Mr Marek, I like the podcast, recognizing that a - or negative goal difference (where goals against outweighs goals for) might be a starter as to look at the potential team's defense. If you mention a high negative goal difference, then we can probably assume that team is having troubles preventing goals from being scored. At that point, we can look at players on the ice when the puck repeatedly goes in their own net, besides goalies, how frequently does the same player(s) keep showing up on scorecards?? The more frequently, might lead to further questioning.

Why is the Selke suddenly about goal scoring...and why does Suzuki keep shutting Matthews down and yet gets no mention here? 🤔 i mean just the last game vs the Habs Suzuki went 7/8 on faceoffs vs Auston...

@@sojiroseta98 The leafs have won the last 5 games against the habs. Matthews had 10 points and a hat trick in those 5 games. Suzuki had 4 points in those 5 games. Out of those 5 games Matthews had a better faceoff percentage against Suzuki in 3 of them. What metrics are you using for "outplayed"? Because the stats say something very different. edit- In those 5 games Matthews was +5 and Suzuki was 0/even

@@workstrength Well how about this then. Two games ago down in Florida when you had a highly motivated Matthews going for his 70th, he was a -3 going head to head with Barkov who was a +3. And just to prove that was no fluke, Barkov have very similar stats against Mackinnon and Mcdavid

Matthews is in the top 30% of defensive forwards. But players who score a ton and are defensive. he is right there. Who cares. he'll win the rocket and not the selke .boo hoo

OMG! Let’s face it….T.O. Media should immediately vote to give Matthews the MVP, ROCKET RICHARD, HART AND NOW, the Selke…..he’s the greatest of the Leafs, true and merited, but cmon guys……i would wait to see after 8 years, he can carry his team past at least two rounds….

With all due respect, this is nonsense. Matthews is a great player but he and selke dont belong in the same sentance together. He picks almost as many cherries as Nylander

Nylander floats and is unengaged on defense. Matthews is getting the puck back and getting it out of the zone. Near league leaders in forwards for blocked shots and takeaways. Try and watch the games. Your take is nonsense. Matthews before he was drafted modeled his game after Toews and Kopitar. In other words a defensive minded center. Matthews is currently one of the league leaders in plus minus due to his two-way play. Nylander at one point a few weeks back was a minus player. Comparing the two is pure trash opinion. I can’t stand how Nylander plays defensively. He watches the puck go around the defensive zone. When asked about Matthews offensive play Jake Mccabe replied he should be considered for the Selke. Hockey writers agree as he got significant votes last season.

YOU clearly don't watch the Leaf games! Matthews is a +32, 75 blocked shots, 75 hits, aaaannnnd has previously led the league in take aways, and forwards for blocked shots....He's ABSOLUTELY a Selke candidate!

You are delusional if you think Mathews is even close to being the top defensive center in the league. I can't imagine anyone making the same declaration of Ovechkin 10 years ago just because he scored 60.

He's a plus 32, has 75 blocks, 75 hits, has led the league in blocked shots, and take aways.......he's an incredible defensive player
