In 1999 Kaya Malotana made history by becoming the first black man to play a Test match for the Springboks. Kaya made his debut against Spain at the 1999 Rugby World Cup in a big win for the Boks. Unfortunately due to a series of injuries, Malotana would not get the opportunity to play a second Test.
In this fascinating discussion Kaya opens up on his journey from boarding school in the Eastern Cape to going all the way to the top and fulfilling an incredible dream by representing his country at a World Cup.
There were many political sensitivities at the time and Malotana is happy to discuss those issues in this candid and fun interview.

Peter says: I love the Springboks and rugby is one of my favourite sports. Although as a sports journalist I am supposed to remain neutral, I always like to point out that before I became a professional, I was just a big fan! I hold a Masters Degree in International Journalism so at least you know I should be able to ask a good question or two! My dream is to do this KZfaq Channel permanently. I always wondered what happened to his rugby career. I remember him being selected and then wondering why we didn't see more of him on the field. Injury robs us of a lot of talented players. Thanks for the stories. I watch almost all of these interviews and this one was great! Cheers!

What a great story and a great man, well done Kaya. Sadly for Kaya, he was a Bok 20 years too soon but a Trailblazer he was which helped to unlock the path for others to follow. I've always said rugby is a culture and Kaya understands that. You can't fast-track that experience and we are now seen the fruits of that more and more at the top of our game.

Thanks Gareth. Glad you enjoyed it. Kaya was the pioneer who paved the way for future superstars. Sadly he does not get the recognition but I'm hopeful that with this interview now being online forever, in time to come, he will get more credit. Really glad I could get him on the show!

@@frontrowrugby absolutely Peter and look at the path he has pioneered and hopefully more and more people will recognise and acknowledge the challenges he endured. Also wonderful to hear the mentorship he received from his father. We have so much diversity in culture in SA and it's wonderful how this great game can unify us as one.

What a lovely, considered bloke Kaya seems, and so interesting. I attended the '99 RWC 🇿🇦 v 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 game at Murrayfield, and though it was v exciting for me, I do remember being disappointed that that day's host team vs THE World Champions didn't get a sell out crowd (& 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 is my second team after the boks)! P.S. just in case he sees this, my eternal thanks to the SA gentlemen who gave me a ticket, that turned out to be prime in the middle of the pitch, about 2 rows back from the royal box! Couldn't believe my luck AND he wouldn't accept a penny from the extremely wet behind the ears 1st year student I was! Sincerely hope your friend was ok in the end.

Absolutely brilliant interview. I was living overseas when he played so unfortunately I never saw him play. I am absolutely blown away by him, his wisdom and knowledge of the game. 🇿🇦

The prank call story had me in stitches 😂...how times have changed thankfully with "token " players a thing of the past. You need to get Henry Honibal on for a chat

Nice interview Peter- Kaya seems like a nice guy! There must have been no atmosphere in Scotland in 1999- every bok you've had on your show said the same thing!
