Springtails act as minute "Tank Janitors" in a terrarium, eating mold and waste. They also make a great supplemental food source for your poison dart frogs.
With these little microfaunae often come big questions. Josh's Frogs expert customer service crew has compiled many of the most common inquiries. From this list, we made this video to show how easy it is to keep, care, and culture these critters to work hard for you and the tank in which they reside.

The view of a mature culture led me to expect a lot of adults on arrival Not in February. The Springtails arrive with an instruction sheet. Wish I had read it first. Basically is says in cold weather the adults die. However there should be viable eggs, wait a few weeks for adults.

Hoping for some feedback on this. Making every effort to NOT panic. Built a springtail culture container as per most of the instructions found on line. Could not find large pieces of the charcole so bought some small size stuff from Amazon. Dumped the entire container of springtaIls into the culture container and it was slow to start but doing great...till now. Noticed a very obvious decline in the number of them lately. Just today I finally saw what is likely most of the problem...black soldier fly larvae in my culture container. I have quite a few of them in my terrarium, but thought nothing of it till it got to 4-6 hatching every day in there. Yet one more serious problem. But the springtails are supposed to be FOR the terrarium. So I have been using a small piece of tree bark to transfer them to the terrarium. But apparently after the bark is clear of them and I put it back into the culture container, that some of the adult black soldier flies have laid eggs on the bark and those have hatched in my springtail culture container. I can dump the entire container and start over. But is that my only option ?

I’m having a difficult time increasing my springtails I ordered from you, in no way am I speaking negatively about your product and on the contrary it’s my possible lack of skills. I’ve feed them the special food as mentioned in the bottle and it’s been about 3 months that I’ve kept them in a pre washed charcoal chemical free organic quality. I open the lid 2 and sometimes 3 times a day for about 5 minutes, I have water in the container and occasionally mist some on top. Am I doing something wrong?

Do y'all have any advice on using these in arid setups? I have several species of desert scorpions with live plants in the enclosures and I figure some springtails couldn't hurt. I'm afraid to use isopods and risk stressing the animals out during molt, especially the scorplings that aren't much bigger than the isopods themselves.

How do you know how many springtails to pour inside the enclosure? And why charcoal? Can we actually use substrate to cultivate them?
@JoshsFrogs
@JoshsFrogs 5 жыл бұрын
It all depends on if you want to culture them yourself or not. If you don't want to worry about culturing them yourself, dump them all in. If you'd like to culture them yourself, just dump some of the water in your tank and set up a culture and breed them like this: www.joshsfrogs.com/catalog/blog/2014/08/culture-springtails/

@JoshsFrogs
@JoshsFrogs 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Maria! That's a great question!! When you add springtails to your tanks they will reproduce. Simply dump the entire springtail culture in your terrarium and mix the charcoal in the springtail culture right into your substrate. Feed them weekly with Josh's Frogs Spring to Life Springtail Food . If you are not adding to terrariums, we recommend that you buy a starter culture and use it start a larger culture (we use 5 qt. Sterilite containers). Larger cultures produce better and are less prone to CO2 buildup. If you use this smaller culture to start a larger culture to feed froglets or seed multiple tanks, allow the culture to grow for a month before use. I hope you find these links helpful!! www.joshsfrogs.com/catalog/blog/springtails/ www.joshsfrogs.com/catalog/blog/2008/06/culturing-springtails/ www.joshsfrogs.com/catalog/blog/2014/08/culture-springtails/ www.joshsfrogs.com/catalog/blog/2011/11/microfauna-part-i/ Deana :)
