Well, I worked for Probe Software Ltd, which was a very special game company in London. The CEO, a good friend of mine, had very good contacts with the whole industry. He even took the liberty to learn some basic Japanese to secure the deals. Very interesting times! :-)

That's exactly why the music is so amazing. They were limited so they had to make the best of it. Nowadays, they have so many options, so they get lazy and go half assed for the most part.

It was fully developed as a licensed Terminator game. But that fell through so they just changed it a little. The final boss still looks like a terminator skeleton.

one of many true gem nes game like kage - shadow of the ninja. thoses game sci-fi and up ahead like that is too much with that time so it not be recogized much at the time and so on it keep being a hidden gem... like Ergo Proxy or Akira as well...

It's very sad that video game composers never got the recognition they deserved. Even today there are awesome composers like Jeremy Soule, Gareth Coker and Michael McCann who are only known by a portion of the gaming community.

I have to day I have seen so many favorites lists for NES tracks and I'm not trying to knock them down but they were no where even close and some were obvious choices that did not belong on their lists. Here's part of what is so amazing about the Journey to Silius Soundtrack. The NES sound chip is only natively capable of producing 3 notes at the same time. That's exactly enough notes to produce one cord on a single instrument. Yet thanks to some pretty advanced coding, the composers and programmers for the soundtrack were able to get a melody, counter-melody, drums, cymbals, and bass all emulated and playing together at the same time on the NES sound chip.

NES had three note channels (lead, harmony, bass), plus one for noise (drums), and another for samples. All the audio dept. did at Sunsoft was record bass samples to use in that channel, and use the original "bass channel" for a cymbal sound. Ingenious, and really well produced, but nothing the NES couldn't do on it's own :) Check out Mr. Gimmick and Lagrange Point. Those had special chips with extra channels on them.

@@SpiralPegasus The triangle channel is used for more than just cymbals, but it's all in the general bucket of augmenting the percussion, giving the drum kit that physical "unts" that lacks in games that only use the noise channel. Of course, that left Naoki Kodaka with just the two pulse channels to do both the lead and rhythm guitars, but the trick they went with is that harmony is always a power chord including a melody note. And because there is no difference between the two pulse channels, by using both cleverly with different vibrato and envelopes, you can get a sound of two guitars in there. If you listen to basically any channel in isolation, it sounds pretty terrible, but when you put it all together, well, you heard the result.

@@MadDeepness I think that music by Mr. Tel are just one of the best game music from the 8bit era! Ill be never placed his great soundtracks below the OSTs from the Japan. I think this is just different worlds but both placed to the top place! I very like incredibly beautiful music by many-many Japanese composers but me also very like the number of the masters of the 8bit/16bit sound chips from the West and Mr. Tel one of them!

The Famicom could support additional sound chips in the cartridge. So, what you're hearing is an extra voice or two playing along with the stock audio of the console.

Some of the 8-bit graphics almost looks as good as 16-bit. The better looking games usually has the better sound track.

Journey to Silius blows my mind. Talk about taking the nes music to the next level. Sunsoft were just amazing at creating great music for the nes. Btw I'm not talking about this through nostalgic reasons! I've never *played* the game. Didn't even know it existed until half a year ago when I saw someone play it.

I love that melody, but it's not really original to the game; it's a reworking on an existing tune. I'm only a few tunes into the video so I don't know if they include any reworkings in here.

So happy that you end the list with one of my favorite nes song of all time. Power Blade is such an underrated game, but I played it so many time when I was a kid. Now I'm doing Metal cover for fun, this song was one my mind for quite a while now. I really need to try it see if I can make it work ! Thanks for the amazing list, even if I still know by heart half of the song xD

There was a song I couldn't get out of my head and I couldn't remember what it was so I had to listen to all of these again lol. Castlevania II's soundtrack deserved SUCH a better game to be a part of. It was nice to hear Bloody Tears in the Netflix version.

Great list! Your lead off song is my #1. I'd say all 30 of these are in at least my top 50 with the exception of the TMNT 3 song. As big of a TMNT fan as I am, I don't care for that one. There are one or two tracks where I might have chose a different song from that game, but since these lists are so subjective I won't argue with any of your selections. And whoever is playing all these games on the video is pretty amazing. Makes me realize I was never very good at most of these games. Thanks for the vid! It lets me get all nostalgic without having to waste my day dying a lot! 🎶😁

What's really impressive is loading up some adlib tracker software on an old Amiga and seeing how this sort of stuff was done. Inputting values for every single note, for how long, etc. This stuff is truly spectacular, even from a technical standpoint.

destructurhead sixtonine power blade 1 and 2 how i love this games. i still have them, lots of fun and great sountracks no doubt. this ones and shaterhand, jetman are great adventures.

Crystalis was in general just a fantastic game though. I wish someone would buy the rights already and release a reboot of the original so we can all forget about that shit game boy color port they made.
