegamebastard6 жыл бұрын
Steven A. I agree those are great jerseys and wearing the occasional throwback would be cool Btw I'm a fellow wings fan that likes to root for the jets so lets go red wings but right now GO JETS GO!
@carparthero6 жыл бұрын
great reply jared, can't disagree with what you wrote. red wings got a long way to get back, to be honest i picked NSH to win the series but being wrong about the jets is nothing to be ashamed of. these 2 teams really are evenly matched and it can still go either way. what's gonna break NSH's back is penalties taken and pekka in net. he really looked sketchy in gm 1and an extent gm 2. that gm 3 comeback is def gonna build WPG's confidence too. i think this is the best series and will probably be the best one aside from the SCF. whoever wins this , i believe can beat vegas. enjoy and cheers from southern ontario :D

Towel power as it was originally called was the brainchild the late Roger Neilson while coaching the Vancouver Canucks during a playoff game where the officiating was to say the least one sided, he placed a white towel on the end of a hockey stick and waved it in "surrender" ,there is a statue commemorating the event outside of Rogers Arena in Vancouver B.C.

I was born in 1996 in winnipeg the summer after the Jets left. My dad has 3 sons who he took to moose games and hoped to hope for the jets with. He is the most hardcore out of all of us but it is amazing to see our dream of winnipeg returning come to life not to mention the fact that we all get to watch the jets dominate in playoffs together. We are truly lucky. But yes, the original fans do exist.

So if the arena was jam packed and stuff, why did they move? Politics?
@smokesletsgo23746 жыл бұрын
Canadian dollar was around 62 cents, since revenues came in in Canadian dollars and salaries and expenses were paid in US dollars Canadian teams had slightly more than half the spending power of US teams. That and TV revenues and stuff like that. Now the dollar is more reasonable and Canadian teams get better TV deals
@FischerFan4 жыл бұрын
The facility was obsolete even before 1990. The old arena had nothing in the way of luxury boxes, so even if the Jets had sold out every game, the team still would not have been viable.
