This Team Missed the Playoffs Despite Having MLB’s Best Record (1981 MLB Strike)

Hey everyone!
It's playoff time! While I'll probably talk about some playoff performances at some point, I thought I'd talk about some MLB history. The 1981 strike was the first midseason strike in MLB history. This affected the seasonal trajectory of many teams, including the Cincinnati Reds, who had the leagues best record but missed out on the playoffs. I hope you enjoy the video!

All because the Cubs and Cardinals whined about having to play west coast teams. And yes, I'm still not used to the Astros being in the AL and Brewers in the NL...to the point to where I don't watch baseball that much anymore. I love Out of the Park Baseball and I can set things the right way in that.

The difference between 81 and 94 is that in 94 the season was cancelled, so while the expos had the best record, they never finished the season. In 81, they played by the special playoff format. The 81 reds had the best record, but were “ineligible” for the playoffs. The 94 expos never had a chance because there were no playoffs at all. One other point, if the reds qualified in 81and if in 94 they made a deal to complete the season, it is possible those teams could have lost in the playoffs.

It's weird. I'm an old Expos fan who started following them a couple of years after this so of course heard a lot about the 1981 season but I never knew they didn't even have the best record in the NL East in the one year they actually won the division. That kind of sucks for the Reds and Cardinals though maybe the Cardinals could have repeated and had a dynasty in the early 80s or the Reds could have kept their great team together a little longer if 1981 had been a normal season.

The reason is that they had a second place record for both halves. The Astros and Dodgers had a first place record and a fourth place record each. Astros and Dodgers had so poor of a record in their non first place half.

The 1981 season was fascinating for sure, but going by the best overall records isn't a good way to figure out who were the best teams that year. The 81 Dodgers already having qualified for the post-season finishing the first half in first place, had no motivation to win the second half. Because of this, the Dodgers basically coasted and used the 2nd half to get ready for the post-season (27-26). If they had something to play for in the 2nd half, the Dodgers probably would have had a better overall record. You can see the same trend with 2 of the other 3 first half division winners (Yankees 25-26 2nd half; Phillies 25-27 2nd half).

The strike of '72 for 2 weeks in the beginning of the season probably cost the Red Sox the AL east championship as many teams played up to 3 games LESS than other teams because the strike games were never made up. Red Sox lost by half a game that year playing 3 games less than Detroit who won.

Orioles winning 100 in '80 not making playoffs & Yankees winning 103 in '54 and still finishing 8 games back with no playoffs back then. Wild card era changed playoffs forever after the '94 strike. But that Giants team in '93 got the ball rolling for that wild card and new divisions starting in '95.

I was a boy when the strike happened. Even though we live on the Mexican side of the border with California, my dad scored tickets for the World Series, in the right field stands of Dodger Stadium with Reg-gie! Reg-gie! Reg-gie! Jackson within shouting distance. Oh boy, did he get it from the LA crowd. Let me tell you right now - the consensus was universal (outside of Cincinnati, of course) that the Dodgers were legitimate champions with no asterisk, in big part due to Fernando dazzling the entire baseball world with his pitching feats. Also, there's been three times in a full season when a team reached the playoffs hovering just above the .500 mark - the 1973 "Ya Gotta Believe" Mets (82-79), the 2005 Padres (82-80) and the 2006 Cardinals (83-78).

I recently read about this season and I'm convinced this is what the league currently needs. Slash the regular season to 152 games and divide it in two 76 game halves. The division winners of each half secure a playoff spot. Two wildcard spots would be available for the two teams with the best overall record at year end that did not clinch a division. 16 team expanded playoffs. This would give the league two different playoff pushes (June and September), which then makes the first half of the season relevant. No one gives a shit about game 68 of 162. Pace of game is not the issue. It's the season length. Time to save baseball.
@hmhm856

I know it's late but I remember it clearly. They didn't really have a plan for that until near the end of the season when they announced if it were to happen, that team would play the best combined halves team in their division. But really the 4 teams that won the first half and were in the playoffs automatically really didn't try hard to win the second half. I remember Bob Lemon of the Yankees resting players and pitchers more and bringing up a few rookies to see what they could do. That's how Dave Righetti as a rookie won a spot in the rotation as a rookie for the Yankees in the playoffs and WS.

No, I don't think it could be considered an asterisk this year. The big difference is, everyone is on a level playing field and everyone is playing the same amount of games. 1981 was a complete mess. The Reds and Cardinals should've made the playoffs somehow. But this year, yes, despite an expanded playoff...it's a different situation altogether.

@@rocknrallsoul94rockero4 Growing up in that 70's & 80's era, it sure was a different time for baseball. Free agency was only 6 years old, etc etc. But, no, people didn't claim the dodgers won a tarnished or M. mouse title. It was a great playoffs that year. Yanks & Dodgers were in their 3rd WS in 5 years & those Dodgers finally beat the Yanks. Valenzuela vs Righetti was a classic , then Guidry had a heartbreaking loss, Cey took a 99 mph fastball to the head, etc etc. Other than '94, this was the closest the Expos came to the WS. As a baseball historian, I can go on for hours but simple answer is no, wasn't tainted. EVERY team had a chance in the second half.
