Always interesting and informative, they give me a chance to see a country that I would have loved to have toured but that will probably never happen now. I have tears in my eyes after watching this video. Your honor, respect, and beautiful words touched my heart. My father took us on road trips in our Pontiac station wagon. My parents had ten of us kids so it was quite an endeavor. I can’t travel or drive anymore at 74 so I now ride along with you on your road trips. This tour of Abraham Lincoln’s tomb broke my heart. The monument is stunning, but the statues and interior of the tomb was so elegant and beautiful. I’m glad his family is also buried with him. I know “from dust we were created and to dust we return” , but at least he has the wife and children he loved close to him. Thank you so much for your respectful tone of voice, your love of history, and your love of old buildings and history. The capital building was astounding! The floor treatment, the statuesque light fixtures on the staircase, and the magnificent dome are totally Amazing! Thank you for the tour of the museum. As a current Springfield resident, there are two things I hoped you would have done and seen. First thing is that the tomb you were at is actually his second tomb, if you drive down to the bottom of the hill it sits in, you can see the first tomb where many grace robbers attempted to break in and steal his and Mary’s bodies. It’s honestly cooler than the current one imo. The second thing is that I hoped you would have gotten a horseshoe as it’s a Springfield staple! Obeds had them, but the best places are Dublin pub or Darcy’s pint. They are rivals since both claim to be have the original horseshoe recipe. I hope you come back and visit the state fair sometime because in the grandstand, a local funeral home has on display the horse drawn hearse used to carry Lincoln’s body. It’s quite a sight!

You solved a mystery for me today Mr Spoda! I was raised in Naperville, IL. When my parents passed away I received the family picture album. There is a black and white picture of me, my brother, and sister dated 1956 of us on a large building I couldn’t remember. Guess what? It’s taken on Lincoln’s Tomb! We were up on the stairs so back then they must have had it open. What a surprise for me! Thanks for the video and solving my mystery. Safe travels!

Lived most of my life in and around Spfld before moving to Texas. Spent many hours researching family history under the old capitol building downtown. Now it's in the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library. Lived within walking distance of the Illinois State Fair and I would walk the kids down there every year. The first book I ever bought with my own money was "Lincoln" by Stefan Lorant. I was in the 7th grade, and it was the beginning of my great love of history.

My father (1912-1999) and his siblings were born in this area in a village called Spalding (Spaulding). The nose on the Lincoln bust has a shiny spot because so many people have reached up and touched it over the years.

If yall drive less than an hour away to Carlinville, Illinois there is a multi million dollar courthouse, a jail same time error, a motel Abraham Lincoln stayed in, a brick square, and a home back then called Anderson Mansion its honestly a town as well to see if your visiting Abraham Lincoln stuff. Also around Springfield is a town called New Salem where Lincoln was raised as a young lad. This is the area I was born and raised at.

Lincolns original tomb was located behind the current tomb at the bottom of the hill. There were also several attempts to steal Lincoln's body as the tomb was being built. The reason he was buried ten feet down. Lincoln's body was viewed by his son years later to confirm it was his father. The body was said to be in remarkable condition due to the number of embalming that were done on the body's travel from Washington to Springfield.

My family and I visited Springfield for a long weekend a few years ago. We went to all the sites and it was one of my favorite vacations. Thanks for showing this, it brought back great memories. We toured the home, but we had to get tickets. They were free but they only allowed a few people at a time in the home. I especially loved the staircase bannister as it is original to the home. I liked to imagine Lincoln walking down touching the same bannister that i touched. Thank you.

Excellent job once again. Thank you for showing us the Lincoln sites. The Dana Thomas house is a must-see Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece when in Springfield. Its art glass is magnificent. Safe travels.

For those that wish to see the Lincoln home, free tours are available throughout the day, given by National Park Service Rangers. One block over is the National Park visitors center, and tickets for the free tours are available there. Depending on the weather and the crowd, they go out between every hour to two hours.

As a central Illinois native, I have spent many hours in Springfield. I love the Lincoln museum and home and have been to these and the tomb a lot. I also have read many books about Lincoln and live in the 8th circuit area that Lincoln practiced law in. I love the history of this area.

Just an FYI if you are ever there at lincoln's tomb you are supposed to rub the nose of the statue outside for good luck

Springfieldian here! Did you check out the two shows at the Museum, Lincoln's Eyes and Ghosts in the Library? Ghosts is my favorite of the two, and it's really informative about the kind of things that are kept or circulated through them... and it makes much more sense why they'll only let you on the first floor lol. And they do let you go into Lincoln's Home, you just have to be part of a scheduled tour (tickets are free, but they're distributed first come, first serve). Glad you enjoyed yourselves!

I visited the park several years ago and it was fascinating. Rangers in ranger uniforms, enactors in period costumes, uniformed union soldiers on horseback! Also the old Illinois capitol and Lincoln's desk in the capitol. A worthwhile trip, especially for history buffs.

I've been to a few Lincoln sites, but visiting that cemetery in 2011 was one of the greatest tourist experiences I've ever had. We also had the place to ourselves and got a private tour from someone who worked or volunteered there. ... They do give tours of his house if you go at the right time. But I think we stopped at the national park tourist center first and bought a ticket for that.

