I really enjoy your videos. It helps in making a decision about which Japanese maples to add to my collection. I also appreciate this video because it shows the transitioning colors, not just the initial flush. Great job!

Love the content! The Japanese maple addiction has set in heavily. Good new is I have a large backyard with a blank canvas! Anyway, I’m so interested in the aloe at 4:25. It’s so unique and looks out of this world! Thanks! Cheers mate

That aloe is a cultivar called 'Mr. Spiney'. It's an A. x spinosissima x marlothii hybrid. It's definitely a crazy looking cultivar. Thanks for watching!

Hey thanks a lot for your recommendations and expertise. One of the brothers told me you might be making a trip east to see Matt and Tim? I picked up a big Gosammer at their first open house. Very interesting Japonicum. Just wondered if you've had Yellow Cascade and what you thought of it. I got a couple of them at MrMaple and their doing great so far. A little different than Dragon Master! Who is definitely one of my favorites.

You're welcome. I am going to be in South Carolina in July. I'm going to try to fit in a little road trip to see Mr Maple. I haven't tried Yellow Cascade yet. It looks nice though.

Great video! Just wondering what zone are you in? I'm in zone 9b, not too many cultivars can handle the heat wave in summer here.
@maplecollector4398
@maplecollector4398 Жыл бұрын
Thank you! My USDA hardiness zone isn't a good indicator of my area's heat index. USDA zones are designed specifically for cold hardiness and not heat hardiness. I'm in USDA zone 10a but I prefer using the Sunset Western zone map which gives a better explanation of my climate. I'm in Sunset Western zone 17, which has mild summers.

to save the dying tree ide chop it to a stump or near to it let it start again better than to loose it.hope it helps,if you dont want to just cut it down so its smaller
@maplecollector4398
@maplecollector4398 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the suggestion. I've done that before and it usually works but then changes the form of the tree. I decided to just let it recover and it's actually coming back nicely.

Love the mikawa family you have in the other video. I live in Fremont and want to collect these mikawa also. Do you know where to buy them? I got a large original mikawa from momiji. But they don't have other variations. Thanks.
@maplecollector4398
@maplecollector4398 Жыл бұрын
I would think that Momiji gets them but probably sells out quickly. I buy most of my trees online. This style of tree tends to sell out quickly everywhere though.

@maplecollector4398

Maple species from section palmata will hybridize with each other. Collect the seeds and grow them. You can find some seedlings with unique traits.

Welcome back my fellow East Bay maple collector! I always look forward to your videos. I have some of your maples like Amber ghost they don’t look as nice (in Berkeley here). Do you ever do host a in person tour?😅 Question for you, what fertilizer do you use?
@maplecollector4398
@maplecollector4398 Жыл бұрын
I haven't done any tours. Maybe in the future. Although my yard is so small, I'm afraid it would be underwhelming. Fertilizer is a tricky subject that I don't like to get into. I do occasionally use various fertilizers although very rarely. In most cases, they aren't necessary.

I bought a Japanese Princess two months ago and the leaves turned brown and fell off. You ever have this problem before? I repotted it. Not sure if it’s because of overwatering and all the random showers we have been getting. It was also in a shady spot. Not sure what to do, I feel like it’s slowly dying 😢
@maplecollector4398
@maplecollector4398 Жыл бұрын
I have had trees die, from various reasons, over the years. There's no way for me to know what's going on with yours but over watering could definitely be the reason. Japanese Princess also likes the sun. I wouldn't keep it in the shade.

Thank you! That is Acer anhweiense. It was purchased as Acer robustum and is probably often still sold under this name. The name was recently changed back to Acer anhweiense (W.P. Fang & M.Y. Fang), which I believe was the original name given to it when it was first classified in 1966.

I have a twomblys red sentinel like you. I just got mine and planted it in a large pot on my back porch. It gets pretty much full sun and i live in Dallas. My issue is that it is about a third of the leaves are green. Is this a issue you have had?
@maplecollector4398
@maplecollector4398 Жыл бұрын
That might be due to shadows cast by the leaves. Take a look a the leaves that are green while the sun is hitting the tree. If the green leaves are being shaded, that's what it is. Mine doesn't have that.

Oh man, you have me wondering if I should go with Amber Ghost over Bronze Age.
@maplecollector4398
@maplecollector4398 11 ай бұрын
Amber Ghost is one of the best Japanese maple cultivars. You can have three and place them each in different sun exposures and you would swear that each is a different tree, each with outstanding but with different color changes throughout the year. With Bronze Age, you have to place it in the perfect spot for the most ideal color changes. It is a nice cultivar and worth having though.
