The Medic disguise is without a doubt op! You disguise as Medic, run up to a dying "Teammate" and use the "No!" Voice Command. The enemy Team wont notice a thing is different

I disagree with medic disguise in casual. Yeah it takes about 1 second for them to realize you're a spy, but medic is the only class that actively walks to teammates and looks them dead in the eyes, which is a bad habit a lot of spy players do to get themselves revealed. Yes it takes them a second for them to realize you're not healing them but either they just focus on their priorities and expect you to heal them while they do that, like a good medic should, or they stare at you, probably with low health asking for heals and remember, "SPY HAS A GUN!" That one second is like getting a free first turn. Medic is only sus when he's not doing his job.... His job is right being next to you, and last I checked, backstabs take less than that time.

Disguising yourself as a friendly Hoovy is the most big brain play a Spy can do

The friendly engineer disguise is so good for throwing off enemies in their backlines, especially if you cloak around corners, you can make them waste so much time.

I used to use friendly disguises with the dead ringer to slip past frontlines. People always assumed that a spy that just falls over DR'd. But an enemy pyro that runs straight at you and flops over dead is a bit less suspicious. It also had the added benefit that you could sometimes catch enemies off guard because they think they're safely outside of flamethrower range when they're inside of gun range.

One thing you can do to make Medic work a bit more as a mindgame is if the enemy medic is using the crossbow (because why wouldn't he) you can have a very brief window with that disguise if you're doing a reload on your revolver and feigning like you're shooting an arrow. Very niche circumstance, but hey, sometimes 'so bad nobody would ever do this' works, just like with Heavy.

The less hp the enemy players around you have, the more believable your medic disguise is. Simply because they want to believe they're about to get healed. Enemy under 102hp? Call medic to get his attention, and as soon as he looks at you - switch your disguise weapon to the crusader's and he will stand still for the "arrow". That and it allows you to eyeball a player while running directly at him, no other disguise will allow you to be so blatant. You can also bait enemy soldiers (in pubs anyway) into getting near you by pulling out your melee, and pretending you see a spy who just so conveniently happens to be around the corner and out of sight of the soldier. A lot of the times they will jump over or around you to "help" you. But yes, extremely situational and likely won't work more than once or twice in a game.

Heavy disguise is very underrated because you can call for med to get free heal

People say that disguises are useless and they don't fool experienced players But i think that on high level they are not ment to fool someone you are on their team, they are more so to give you that small amount of time that it takes someone to realize you are a spy

A great way to use friendly disguise is to use friendly sniper or medic disguise while using the dead ringer. You can disguise as a friendly medic and fake your medic's death to make the enemy team think that they dropped your medic, when in reality they didn't. That will also throw off the enemy medic's uber percentage count. By using friendly sniper disguise in the distance you can scare the enemies off or / and make the enemy sniper busy for a while by pretending to be the sniper of your team. If you are distracting the enemy sniper, you can use dead ringer so when he the enemy sniper quickscopes you, he and his team will think that your sniper is killed, which will make the job of your actual sniper MUCH easier for a while.

In casual I pretty much only disguise as a Spy or A Medic so that I can get a fast walking speed. I mostly rely on my cloak and I use the disguise as a tool to avoid sentry fire. I honestly don’t trust the disguise kit because it’s kind of glitchy and sometimes unreliable (how many times have you been disguised as a demo with invisible feet?) In terms of friendly disguises, I sometimes become a friendly medic with the dead ringer, so that the enemy team will think that they got a medic pick. It s a decent strat on Dustbowl.

I wonder if there's any big brain plays you could do by Disguising as your own team while using the dead ringer.

A good thing to learn as a spy is when to react to getting shot. A bad habit of a lot of them is when they get clipped by a shot, they inmediatly cloak, but if you get shot in the back don't stop or turn around, when friendly fire happens you don't have the getting shot feedback so act as it didn't happen, and usually you will survive 1 to 2 shots if anything and usually you are most likely already dead even if you cloak so take it as far as you can. Or if someone turns around to spy check you, you can turn around to also spy check your back (queue garfield drawing "Huh, I wonder who that is for"). It is dumb but it works.

My god… you play Stock _and_ know how to use the disguise kit? I think I love you. On a more serious note, seeing a Spy player not use the Kunai + DR combo to bruteforce their way into enemy backlines and go for trickstabs 95% of the time is such a nice breath of fresh air!

