I was stationed in West Berlin when Sprockets first came out. I loved it so much because I would see Dieter types everyday in the city. It was fantastic and had me laughing nearly every day.

I was stationed in Frankfurt with the 3rd Armored Division in the early 80's, and when this skit first came out I nearly died laughing. So accurate a depiction of what I saw on German TV.

Dieter is a fairly accurate characterization of the German avant garde art, film and techno/jazz scene at the time.

Yes. Your observation is much more correct and spot on as opposed to those who assign Der Sprockets to Goth Rock/ Industrial genres. Rob Loews hilarious appearance on a SNL skit as a Goth Rocker, was closer to the truth.

Mike Myers said that they would go to this restaurant everyday for lunch and order the same items: Hotdog and Pepsi. The waiter, a German dude who looked like Dieter, finally said: "I grow bored with your order!" and hence the idea for sprockets.

I never stopped being weird, it's the only thing that keeps me from losing my shit. Just before Halloween, I dressed 4 of my goats in costumes just to take silly video. Totally pointless and a waste of time, but it was fun, and the goats didn't mind!

True, I Spent 3 yrs With German and Eastern European immigrants after the Soviet Union fell. After awhile I couldn't tell the Real world from their Madness that they did or said. A One legged Best German Dude playing guitar one minute then screwing his boyfriend holding on the the bathroom sink in front of us all. Heavy make up and cologne but nobody taking a shower. Everyone drunk or high 24/7. Even whipping paint thinner when broke. One minute dancing the next minute someone being throwing through a window. A 25 yr old guy tries to castrate himself because he's impotent and his girlfriend is cheating on him. Everyone was a writer, musician or artist suffering for their Art.

Yep. From Krautrock through to NDW, Goth/Industrial, Techno, etc. It’s basically early 80’s Kraftwerk, Einstürzende Neubauten and the West Berlin scene, with contemporary art and elements of New German Cinema (Fassbinder, Herzog, Wenders) and nihilist horror films like Angst (1983), Nekromantik (1988), etc.

This was supposed to be a movie starring Mike Myers, Will Ferrell, and would have been the first major film for Jack Black, but Myers backed out early in production basically as he felt the movie was going to suck. Myers was sued by the studio and as part of the lawsuit he was forced to star in The Cat in the Hat movie. True story.

This was supposed to be a movie in 1999 with Myers, Ferrell and Jack Black but Mike Myers backed out midway through production as he basically felt the movie was going to be a flop. Myers was successfully sued by the studio for several million dollars and as part of the lawsuit was forced to star in the movie 'The Cat in the Hat'

@@vaccumsealed I hate it from the moment the 1995 season started with Will Ferrell and others. The writing went to hell almost overnight. Clever ideas and dialogue were replaced with frantic overacting. The era you describe above with Myers, Carvey and Hartman was some of the best comedy that's ever been on television.

This sketch was a massive bomb, but, it was still more entertaining than anything on SNL in at least 10 years. They used to have more talented cast members and take more risks. Both resulted in a better show.

This was such a genius bit. Very underrated. Having visited Germany a couple of different times in that era, I can vouch that the whole country was full of pseudo-intellectual techno-hipster Dieters. Sprockets would have played better to an audience more familiar with that scene in Germany. It was dead on. "YOUR HAIR IS GROTESQUE! WHICH GYMNASIUM SO YOU GO TO?!?" it was hilarious.

I love Mike Myers! Does anybody remember his “Philip” (the “hyper hy-po”) sketch he did with Nicole Kidman?? Omg every time I see it I lose it 🤣😂🤣😂 probably one of his funniest skits imo!! Every episode has some skits that have nothing to do with politics, but every episode in it's history has included political satire. Remember Phil Hartman's portrayal of Ronald Reagan? Will Farrell playing George W? Chevy Chase playing Gerald Ford? Dana Carvey as Bush Senior? Darrell Hammond as Bill Clinton? Dan Ackroyd as Jimmy Carter? For decades, SNL has roasted whomever is president, no matter which party. It didn't bother you until you joined a cult and they made fun of your dear leader. Trump is the butt of jokes because he makes it so easy with his weird behavior. The truth is often funnier than anything they could write, such as the recent "Four Seasons" presser.

Please post more Sprockets. I'm looking for the sketch where he is interviewing dancers at a nightclub and the name of one of the bands that are playing is "The Obelisks". I think it had something to do with Spring Break in Germany. There was also a song called "Weird Nun".
