In this video we explore Spurn Point and the Military Structures that date back to World War One. This Military fort was in use until 1958. The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust purchased the entire site in 1988 and have been restoring it ever since. Spurn is a narrow sand tidal island located off the tip of the coast of the East Riding of Yorkshire, England that reaches into the North Sea and forms the north bank of the mouth of the Humber Estuary.

So interesting Andy & Dave, i never knew Spurn Point had a railway! WOW its looks freezing & the wind makes it very atmospheric i love Daves wartime info! Loved this video. ❤😊👍

It sure did. The railway was originally wind powered and then later steam. I believe there may have been a diesel locomotive there for a short while towards the end in the 1960’s

The railway was built during WW1 when the batteries were built and was the only land link to the point until the concrete road was built in WW2. There were even a couple of tiny wagons fitted with sails, used after hours, apparently 40mph was possible. The line was scrapped around 1950. Just before the lighthouse you can see the foundations of the engine shed.

Closish to the 2008/10 time still fully active RNLI housing, dual jetties, there were old ammo stores, concrete with heavily rusted slab doors on t'end, very similar to those as can be found on High Edge Raceway track above Buxton. (it being an ammo storage facility during WW2 /RAF camp).

VTS - Vessel Tracking Something. The Unimog trip was worthwhile when I went with the children, the guide adds a bit of nature talk too. Fog meant zero view from the lighthouse :-(.Looking forward to part 2!

Another great video, been a few years since I’ve looked around spurn. There’s another tunnel next to the GC tower/vts humber that I started to dig out a few years ago. It was heavily overgrown I’m not sure if you spotted it or not cheers

@@ALWResearchTeam well as you go down the point at the "end" on the left hand side of the road if still there There is a huge round construction rather like a lighthouse base. The outer circle contained rooms. Kitchens, dormitories washing facilities and communal areas. These all led out onto a circular "yard " . I spent time there and it was great in the late 60s. It was Hull Hull University's field centre but was clearly built not for them but as some live in fortifications for defence during the war. I went down there 10 - 25 years ago and found it abandoned the university had clearly let it go and it was full of sand and the central court was the only recognisable remain that could be seen. Hope you find something .Happy days staying there in late summer 60s or 70s.

If they are available, may I suggest that you obtain plans of the fort before you physically visit it and show them in your video, linking them to your commentary. As a result both you and your visitors would be better informed
