I'm spraying my Fall Sweet Corn with an "Organics approved" Safer Bacillus Thuringiensis (BT) to make sure I don't have an earworm problem. Corn can be absolutely devastated by earworms. When I plant spring corn, the earworm problem is very bad. Last year, I tried fall corn (actually, it's planted in July, but harvested in fall). There was very little damage from earworms even though I didn't use any kind of insecticide. That leads me to believe that the earworm moth (or however they get there) doesn't like the hot summers that Texas has to offer.
So, I've got a lot of sweet corn planted. But, I want to make sure there is no damage from earworms. So I'm spraying it with "Safer". Safer is basically BT, and it's supposed to be very good at earworm and caterpillar prevention.

Iv'e used Safer 2 years now. Some say to spray the tassels and the silks. Concentrate on the silks when they first come on and spray 5 days later. Do this until the corn is ready. It works great.

I was wondering how that deep wood chip mulch you put down how it turned out, thx for the update. Are you planning on using wood chips in any other projects. Now that the Black berries are gone might be a good time for more wood chips?

@@jasonclayton936 Very little helps. I lost squash plants too soon from borers. I sprayed with the new Sevin, but it was too late.

It's Stowells Evergreen Sweet corn. You're about 60 miles NW of me :)

I do like G90. I don't think this will be nearly as sweet as G90... But, it's an heirloom so I can save seed if I want to.

Does that spray bother the bees?

I don't know about ALL Safer sprays (they have several types) but this "Caterpillar" spray says it's safe for bees. I think all of the Safer products are safe for bees.... but not sure.

Someone told me that this product would kill grasshoppers but I don't see that on the label. Do you know?

I don't think do. But Safer may make a product for hoppers...

As far as I know BT works on any caterpillar but I don't think it works on beetles or grasshoppers. Just a reminder, Round-up was completely safe untill it wasn't.