I’d argue that Demo deserves the spot he got, because of how buggy the disguise can be. You’re more likely to have missing feet on a Demo disguise than other classes, making it so you’re sometimes just gonna get called out immediately and you won’t know. This happens sometimes with Pyro’s head, too, but it’s much less frequent.

Btw the Friendly medic disguise is very good for baiting scouts/roamer soldiers into diving you instead of the actual medic. Friendly disguises have their uses, particularly when pushing the cart, or hiding from spawn wallhacks.

I have to wonder if there’s an actual strategy with disguising as a friendly sniper in a comp game, so that way the enemy team thinks there’s a sniper there and tries to avoid the sightline, only to walk into the actual sniper sightline and die lmao.

something id like to mention about spy disguise. It can be very useful to use spy disguise instead of scout disguise when the enemy’s count has a bunch of unusuals. When like 20 million bright unusual effects pop out of nowhere it’s very noticeable. When you disguise as a spy you look like a spy with his little mask on and therefore no particle effects can alert enemies of your position. Another note, medic imo is the best disguise FOR CASUAL (it lowkey sucks for comp) the movement speed and the fact that pubbers consistently turn their back to medic makes it really effective. Another thing you can do with it is take health packs. When you are disguised as medic, no matter your health or your disguises health you can grab health packs. Can be useful for sabotaging enemy team. Great list tho

FINALLY a good disguise video! I've seen my fair share of disguise vids and none of them explained each and every class as concisely as you did and I got to learn a lot of new stuff from this! The scout disguise actually got popular because of a Mr.Paladin video which he describes the benefits of it. It used to never be use before his videos. Also medic is a very good disguise

Even though it really isn't the main topic of this video this would be my first time getting a chance to get someone reliable to answer this question: How are friendly disguises useful? Wouldn't the enemy just shoot at you anyway? great video cyber!! with my two second place medals in main (lol) i've picked up on a lot for disguise usage and you do a great job at putting that intuition into actual words about why each class can be good or bad. Two things that I think are worth noting: -Switching weapons for your disguise is very helpful for selling the disguise. If you want to go the extra mile you can disable auto-reload too; I had a ton of fun reloading using disguises, it messes people up so badly. -It's very important to keep track of what classes have recently died, and using them as a reference for what you want to disguise as. This is especially applicable for Highlander since there's only one of each class, and it provides an excuse for someone being out of position.

imo engie is just the best disguise here, like it's perfect in all sides, it's easly ignored, it's supossed to be near sentries and team mates in general, and since it doesn't need to shoot too much you don't have to worry about mimic, just about changing your disguise weapon to the wrench

i have a bund that im still trying to get used to to undisguise (or switch to friendly scout) i dont play comp but the heavy disguise might work better if you can learn the muscle memory to undisguise using the bind and going for the pick, its silent and it doesnt require any cooldown while giving you an immediete "speed boost" to more reliavly get the pick you want not sure how it would play out but just a neat idea id throw out there

the medic could work if the disguise has the crossbow out. it trick the enemy into thinking the medic is just missing his shots also using it with the reload will help sell it as well.

I love to mask the uncloak sound by hitting voice lines, especially as sniper the "activate charge" line is really loud and masks any sound often.

Interesting tier list! I don't think I've ever disguised as Engineer in my life, I'll have to give that a shot

I mostly use pyro or demo because doesnt change the movement speed much and is believable (I play casual)

I haven't really used the engi disguise for so long since I never really got good results using it to roam the backlines, and the soldier one is still much too slow for my liking unless you aggressively uncloak behind the enemy frontlines and blend in. The demoman disguise is also pretty much a gamble on whether you get a stock demo or a demoknight, so it's too much jank to bother trying despite the more workable run speed. I have been getting great mileage out of the sniper disguise when using the stock watch though, mostly as a way to wait as inconspicuously as possible (thanks spawnhacks) while I wait for my watch to recharge and/or get a free ammo pack from a nearby back/head, and the scout one is pretty much superior on C&D.

I sometimes disguise as a friendly medic just to trick up the other teams positioning either thinking there is a flank push building or just to take heat from our actual medic. Heck sometimes it is fun to have them think they have the medic cornered and it will be an easy kill only to get trickstabbed.

