At one time I was looking at a job that was near North Pole Alaska, (actual city, check maps) Due to permafrost and long cold winters there my idea was to lay down bed liner(polyurea) thin, just a barrier. 3 inches of foam. Place a monolithic concrete floor that would also be a the foundation for a steel arch building. Foam brought up the side of the slab and over the building at 4 inches on sides and 5 at the top making a complete foam envelope that would be the warmest building around.

Spray Jones, I was maint manager at a WH with about 15 buildings and two were just like what you just showed here. They did not prime the galvanized metal before spraying. FF to when i was there and they had major condensation dripping problems because huge plywood size sheets of that foam were just separated and actually peeling more off under the hanging of it. Closed cell. Sorry dont have pics anymore.

Thanks for the informative video. Doing electrical on my 40x80 and insulation is next. Glad you mentioned the prime on galvalume, I did not know that. Due to the fact these types of bldgs. are fastened together with thousands of bolts that have a neoprene washer, would the closed cell foam form a secondary layer of protection from water intrusion innthe event a washer were to fail over time? My concern would be water leaking in behind the foam, if that’s possible. Thanks in advance.

The closed cell foam, properly adhered, will stop water intrusion. The BUT in this is that it is interior applied and not exterior. So dealing with water AS it is coming in is far less effective than exterior. So it can still have short comings based on where you can and cannot get the product to be.

So what happens to spray foam at the end of the buildings life span? How does it affect recycling of the metal, what is released into the atmosphere, all questions people should be asking. Thanks for this very useful information.

diesel and kerosene heating with space heaters will soak all the cold bits with condensation 5 times more water than fuel is the result of burning.

Is spray foam able to adhere to Tyvek well? As well as on the ceiling? I plan on a 2" spray on both ceiling and walls (live in northern Michigan). Thanks much for the video's - good information!

You mentioned any support structures they are gonna add, you’ll need to get in behind it. So if I were to drill into a metal piece of channel that was covered, that is appropriate? Also with the main I-beams in a metal building, are they ok not to cover the inside face of them, or will that cause potential frosting? Your videos are awesome btw!

You can. Drilling holes can be your only solution many times. It is also hit and miss as to where and how much the foam will do when you can't see it.

Do you think it's safe to include a waiver notice in you proposal stating "by code an intumescent coating may be required" when the customer wants to do the overcoat themselves, and will this limit you liability?

How clean is clean for the foam to stick?? I have a newly erected metal building and the wall and roof purlins have light rust the entire length the interior bends. This area of the purlin will need to be foamed, but seems like a lot of work to remove all the rust. Interior of metal wall panels also have light layer of dust. What are your thoughts and thank you for these informative videos.

Tough call with out seeing it. If you can paint it, foam will work too. That is a rule we use...

I have a 30×32 q hut with 7ft sidewalls that arch to 14ft. Can you estimate as to how much it would cost to insulate it

The Quikplane my boss handed me 20 years ago still gets used every day. Replace the blade as needed, get the air motor rebuilt if needed, and work that thing into the ground.

I want to build a quonset hut in southern California. The question is can you say rockwool the arches first then spray close cell over that to fill out the cavity flush or would some try of rigido foam be better.

I lost a job on brand new galvanized Quonset over 2000$ wich I quoted more for the etch primer ... on a 24k job he went with the quote without Priming ...🤦‍♂️

Yes, that unfortunately is common. It stings but someone that stupid is not worth working for. There will come back to hurt you. If they will not listen on basics, imagine advanced issues.

For a retrofit, wouldn’t it be easier to put the foam on the outside of the building and cover it with a UV protecting paint? Extra layer of waterproofing, no thermal bridges, I’ve never seen it use that way, but it seems like it could work.

Great question. No. Exterior is weather dependent for application worse than inside, bigger lifts needed to reach, more expensive Top-coating, and will need maintenance over lifetime due to UV. Go interior if you have a choice.

ive heard of covering the outside of quansett hutts with lightweight concrete, can foam be used first then the concrete?

My grandfather put foam on the outside of his house. Same type arch as used in this video. Had to repaint it for UV every 10 years or so. Worked well in west Texas desert heat.

I am spray foam insulating a Quonset building, can I just use Krud Kutter metal clean and etch instead of etching primer?

I'm remodeling a camper to live in full time .. I'm gonna sprayfoam it from the outside when I remove the siding and put in all new electric .. Could I cover it when it's done with a tyvek for the winter ? Or should I cover it with something else ? I'm not gonna be able to afford the siding until next year

Wait until you have the money. Tyvek will rip in the wind before winter is over. Need something hardy to deal with wind and low sun for months on end.

What if I leave the siding and stud over the siding and sprayfoam the outside and inside of the camper .. Would it hurt leaving the aluminum siding in between the sprayfoam ??

Ive read about popping noises when the metal expands in the sun, will this always happen and does it cause delamination?
