Spring Strawberry Plant Care Basics: Containers, Pruning, Compost, Fertilizing, and Nitrogen Time!

This is how I get my container strawberry plants ready for the spring and summer production. I prune, lightly add some organic granular fertilizer, add some compost, and water them in well with a water soluble organic fertilizer. All the steps to get your plants growing and going.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN is it ok to leave straw around strawberries all year around? (not on the plants). just a small layer, like maybe half inch, to retain some moisture and keep the sunlight off the compost, and change the straw every year to keep fresh.

In my zone - 4 - we really need to plant them directly in the ground for them to make it through the winter. We get down to -20 or some years -30 for weeks at a time. Just wanted to note that for anyone in a very cold climate. :)

You hooked me in 🙌🏻 The towers are really interesting as they stand tall in your garden. When I was younger my Dad and I tended to his kitties garden. The strawberry patch thrives in mulch we made from last years leaves. My Dad drive for Greyhound Bus line so I many data I had to hold down the garden to water and tend to snails at night with salt. This garden was no joke. Dad kept a journal of every single strawberry we picked. I ate so many which were recorded to the books. I am certain. lol. So many we picked one season that mom sliced them up with some white sugar to freeze. Gosh what a treat. You have inspired me and a new sub

Good morning Gary, I've been watching your channel for 4 years and love your advice and instruction. I hope you can advise me further. I have 7 Strawberry Plants in a 48inch high raised bed on my porch because i'm disabled. this will be the 2nd year the plants been in this raised bed. This spring I got them ready for the season as I've seen on your video. However, for the past 3 1/2 weeks my plants have been stressed. when I first saw aphids I bought a hand held sprayer and using only water sprayed the way you suggested to keep them under control. When getting the ready for the season I also say the browning going around the healthy leaves so I removed them completely also in like your video, and I change watering can so i could reduce the risk of splashing the leaves and soil around. My plants have also had fish emoulson and food on a seperate but regular schedule. Since the last feeding 3 days ago the leaves are dying. Please advise me if i should do a baking soda, peppermint or rosemary essential oil method or something else. I've also already decided to take the one plant that is still showing no signs of disease or stress and transplant to a flower box. Thank you in advance for all your help and grateful that you keep up to date for all of us

My alpine strawberry sprouts are still too small to tease apart and transplant. they are in their sixth week since sprouting. I believe they will be large enough to transplant in about three more weeks. The other day, it got to 80 degrees here in central Alabama, and I had my first unwanted visitor, a small cotton mouth snake. Needless to say, I urged it to move on to another area. I have one acre pond on the back end om my property, and woods on all sides of it. There are plenty of other places for it to sun itself.

Put some rotted pine board, or cedar picket fencing around for them to hide in . Every day squish them. They are quickly destroyed in about a week.

I've bought the smaller Leaf Greenstalks, and I'm thinking that I should move them to the smaller container so I can make better use of space. (I have lots of new strawberry crowns to plant.) Hi Gary I have been thinking about this for awhile now. Here in Florida most strawberries are treated as an annual. Planting dates for strawberries in Florida are always in the fall. But root stock and plants for sale are always in the spring. You see where I am going with this, so here is a quick version. Will strawberry plants survive the Florida summers. I will only be buying strawberries for zone 9, but what can I do to get them through the hot summer months.

They say they are good for 5 years but I have new plants popping up all the time so I never know how old they are. Gary, been following you for 3 years now. Have helped me a lot. Started with 10x10 now a mega 40x30 terraced raised garden on a 30 degree slope. Been a lot of work but your vertical gardening tricks have paid off. Feeding half the neighbors now. Lol. QUESTION: want to try the green stalk towers on our deck for primarily herbs and strawberries. Zone 8b. Would you recommend the original or the leaf with shallower sections? Thanks my friend. I like the vertical for strawberries. These are deep pockets. They love it and I get a lot of plants in a 3x3 foot space. Doves have made a nest in my strawberry hanging basket. The baby birds are just about to leave the nest. I will be removing the nest when they leave. Is the plant still safe to eat off of after birds nested in it??