In competitive environments specifically, I think every disguise is as good as the others if used correctly. When I played Highlander, I’d always disguise as whatever class was dead. It can work very well for a quick stab in the heat of the moment where people won’t realize that specific teammate is dead.

as a low spy player in hl this could help a lot cuz usually i just have perma scout disguise cuz i think that the wont fall for it but this gives some good tips on it and low in etf2l is same as amateur in rgl thanks for the tips man might use solly engi demo and sniper more in hl matches

I don't know why, but with Demo I feel like no one attacks me as spy. Very consistently. They just assume the scottish cyclops is a scottish cyclops. He always works for me, though I will admit I don't play comp, and in casual there's a good amount more demos.

Friendly disguises can be occasionally useful. During setup you can mask that you have a spy by disguising as a friendly, and you can deter enemy spies from an area by disguising as a friendly pyro.

One thing you can use a friendly disguise for, if you disguise as a friendly medic and intentionally die, if the opposing team isn't paying attention they'll think they got a med pick and likley end up pushing. Works well with the dead ringer

Well, as someone who doesn't play spy, this is handy to know what to most often look for!

Fun side note, Reloading your revolver while in disguise will play the reload animation of your respective disguise. This is especially visible on Soldier, i have done this in a Soldier disguise a few times to convince my enemies i had just fired a Rocket and i was reloading it.

this was a fun video! cool to hear different applications for different disguises, especially as someone who doesn't play a lot of spy and isn't particularly good at them either aklnlfdd. kind of funny to me how most of the disguises i end up using are actually some of the worser ones, partly for weird reasons that thinking about now are kinda strange (medic/spy for barely faster walk speed, pyro/medic just to 'blend in' more). hopefully some experimention should make it more fun whenever i get the chance to play spy more. awesome work!

I noticed this in a game recently but i saw an enemy scout spy crouch jumping to imitate double jumps. Obviously it doesn't pass the sniff test when you're really paying attention but i think if you use it sparingly you can make fast moves like turning corners and backpedaling into the enemy look more convincing and score yourself a second or two of hesitation. (In pubs obv)

The best disguise you can do is disguising as the class select screen and picking something other than Spy.

Heavy, pyro and demo are very good disguises for running towards the enemy frontlines like crossing that bridge at 2fort, as long as you have your dead ringer pulled out. Because there is a 50 percent chance that the enemy teammates walking towards you can recognise your disguise. There is something about the fat and large sized character models that make people drop their guard when they are looking at you, compared to scouts, snipers or spies. Moreover, these are frontline fighters so it is not surprising to see them running back from enemy territory to get health. Of course, if the 50 percent chance of them recognising you kicks in, your dead ringer will allow you to run safely into the depths of enemy territory so you can redisguise as sniper, engineer or scout. I have a rule on what to do when I am running into enemy players with a disguise on. How are they reacting towards me? If they are acting suspicious towards me, I will immediately start pulling out revolver and become a battle spy. If they are inexperienced or less wary players, then I can do my usual backstab trick. Being able to switch between powerful disguise and invisible cloak is the key aspect to make your spy as clandestine as possible.

Disagree about Soldier. In HL, a Soldier should never be seen waddling, especially on low ground. They're either standing still on an ammo/health pack reloading, rocket jumping, or are on high ground. Combined with the awful move speed, makes it the worst disguise in my opinion. You have to supplement it with reload tech to even have a chance to make it convincing in my eyes. Very accurate about the Pyro disguise, it's always worked best for baiting the medic as soon as he respawns. Sniper is absolutely solid. It's the best disguise for getting a full buff from the enemy med hah.

I’d say its worth mentioning how bugged demo’s disguise is. There is a fair chance that the legs won’t load in on your disguise if the demo has the boots equipped and sometimes the green eyelander eye particle appears even on non demo knights. These things are dead giveaways that you are a spy, but even so I think that demo is still a pretty good disguise, even more so in casual

Keep in mind, not a competitive player, but Spy is my most used class right now. I had an opinion on one of the disguises I feel like wasn't touched on too much, enemy Spy. I know. Although I do agree it's a bad disguise for fooling players when going for a play, it's actually not a bad disguise for roaming. Especially with the Cloak and Dagger. Since you have to uncloak to grab ammo packs anyway, with C&D, you could use the enemy Spy to uncloak in plain sight to grab packs. Ideally you do this unseen in the first place, but if anyone were to see a class uncloak, the most natural would be Spy. Although this also could be more of a noobish thing, since I'd assume a more experienced Spy would actually manage thier cloaks well, but sometimes I just run out of cloak. Idk, just an opinion I had. I tend to experiment with all the disguises a lot but I'm also casual, and casual tryhards are not competitive players by a long shot. So the people I fool could be fooled by anyone not using a Scout disguise.

