i spilled a bunch of chicken feed at some point when i was a kid and remember being upset for being wasteful and clumsy. A couple years later that spot was growing a 2ft tall, unthinned, super dense variety of plants that somehow survived despite total neglect. i like your reverse-tractor method of containing and rotating access to the plants rather than containing the birds.

I adore how simple and easy this system is, you are simply working with nature for everyone’s benefit

Thankful for this common sense approach, I ordered bags of whole wheat, oat and rye from amazon but was a little intimidated by the sprouting articles telling me to rinse and baby the sprouts. This will work out much better and I will start today!

Love the flexibility you give yourself to experiment and be creative with your feed approach. I’ve wondered if I could just “plant” my sprouted grains for the chickens. Glad to see it works! Ill be doing that from now on!

I know this is an older video but Iove your smart approach to feeding chickens. I went all whole grains for my birds two years ago. Then I learned that sprouted grains increase 30% in protein so I added the sprouting. Now I will try this burying and hiding technique! And the birds are such a fan of finding treasure under a moved bucket!

While northerners can’t employ this year round (makes me want to return to my home state), I do sprout every day without rinsing and rinsing. A sunny window, some seeds, a tray and a spray bottle is all it takes. Plus, I like the idea of soaking one night and spreading their feed seed. I’m going to do that with my scratch mix which is just for them to keep busy in the cold months.

Very interesting. We haven't tried germinating our grain. We have just been moving our chicken into different areas. We'll have to give it a try.

What a great idea. Good chicken feed is quite expensive, and our birds have not been laying over the last few months, apart from the odd one. It is our winter in NZ, but we were told that these chickens generally lay all year. They are so fussy when given greens like spinach or other kitchen veggie scraps, but they love the treat of sweet corn mixed with leftover rice.

We have been ‘half-a$$ing’ your system and I’m loving what I see so far! Can’t wait to keep implementing and experimenting as our kids grow up and can help! Trying to build a cattle panel plastic house like yours for winter composting here in MN, but we are running out of warm weather and time!

I fed my chickens grain sprouted for 7 days. I mixed 2 parts wheat, one-part oats, one of corn & if it is cold, one of barley. I put the estimated daily amount of mixed feed in each of seven 20L pails with water drainage holes drilled in the bottom. The grain was watered twice a day. The chickens were fed the grain that had sprouted for 7 days. In hot climate maybe 4 days is enough. I overfed so some grain grew in the pen for continual greens. The egg yolks were very dark orange, nearly red. The taste was delicious, almost sweet. The eggs were in high demand. The chickens loved the feed.

This method is great for the spring and summer months, but if you live in a climate that gets colder in the winter, you must be able to sprout indoors. This is why I am making a fodder system, then will move it inside in the winter. But your method is very easy and very little stress.

Another brilliant idea. One I will be implementing! I’ve done tray sprouts. Fermented feed. All too time consuming. I only feed organic whole grain, and scraps. Unfortunately, I have not found a good source to save money. So I need to find a way to supplement their feed. My plan is, to take all the ground I do not officially garden, I will be “cover cropping,” with a bag of their scratch whole grain feed. And whatever I get, is bonus! Every little bit helps. They do give beautiful eggs! Orange yolks, almost like golf balls! One more thing. Your method makes for happychickens. They love looking for food.
