I have few no dig compost beds and had great results with them, but I can't make enough compost so only option is buying, and its either expensive or you're not sure what you're getting. I'm preparing space for two beds with your method, don't have yet enough leaves but fall will come eventually. What I do have is some potatoes planted in leaf and soil mix, they started better than what my father in law planted in soil. So we will see, we have bet going on 😂😂 My kid has asperger so spending time in garden is really great for him. Right now he is excited that he can help collect the leaves. Thx for sharing your knowledge.

Just to let you know you only need compost one time. I will give you a link to a video about real soil, To grow anything organic you need soil biology. This is the same groups of microbes that is found in compost., You need them to live in your soil of sand , silt and clay. I am delight to here and your son happiness enjoying gardening with you. @@iamorganicgardening Thank you for link, I already watched it. Had 2 compost bed from last year and with busy life its hard to make enough compost myself to sustain garden. So your method seems really great. One question though, when you are building beds with your soil and leaves would it be smart to introduce extra mycelium from liquid culture or some other source to increase the speed of fungal decomposition?

I added a fairly bit of compost to the tops of my pots. Any old tomato roots in the older potting soil below may have some left over tomato roots, but I didn't have root diseases on last year's tomatoes so I think I'll be largely fine. I think my tomato leaf symptoms have started to go away. I opened my windows and opened a vent in the grow tent so I think the air circulation in the tent is better and I've started to pot up the plants into larger pots so that the whole football can be in potting soil. I think part of the issue might have been too many roots where outside the holes of the container and the moisture on and off started to affect general plant health. Either way, the purple leaves are subsiding, some new problems but they're not as serious it seems. Let's hope they keep in growinnnnn

@iamorganicgardening
@iamorganicgardening Жыл бұрын
The good news is that is has a living root in the ground all the time. When the leaves are on the tree it is feeding the fungi in the soil thru the roots called exudates of sugar, crabs and proteins to feed the fungi and keep the soil healthy. So no really big concern. Nature is awesome

I don't think there is much if any fungal life left in coconut coir after processing. Hot salt water/steam is often used based to soften the fibers for stripping/removal based on a Science Direct article I read. If any fungi is left after the extensive processing including heat, compression, storage & long travel time, it would only be useful to the tropical area where it was harvested. If you need organic matter & local leaves are not available &/or a cover crop is not doable, leaving micro shredded cardboard in place on the surface to bread down/feed worms is likely a better option. Coconut coir is fairly devoid of what we want as "soil life." A cardboard box sitting under a tree likely has more fungi.
@iamorganicgardening
@iamorganicgardening Жыл бұрын
Great question & statement. I should have been more clear. Place the coir on top of your soil for as long as you can .Like place down coir in the fall and let you local fungi start to eat and live in it before this method is used . The main thing it is fungi food, like cardboard. OH, you can take the cardboard from under the tree an inoculant the sterile coir. Also before using it.. Or just add worm casting to it also. Both will worm great. Thanks

Hello, And THANK YOU for your help today answering a sub question. Yes, Made tea over the years but found adding leaf mold on top of the soil does the same thing. Yes, Helpful. Water is the key to all microbes life. Yes, Fungi will grow as deep as long there is food , air and water. My winter rye cover crop roots in my farm field grows 2 to 4 feet deep and feeds fungi the deep also or even more.

Is there a fungi spore that can be dumped all over the soil, then punch the holes, and then cover with leaves? Would that be a quick way to get that fungi growing?

Looks like you’re aerating your soil. Are mushrooms the flower of a fungus? If I see mushrooms does that mean I have too much fungus?
@iamorganicgardening
@iamorganicgardening Жыл бұрын
The holes I am making will let the leaf mold ( fungi food ) go deeper in the soil to give the soil a better health between bacteria and fungi. This is good , and how nature works on it own for plant health. Yes, mushrooms tops at where to spores are release from. No, it you see mushrooms all is OK. Hopefully you will see many types or kinds in your garden which means a healthy soil. THANK YOU for asking

Hi Mark... when you say "leaf mold" are you talking about leaves that have not been composted at all? I've watched videos of people making leaf mold various ways through composting. Some of them say it can take a year to get leaf mold. So when I see you putting leaves on your garden and fields and you call it "leaf mold", I'm confused. Please elaborate. Thanks, Mark!
@iamorganicgardening
@iamorganicgardening Жыл бұрын
Hi, Thanks for asking. First I think I see the confusion, I also seen those videos to and laugh at them . Leaf mold makes itself. When leaves contact the ground they start to decay by fungi. We do not have to do anything else to them. Nature does this on it own. We can add water if it is dry to help the fungi live. The fungi spores is on the leaves already when it falls from the tree or plants. Hope this is helpful.

@@iamorganicgardening thanks, Mark! I'm happy to hear that leaf mold is an easy natural process! I've been looking into Korean natural Farming. I've been trying to "bloom" my own IMO's (Indigenous MicroOrganisms)... but no luck so far. I live north of Boulder, CO. Arid. Dry. Clay! We've also been looking into Dr. E. Ingham's work. We recently bought a microscope to analyze our composts and "soil"... tying to get the biology to grow and thrive. Do you have any suggestions for collecting IMO's to add to a substrate that can be used in our home gardens? Thanks for your informative videos, Mark!

@@iamorganicgardening We have raspberries, blackberries, lots of comfrey, and in raised beds we have, goji berries, sun chokes, and elderberry bushes, also apple trees and some pines. In another post I mentioned that we just got a microscope and hopefully we'll learn to identify what biology is present. I remember your videos about endo and eckto mycorrhiza and how you gathered the needed biology from the pine trees for one type of fungi ... it was confusing to me. Now I'm trying to collect IMO's (Indigenous MicroOrganisms) from our area. No luck so far. I learned about it from Korean Natural Farming. Last fall I also made some fermented extracts from our comfrey according to YT I've watched about KNF... But I'm unclear about how to use this extract. Please talk more about the tea you made from Raspberries. Hopefully you'll elaborate on this at some point. Also I'd like to hear you talk about how to collect IMO's. It's confusing bc I don't know how and where to apply what I've collected (assuming I'll actually succeed at collecting)
