I found it genuinely off-putting to the point I really didn’t want to watch the whole thing. The videography is great but the script sounds corny as hell to me, and is only made worse with that vocal style. I think this could honestly use better writing and narration. “Confused biologists and anthropologists alike…” is one of silliest descriptions of street skating I’ve ever heard and sounds so self-entitled. Like they’re some rare wonder of the world. They aren’t studying modern skateboarding because that has nothing to do with their field of expertise lmao. You would never find either of those professions to say street skating is confusing. How does anyone take this seriously from that line alone?!

despite not being a skater himself, my dad was a big supporter of my street skating. on the weekends growing up, he'd drive us around my hometown looking for spots everywhere (courthouses, schools, grocery stores, you name it). "lurking" for spots with my dad and him filming are some of my favorite memories! he sees spots when he's on vacation and send them to me. he has the skater's eye now!

Yeah, but that's bs for pros. Sheckler is 34 now & going bigger than even he was 20. Jaws is also in that realm of not slowing down, also 34 years old (check out his latest vid for Happy Medium just posted a few days ago)And there's others still shredding in mid/late 30's.

@@S_raB both jaws and sheckler have slowed down tremendously, especially jaws lol he's skating gaps literally 1 third of the size of his old videos in his latest happy medium part. NOTHING wrong with that btw, but we can't just pretend they haven't slowed down and scaled down their tricks over the years. Sheckler doesn't even film full parts anymore, he just showed up a few times a year to do something gnarly and then goes back to chilling

well done . been skating since 82 and never heard anyone speak on our thing like this - kudos. Once a skater develops the eye for spots it never goes away , it lasts forever - you'll be 72 tooting down the street with your walker and see a nice new marble ledge and think " dammmmn that's sick " and imagine all the tricks you would have done on it 50 years ago ;)

comparing skateparks to strict classrooms rather than playgrounds was spot on!! that's exactly why we skate in the streets. there's no room for creativity at skateparks. street spots are ephemeral. they're random. they're exciting. they could be there one day & gone the next, or they could last 30 years and end up being demolished to make way for newer buildings and plazas. you could plan a trick at a specific spot for 5 years, practice it relentlessly, then when you go to try it you find the spot has knobs on it or it's just straight up been removed entirely.

Alongside ledges, rails, banks and so on I’d add flat. Sometimes perfect flat can be a spot, especially for freestylers. Skateboarding is having a dialogue with a space, treating it not only functionally, but really playing with it, commenting, describing, defining, it creates a language. Skateboarders accepted the fact that architecture is nature and want to use the space, it’s for everybody, it’s common.

Phenomenal piece. I never thought someone would be able to truly explain the value, ethos and intricacies of street skating. You’ve done the world a service. As an aging street skater who now works in skateparks, I’d love to see your lens on the evolution of skateparks (and why we need them in the first place). Thankfully these days skateparks are being designed by and with skaters, with the goal of creating a legal, accessible and proper skate space that inspires creativity in the long run. A lot of people (59M) Americans don’t have a legally accessible or good place to skate, and exploring the streets (while pure, amazing and a right of passage) might feel out of reach, especially for beginners or folks seen/feeling as non-traditional skaters. But all skaters should certainly explore the natural, even if they get kicked out. (Within reason, though elevated risk for some). Your ability to discern important bits and dissect the value of these features and spaces is a gift, and I think we all appreciate you putting your heart and expertise into this piece! Thanks for doing what you do.

This approach -one that mimics a nature documentary. Is GENIUS! It's such an effective way to convey. Not just to skaters in a sarcastic manner but convey to non skaters & really show them the way of viewing the world and how one can interact, connect, and express through out it. In all it's many stages and forms. You start to see beauty and creativity even in the most obscure things. My brain can't ever not see the world in this manner. Once you embrace it and live it for many years it becomes engrained into you.

I’m a Bmx rider, street riding is just a whole different experience than park or or trails whatever. The act of hopping on your ride with the homies and scouring a city or traveling to or THROUGH another one, and finding new spots is euphoric within itself before even putting pegs onto anything. The brain asking for creativity with testing the skills that you have practiced for months or years to put together a trick or like that you want. Then the best part, if you get bored, you pick up and push to the next one. I absolutely love it and it’s my favorite feeling in the world.

Damn this is done in such a fun way! Love all the footage, the wobbly background behind text slides to keep them from slowing the tempo, the Portal like flat microphone voice. And the low key stabs and lingo that take it form a modernized version of a dry 80-90s VHS teaching tape to a video that was made by people who actually love skating

When I first got a car, whenever I had free time and wasn’t with my friends, I was driving around my area finding spots. Everything is kind of spread out where I lived, but I could still give a tour that would keep you in spots for a few weeks. Crusty to clean, packed to lean.

4:50 180 nose grinded that hubba when I was a kid. It was the one on the opposite side tho. We used to skate the majority of these spots in this video. Every Saturday and Sunday we’d go downtown. 2:38 was such a sick spot but it was further up north so we didn’t go there often since we were too young to drive. It’s right down the street from Wilson skatepark and definitely worth a stop if you’re in the area

I used to go skate that magnet school on weekends. So much to do. The parking garage had excellently smooth yellow parking curbs and short manny pads.

@@andycarey8234 they also had a barrier type red rail that you could place on the grass off to the side of those ledges, the very top level of those steps would be the runway, you’d Ollie off the edge, grind the rail over the grass and land on the sidewalk about 6-7ft past the grass. You couldn’t see that area when they showed the spot in this video tho. For such a dope spot I wish you’d see more footage there. Also there are so many cool wavy ledge spots around the city, I’d love to see some guys that are really good go have a session on them. I bet they could come up with sole dope grinds/slides. One thing I wish was around when we were kids was those ledges on Division that are shaped like stars ⭐️. I’ve seen some footage here and there of people skating them, galling over the top of the star and landing in a grind on the opposite side.

As an anthropologist and skater myself, I loved this video. The audiovisual part is tight and clean. I did not like the explicative, sort of scientific tone of the narrator, but I find this a super compelling way of communicating thoughts and findings about skate practices and communities. Keep it up! There's a lot to be said. I'm amazed about the comparison you make between skateparks and street spots, and the thesis that there's an explorative essence to skateboarding, in which skaters inhabit architecture and planning of the city in different and inventive ways. I also like how you mention how hard is to understand from a logical point of view. Adding to that, I also believe that the active presence of elements like cameras and phones, as well of a filmmaking culture, motivate skaters to search for interesting spots and rediscover, reinvent the city, record it and arrange it in a way they can feel represented, present, expressed.

skateboarding is exactly this. this video expresses how i feel as a skater perfectly. after seeing the world in a skaters eyes there’s no going back. it’s a breathe of fresh air; seeing the streets and our environments in a way no one else does. it’s something truly only a skateboarder will understand. i will show this video to everyone i know so they can also understand how it is we see things. we don’t want to destroy anything, we’re just trying to express ourselves. thank you for making this video and putting it in words the common man can understand :)

I think what got me the most was the last few lines associating skateboarding with art. The need to push beyond the box to express one’s innovation and ability to “solve” problems. In all my years of skating and art it’s always what interest me. The ability to solve problems is to me one of the greatest skills for a skater. Thank you for making this video, I really enjoyed it.

As an architect and a skateboarder too, I'm finding this edit so interesting. That's funny but I did quite the same work about skateboarding and Architecture at school where I showed the relationship between these two domains and how they influence each other. I talked about the sound, the materials texture, the art, the traffic and the way people perceive skateboard(ers/ing) in public spaces.