I use the medic disguise so often. Out of all the players you can run into where you are specifically disguised as that player, against medic you have the best 1v1 potential. A lot of players also face a medic and immediately turn away to go into battle thinking they're about to get healed.

About Spy, a large problem is that it reminds the enemy that spies (as a class) exist. This makes it more likely that they'll suddenly start checking.

Ok so for friendly disguises there was this one time i was playing on upward on blu i saw a red engineer near our spawn (figured he was gonna try to set a teleporter or sum behind us) went to chase after an didnt see anyone even tho i know for sure i saw somone, turns out the spy simply distracted me as i saw backstabs in the feed. The fact rarely anyone uses friendly disguises means i legit looked for a engineer that was a spy whome snuck by me to get to my team mates also effectively putting them down a person, wether it was intended or not, it worked

Sniper can actually be in the frontlines if the sniper you disguise as is using the huntsman, which is a much more close quarters focused weapon.

I usually use the more mobile classes to get around faster. The only exception is if I backstab a slower class so now I usually disguise as them in order to not raise suspicion.

I agree with most of them, but I would move the demoman and the pyro much lower due to the fact that during disguise as pyro, you'll often be missing his head, when the player you are disguised as uses the head cosmetic, in the case of the demoman it is similar except that the legs are missing when he has equipped bootleggers or ali baba's wee booties (which makes them pretty obvious to spot).

The thing I like about Spy disguise and why many other people use it, is probably because if we cloak in front of an enemy they might not question it that much, since spy can Cloak.

Enemy sniper disguise is very up there. Not a lot of people will have the dedication of looking if their sniper is scoping or not. Especially when crouched.

However medic is op when the enemy team is distracted, as they normally will need a medic during a large fight and will be less likely to notice your strange behavior. This works particularly well with chainstabs, as normally enemies when distracted will think your healing their teammates. However it isn't as good for less distracted enemies, as they are more likely to notice your behavior. As for spy I find that it is very bad if the enemy team isn't distracted, as I have noticed that it tends to put their mind on spies and be more likely to spycheck you.

I always classed Pyro as a good disguise due to the fact that his weapon is so close range, it can excuse why you maybe aren't shooting at distant 'enemies'.

In casual demopans, bison trolldiers, huntsman snipers, pretty much any meme class works well. Once I surfed a rocket while disguised as a soldier with market gardener and got a backstab out of it lmao.

Sniper disguise is goated, just spin around like a madman and the enemy team will think that their sniper is a bot and kick him.

Best disguise is an allied heavy. Swap to the sandvich and crouch. The enemy walks right up to you, it's great

I love using Engi disguise in pubs because: 1) So many engineers in pubs look clueless and you can mimic that easily and 2) It allows you to get close to their buildings without suspicion

My favorite is the schizophrenia disguise, where you stay invisible with the C&D and just spam voice lines from behind people.

Personally I use Engi, Medic, Sniper, and friendly hoovy as a disguise. Tricking the enemy team into thinking you're an innocent hoovy only to backstab them and run away is hilarious, and the Engi, Sniper and Medic are usually seen at back lines or not in direct fire, so sneaking back and uncloaking makes it easier to not get shot at.

Medic is a good disguise. No one will notice if you know what good positioning is, just go in during a fight and everyone just hands you their back on a silver platter. It's like the sniper without the movement speed penalty, but you are also supposed to be seen in the middle of a fight. You aren't supposed to be a convincing medic, you are supposed to be an invisible medic. If someone noticed you, either you got unlucky or you should position better.

I like to disguise as a friendly heavy and go melee, that way I can pretend to be a hoovy, get my kills and doom any other hoovies that may appear

Actually, scout is horrible cause if you use it u'll be spy's speed , wich is 107%, while the scout is 133%, and you can't double jump, wich is something scout do every second of their life, except if they have the BFB, but noone uses it

Demo should be in his own "Absolutely never use" tier purely because of how bugged his disguise is. It seems like every time a spy disguises as Demoman he either doesn't have feet, is holding a mini-gun, or has a shield and a sticky bomb launcher.

Sniper with his Primary, Engie with his wrench, and Spy with his knife are basically the three go-to disguises for me. Also make sure you enable the concise disguise menu in the advanced options.

The sniper disguises are super good in pubs and in maps like 2fort and Hightower where there’s a sniper in every inch of your asshole and most of those spots are right outside of spawn so it’s easy to get a medic or demo pick. Just make sure you know how to position and fake yourself as a sniper since it can be very rewarding.
