Way to go .. so my son works for a restaurant supply where the restaurants pick up their meat or any supplies they need and he gets a great discount so he buys me that pack of meat quite often and I do the same. I put it in 1 pound portions and food save it and put it in my freezer now he does that with the meat for tacos or slithered meat he does that as well and anything I even need for the garden you know the restaurant supply sells them giant scoops for ice but I use them for soil in my garden. I can buy from the restaurant supply I have discount is way much better so I buy a lot of bulk items and I do freeze. I buy a bowl of cheese and I freeze it. We are only three I am an empty Nester , I have three grown boys with their families of their own so we really don’t go through too much but I do like to buy in bulk so we don’t get out. My husband is very sick and my father-in-law has dementia so it’s kinda hard for me to get out…plus I feel I save money buying in bulk. There’s a store here in Houston Texas called Joey‘s and I can buy a flat of something for like so cheap. I do my own beans. I even freeze my beans if I don’t can them freezer meals I wish I could but what I do is, I’ll cook an item in the next day, we have a different way so if I make a chicken baked chicken the next day, Wood making chicken tacos with roast roast roast beef tacos🌮 🥘

@calicocowacres
@calicocowacres 18 күн бұрын
Our salvage store is like a discount store that various groceries send their “old” stock or about-to-expire items just to make room for new stuff on their shelves. They exist all over the place, I don’t usually say the name publicly so I just call it “the salvage store”. You can get breads, frozen food, meat, produce, boxed items etc even pet food for a massive discount. We have gotten our cat food that’s usually $45 per bag for $5 a bag, organic canned foods for 25 cents, organic cereal for 50 cents, ice cream (Ben & Jerry’s!) for $1. It’s a magical place😆

I was wondering, how much do you really save making your own yogurt at home - and then you answered. Thanks. And then I sat back and watched the rest and you came through with the execution and costing for the rest. You obviously invested a lot of time (and love) in the prep. How would you guess-ti-mate your personal labor cost into this? I realize that this is not necessarily an easy, or even fair, question. But, do you feel it was worth your time and would you keep doing it? I say that having made home-canned food and afterwards thinking, next time I'll just buy the can....and then getting disgusted at the cost and can contents at the store and doing it all again. It really has to have that ingredient of love in it.
@calicocowacres

This is such a great question. I will say that I’m not a purist whatsoever with this stuff, so obviously I prefer to use high quality ingredients/buy high quality products but saving money is a big motivator for me, too, as well as time. It just depends on which thing I need to “save” more on any given day. Examples: - when these jars run out, if I haven’t had time to prep more of them I won’t hesitate to grab a can of manwich etc in a pinch. Sometimes that’s the easiest option and it’s okay. - it was raining nonstop this weekend, so my time was put to good use in the kitchen. Itll save me a lot of time running to the store, preparing individual future meals when it’s 9pm coming in from the garden and I’m starving. So in this circumstance, spending the time that I had available was worth it to me. - maybe in the future I will have more money to dedicate to high quality ingredients as opposed to the salvage store ingredients that I don’t really have a good gauge on quality/sourcing. Each of these scenarios “save” me different things. They either save time, save money, or favor quality. BUT the biggest factor? I enjoy cooking. Spending time in the kitchen makes me happy. If it didn’t, I would probably prioritize convenience more. So my labor cost doesn’t really factor in hugely for me because I just truly enjoy it. I hope this gives some insight😅❤️

I think by doing your own thing or loosely following a recipe is amazing. I also love the math. The only thing i have a question about is the canning, if it is tomato based are you able to have more freedom because of the acid in tomatoes? Sorry if this is a silly question but i always hear that it is dangerous nit to follow the recipe. Thanks for videos.
@calicocowacres
@calicocowacres 18 күн бұрын
You want to make sure the acidity ratio stays above the threshold of safety, but I’m just adding additional seasonings. If I were majorly changing it in other ways then I’d probably pressure can it.
@calicocowacres
@calicocowacres 18 күн бұрын
Also, with the BBQ sauce regarding the starch. The reason starch isn’t supposed to be used in canning is because it can make things too thick for the heat to reach the center properly, but this sauce is no thicker than an applesauce/apple butter and im not concerned personally, but, again, it’s a decision you have to make for yourself & do your own research. I try to be quite cautious with canning.

It was the cheapest one I could buy on prime day last July. It’s still going strong & only cost me $20, but it’s nothing special. I doubt it’ll last more than two years if I’m being honest. I’ll likely upgrade when I have the funds.