Container strawberries must be treated different because everything I've learned says fertilize after you harvest fruit in late summer early fall not in spring because if you do fertilize in spring you get lots of green foliage and no fruit but I guess in containers they don't have much reserve for nutrients have a few container strawberries but mostly in ground and I treat them all the same and they all produce great of course more than one way to grow things.

Correct. Every university extension publication I've read says to fertilize in the fall. You may need to fertilize in late winter if you have very sandy soil, but from what I've read fertilizing too late causes the berries to be too soft.

Hi Gary, I have Ozark strawberries in my 4x8 feets raised bed and plan to fertilize them with Garden tone only. Should I fertilize each plant in the bed 1/3 cup per plant this spring and again in Fall. I am so confusing on how to fertilize strawberry. Also some people suggest not to fertilize them at all in spring. I am zone 7 MD Thank you Gary.

How have the towers fared in the UV? Some of the plastic planters I've had go brittle in just a year even though they are meant for outdoors. I'll try to baby them for another season but they eventually crumble and crack.

Hi Gary, Your videos are very informative and interesting. I have a QUESTION about strawberries in a raised bed. My strawberry plants are doing well, but last year after protecting them from rodents and birds I noticed that these little worms were eating the strawberry fruits right before they were ready to pick. On one of your videos you were drenching the beds you prepped with a Neem oil/ water/ soap mixture. Do you think this would help the prevent this problem? Or is there another method to use. It is cold up here in Pennsylvania today and the strawberry plants look good and have started to bloom.

I think that it would. The drench does manage a lot of insects and worms but I can't say for sure. I think that is worth a try. I dont know of an alternative for getting in the soil. Great video Gary as always and just when I needed it. Last year the snails and some kind of black bug got all my strawberries. I got me a big box of snail bait this year. I was wondering would digging them up and raising the bed stop that or would it be about the same and its all about the spray routine im guessing its a neem oil spray.

Zone 6b/7a here. I just bought my very first container of strawberry plants. It looks like there are several varieties in it and they look really crowded. The sign with them said they could be kept and grown in that container but I'm thinking they should be repotted, if for nothing else to give them better soil, space and compost. Would a tower or a regular container be better for them? Right now I have them inside since we'll be below freezing for a couple more nights.

Thanks for this great video! I have a question-I have strawberry plants in containers and the first year we got some fruit, the second year no fruit at all, and this will be the 3rd year. I’m in NJ and kept the containers in the garage for the winter and just took them out to prune. Are they a lost cause since they didn’t produce any fruit last year? Or is it worth it to fertilize like you said and cross my fingers? Any other tips to get them to fruit? Thanks!!

Next time, leave them outside to overwinter. I'm in Philly and I brought in one container but left the other outside over the winter. The outside one came back in the spring but the one brought inside all never came back. I feel like they need the cold to go dormant, and the ones in your garage didn't get cold enough. I hope I'm wrong and they came back eventually! Just speaking from experience from a similar zone 😊

Question Gary, I’m located in Ontario Canada zone 4b, last summer I purchased some crowns, they seemed to be dry but I bought them regardless.. things got away on me and I forgot about them and just found them again in their original package and seem to be the same as when I bought them, dry. They’ve been indoors not out in the elements, so I wonder if and when the weather permits me to get an area prepped, do you thing they will have a chance to grow?

My sun tracks well but some towers have spinners on the base you can buy... I just turn them when I walk buy. Otherwise a side stays more shaded but they all get sun. So I make it. Or I buy a local municipal product called Leaf Gro. I dont have a recommendation as the vary so much bag to bag and garden to garden across the US. Try local nurseries and see if they make it and do a truck dump. It saves you money. You have to find a good resource and then stick with that company. Thanks! So in 5 years. I lost one tower and that was this winter. I just picked it up and it was fine. It was dry and we had 50 mile hour winds. So they are pretty solid. If a high wind day is coming just soak them in.
