Pottery tutorial on making, using and attaching sprig molds. I demonstrate how to make your own molds from found or sculpted objects. How and when to attach them to create unique embellished surfaces and handles. Music provided by www.bensound.com
Materials:
Clay- my studio clay is based on Val Cushings ^10 stoneware
Laguna 16 porcelain
Dolan 220s Clay Knife
Rolling Pin
Serrated Rib
Bowl of slip
Sprig molds
Found or sculpted objects for pressing into wet clay
Non-stick cooking spray
Sense of humor and willingness to play!
As always I love to read your comments and let me know what else you would like me to do a video tutorial about!

Jessica....I know this is an older video, and you may not see this.....but...how do you keep sprigs from warping if you don’t use them immediately? I make many sprigs at once to use on tiles....but sometimes they warp. Also, I agree with everyone else, no music. It actually detracts (and cheapens?) your videos. THANK YOU for making sprigs from clay...it was hard to find a video where anyone make them without plaster! I LOVE your videos and I have learned so much from you!

Thanks for your videos Jessica. I like the no music better. You keep a running, detailed commentary of what's happening with the clay and in your thinking about it. Love it. and and music makes it harder to concentrate and follow. I too encourage you to not edit your videos. I feel like you are my friend, right there across the table from me in the way you do your videos. editing would mess that up. I'm planning on carving some sprigs, as I'm really into the sgraffito right now. So this was a great intro. Thanks a bunch!

Nice, your essentially making your own ceramic mold stamps. Cool to get all those 3D texture affects on vases, pots,..etc. You can also fire the positive or negative molds to get indents as another affect basically your unlimited in what you can add for 3D designs provided you have a starter sculpture/initial object you want to uses. If you don't have a starter object your going to need to sculpt it from scratch. Very creative ideas as you could buy textured rollers but why if you can make your own with any design you want. Cool Cool Cool

Probably you know it, you're very special, I like your tutorials, about your sprig molds, i'd like to mention; instead of using slib, I think it's better to use vinegar, because there will not be too much clay round your sprig mold? I find it better to spray the clay instead of the object. It keeps from missing small areas which eventually stick to the clay. I haven’t had any trouble using it in reclaimed clay works.

I too like the real time videos. When you say, ‘“here’s the object I found and then just show what the finished mold looks like, we miss seeing the pressure you used to make it, how you had to use a knife to lift it out and you know it’s not a disaster when it sticks. How you picked it up and moved it to a fresh bat and more. There are many videos of potters throwing a pot on a wheel. They speed up the video so you have no idea how long it took them to make the pot, how fast the wheel was going, hand positions, pressure. So many details are lost. It is not possible to do something just exactly how someone else does it but it gives one a real time demonstration. Oh, and repetitive background music is unnecessary and to me annoying. I would rather hear you give more instructional pointers.
