Your excitement is contagious! I’m in Phoenix area and I love this time of year too! My loquat season is pretty much done as we get there sooner here. Great work man! Yard looking good!

Your yard looks fantastic; abundance is on the horizon. Penny, Dime, and Nickel are lucky girls! Couldn't ask for a better yard to scratch around in. Just be careful walking. I nearly sprained my ankle a few times when I first added my hens; they have a tendency to dig little ditches everywhere and move the mulch around.

Thank you for the tip. For now, due to the amount of mulch, they’re not digging too deep. That said, I do have a small section of my old vegetable bed with native dirt that they enjoy taking dirt baths in.

Thank you. You’ll find that the fruits grown from your trees, even the unripen ones are magnitudes better tasting than any store bought ones. An added benefit is the fact that you can pick only the ripen fruits while letting the rest remain to ripen on the tree.

@@TropicalCentralValley Will coconut palms fruit in SoCal?
@TropicalCentralValley
@TropicalCentralValley 3 ай бұрын
Not having first hand experience with Southern California climate, and only knowing it’s USDA Zone 10ish, I’m sure you can, with heavy microclimating. Though I can’t see why anyone would want to grow it, given coconuts are readily available and for cheap.

I do and having tasted them in Laos, they were good. The issue is, where to obtain the trees in California.

@TropicalCentralValley

Thank you. We try, but there’s only so many fruits we can eat in a day. Any that are not eaten gets recycled back into the ground.

Haven’t seen a yangmei in any of your videos. Have you tried growing one of those yet? Thinking about getting one but seeing how pricey they are I want to know that it’s doable in my zone 9b first.
@TropicalCentralValley

I tend to only grow fruit trees whose fruits I tasted in previous times. Another challenge too is that some of the trees aren’t easily obtained.

I also heard that yangmei is very finicky, and hard to grow. Only a handful of peopyare growing with success here in California

It is purportedly to grow in USDA Zone 10. Many of my tropical fruit trees should only grow in zone 10, but it’s really all about the microclimate that you can give them.

I have a ridiculous loquat in my backyard. it is 25-30 ft tall. underneath it is half patio concrete and the leaves and dropping fruit makes a mess, i try to harvest as much as i can but as you are aware of the amount of fruit from a tree that large is out of this world and very difficult to harvest at that size, i have a telescoping lopper that helps a bit but i cant possibly get all of them.
@TropicalCentralValley
@TropicalCentralValley Ай бұрын
Yeah, I’ve seen several loquat trees that are in the 30 feet range and yes, they are massive. I’m actually pondering taking mine down as it’s no longer practical for me to harvest many of the fruits, particularly near the top.

Thank you. Combination of iPhone 13 Pro Max and iPhone 15 Pro Max in ProRes RAW/LOG, with HDR. Edited with Final Cut Pro. I find the audio is a bigger issue. For this, I used a set of cheap wireless Lightning/USB-C lavalier microphone that does a phenomenal job of eliminating background noise. All credit goes to the camera person. Super steady shots.

I planted my trees with a 5' setback from the sidewalk, but still lost some fruits from time to time. A few weeks ago, two large cherimoyas of over 2 lb were gone one morning, one fruit was about 7' away from the sidewalk. It looks like some mango trees and ice-cream bean trees are along the public sidewalk, in previous years did you have issues with people picking your fruits from there?
@TropicalCentralValley
@TropicalCentralValley 3 ай бұрын
No issues with neighbors and others taking any of my fruits (yet). I suspect many are unfamiliar with the fruits and leaves them alone. It helps too that my neighborhood is somehow “nice”.

Does your loquat ever take a year off? Mine is a yearly producer and this year it has mostly put on leafy growth, but no fruit or flowers. I assume it is having a rest?
@TropicalCentralValley
@TropicalCentralValley 3 ай бұрын
That’s odd. Mine has not and has been consistently producing fruits yearly. I wouldn’t worry too much about it. The tree will likely produce much more fruits the following year.

How old are the tall loquat trees ? I have 2 that are 4 feet tall . The Big Jim has 2 clusters of 8 fruits . Very large too . My family all likes the taste . The Champagne was the tree i told you previously had the blossoms dried out . Its their second year in the ground . New leaves are gigantic . Should I remove the lower new branches ? Some grow above and below the graft ? Thanks
@TropicalCentralValley

Mine is about 15 feet tall, grown from seed. In year 3, I pruned my lower branches to give it more of a lollipop tree structure. I would prune to achieve your desired shape and size.

I cut the flower buds off of my palmer mango tree about a month ago since it has only been in the ground for a year but it just put out even more flowers. Not sure when I should cut it back again and how much.
@TropicalCentralValley
@TropicalCentralValley 3 ай бұрын
The trick with the mango flowers is to only remove about 90%, while leaving the remaining 10% on the tree. Doing so tricks the tree into thinking it still has flowers and not to put any more energy into pushing new flowers. The remaining 10% may then be removed at which point, the tree should know not to put out any new flowers.
