Apologizing, feeling sorry for someone or excusing yourself in Spanish are things that use different terminology. And, apologizing is not the ideal context to make mistakes, since it can only add to an already awkward situation. Most of it won’t get you in trouble, but it is necessary to know what the differences between terms like: “lo siento” and “lo lamento” could be, so you can navigate apologizing, being supportive and well mannered in Spanish like a true native speaker.

"la" means "her" as a direct object: "I see her" or, as in this case, "I hear her." "le" means, more specifically, "to her" or "for her" because it's an indirect object. In Spain, they often use "le" where they should use "lo" or "la", but generally "lo" and "la" are used where you don't need to put the words "to" or "for" in front of the pronoun.