We live in Springfield, IL, and I've been looking forward to your doing a video here. Did you happen to notice the shiny nose on Lincoln's bust in front of his tomb? That's because there's a legend that rubbing his nose brings good luck. I've rubbed it a couple times, not because I'm superstitious, but it's just a local tradition. You just barely scratched the surface of Lincoln's history in the Springfield area. In March, 1830, the Lincoln family settled in Macon County, IL on the north side of the Sangamon River. Their home was about 35 miles east of Springfield. A year later, Abe piloted a flatboat that navigated the Sangamon, Illinois, and Mississippi Rivers to take supplies to New Orleans. The boat got stuck on a dam near the town of New Salem, just a few miles northwest of Springfield, and it took him several hours to free it. On his return, he settled in New Salem. He became partner in a store there. The original town no longer exists. Most of the population, ALONG WITH THE HOMES, were moved to Petersburg to the north. In the 1930's the town was reconstructed to look as close as possible to the way it was when Lincoln was there, and is a fascinating place to visit. Lincoln's tomb (under the memorial you saw) is encased in 2 tons of Portland cement. This is because on Nov. 7, 1876, there was an attempt to steal his body. The plot was hatched by a gang of Chicago counterfeiters. Their chief engraver had been arrested, and they planned to take Lincoln's body and exchange it for the freedom of their partner. The plot came to the attention of the Secret Service, which was involved not because Lincoln had been president, but for their original purpose of stopping counterfeiters. Ironically, it was Lincoln who, as President, had originally formed the Secret Service! I won't go into more detail. Suffice it to say that the whole story is like a Keystone Cops comedy, because of the ineptness of both the good guys and the bad guys. By the way, the Dana-Thomas House and Lincoln's house are both open for tours. The Old Capitol is also generally open for tours, but is periodically closed for maintenance. You were just there at the wrong time. Oh, and we love Obed and Isaac's. Their flatbreads are wonderful!!

First, as a resident of springfield most of my life, I appreciate the reminder of some of the very cool stuff we have here. You tend to forget when you live here. Second, sorry you couldn’t get into his home, it’s a very cool tour, so come back if you pass through! I did some consulting work in Springfield a number of years ago. The were in the process of building the library and museum. Now I need to go back to visit it. One thing I appreciated about Springfield is that the people were very nice.

For some reason I'd always wanted to see Lincoln's home in Springfield so I'm happy to hear that you found it well worth-while. I think I had seen a tour by C-SPAN many years ago when they took a bus around the country and visited Presidential homes (I think they also went inside). Anyway so glad they kept the neighborhood the way they did. I put a star on the map to visit someday but after watching your video I think I'll upgrade the star and try and get there this year. I'd like to see the museums as well.

This has been a very stand out video. Besides your normal great narration Springfield's seems a beautiful place to live or visit. The Capital building was just beautiful and all of the Lincoln Tributes are just so very well done. They should be very proud. 🇺🇲

I moved from the suburbs of Chicago to Springfield when I was 25 years old before relocating to Atlanta 3 years ago. When I visited the Lincoln Museum I was overwhelmed with tears at the scene you showed at 28:07. They have wonderfully preserved historic sites. The race riot was interesting to learn about as well as the NAACP's beginning in Springfield.

If you are lucky you can catch a glimpse of TaekwonJoe the homeless man who likes to do martial arts movements and hip thrusts in front of the cathedral during the day in Springfield. Sometimes he’s doing martial arts, sometimes he doing hip thrusts at traffic as they wait by the light, and other times he’s laying shirtless on the concrete looking directly into the sun. He’s a Springfield landmark for sure.

Hi Joe, I was born there and have been back many times. My grandparents rented a home down the street from the capital. The home was around when Abraham Lincoln walked the streets to the capital.

The first courtroom Lincoln practiced law in us in Decatur, IL. at the Macon County historical museum. If you ever visit in the summer and go in don’t shut the front door. It’s an old cabin and was also the first courthouse for Decatur.

We went with our 3 boy scouts in 1992, when thousands of scouts were there. A few decades earlier, we went, before our kids, and the Lincolns were then entombed in the side of the hill, behind the bared gate, as you drove in, to your left.

This is a gorgeous monument! I have some awesome black and whit pictures I got inside and out of this place.

This vlog is for those who admire this man to see his memorial. An actual visit will be engaging.

I have been here several times. A fabulous place to honor our president. Truly a beautiful place and a place to offer respect. Words cannot describe the feeling at the tomb. All of Springfield is a truly special place. Close by is Lincoln’s New Salem….another place not to miss.

One statistic about Illinois as a whole It has the second highest property taxes in the country New Jersey being the highest.

Went to college and even lived there for a time. Interesting little city isn’t it? Loved it but after so many years I was ready to be out. North of the state is definitely more populated and nicer. But I love this place holds a very special home in my heart.

Was in Springfield last weekend. Haven't been there in years. I love my state but seems like if it isn't Chicago area or Champaign.... it's dying.
