Yep. I put Pop above Phil because he was able to do more with less.

Some of it is self-caused. The first thing he states in this speech is that he doesn't want "me first" guys in any of his teams, and as most "superstars" are just iike that, he doesn't want them. Is not as if he couldn't have had more "superstars" in his team - is that he never aimed for it, because he didn't want them in the first place. Besides that, I can't give less of a damn about the rings they actually won. It's 5, but I don't care had they been 3, 1, or 7, because that's not what's great about Popovich and the Spurs. Their biggest achievement is not those 5 rings. Is that every.single.season. for the last 2 decades they've been a serious, believable, contender to the ring. With better and worse team quality, with bigger or lower prospects, but they've always been up there. Sure, not always winning, but always up there, always feared, always respected. in fact some of those years one could hardly believe what kind of game the Spurs were putting up with the players they had on paper. THAT'S the legendary part about this team and that coach, not the rings. Think of it, it's been 20 years now where that organization has, year after year, put up a team that was a serious match for anyone. Then of course they would succeed or not, but for the last 20 years NOONE has been able to take a W vs the Spurs for granted, while every other organization has had those "we need to rebuild" years where they intentionally tank, and in which at times it looks like a circus. No other team has achieved that, that I can think of. And certainly I can't even imagine Pop coaching in an organization that intentionally tanks. He's all about working hard and winning.

The only other competitor I can think of for GOAT coaches is Red Auerbach: 9 rings, innovative play style, strong player development, etc.

+Antbeast23 because they didn't grow up watching ESPN just as much American players did? we all see the highlight from a certain player only when's it's on the stats(points, blocks, steals, etc), but that player might shoot 5-23 and 10 out of the 18 misses are dumb shots. the motivation is just too different imo, some foreign players might be happy just to be in the NBA, while American players are the "go get em cheque"

As far as motivation that may be true since most players is to get in the NBA. Espn only shows highlights plays which I hate also. I haven't really watch espn for awhile now.
