Different steels for different uses; ZDP holds an edge better, but m390 is much more corrosion resistant, and likely tougher as well given carbide volume.

Hey amigo, I really enjoy your videos and all you do for the knife community. Been a fan for a while now. If I could, may I make a suggestion? When you go over the testing results, can you say them together (ex: Knife A did xxx cuts, knife B did xxx cuts). The way you do it now- you reveal what a knife did then talk for a while about the knife, sharpening, experience, etc. By the time you get to the 2nd knife I can’t remember what the first knife’s numbers were and have to rewind the video and try to find it, or scramble to get a pen & paper to try and write it down. Just thought I’d throw it out there. Keep up the great work dude!

Great test! I'll confess that I prefer M390 for EDC. In my experience ZDP just chips too easily. Edge retention is outstanding but it's too fragile for me. M390 doesn't hold an edge as long but it's a lot tougher, again in my experience and based on a few different samples I've used and sharpened. I am hoping to nab a Delica in K390 when the sprint run 'drops'.

I wanted to try out zdp on an endela model but Kurt sent me a zdp endura as a gift. The stretch and the endela weren't given the k390 treatment which is upsetting for me atleast. M390 is the biggest gamble on production steel based on varied performance from manufacturers. Refreshing to see M390 perform at this level.

Still my absolute favorite steel for folders and small fixed blade knives, is M390. It's the only steel, that I never had a single issue. Sharpens fast and easy, holds it's edge really long and it is true stainless steel. I can't remember a steel, that can do all these. All of them, lack something. Also M390s edge, is sharp like no other stainless I have tried and it's carbides cut like crazy!

@@ringbadingbingrading1181 spyderco, Reate, twosun and knives heat treated by Peter's heat treatment in m390 /20cv is good. A few others to name but not many. These are all around 60hrc and outperform those that are at 61hrc from other manufacturers. It's all in the profile of how the heat treatment is done. Spyderco does have some in the 62hrc range. @@ringbadingbingrading1181 sorry I ment spyderco USA. Spyderco Taiwan or spyderco Japan may have a bit lower performance. You'll have to see if outpost76 did some cut tests on them. I'm guessing that they may burn the edge on them sharpening them and may need to sharpen a bit more to get past the burnt edge. But regardless you should have something acceptable.

I LOVE my Endura in ZDP! Incredible steel and yet still very very affordable compared to some of the other steels. I picked mine up with the British racing green FRN scales for only $104. That’s crazy cheap for that level of knife and steel. It’s the first blade I’ve ever had in ZDP.

@cfltitan I love the belly on the chef sooo much. It's so cool 😎 I just can't pay more than like 160 for a knife. So smock, shaman, yojimbo and sage are no go's for me cuz of price. But I'd love to have them. Especially in m4. I love the m4 sprint runs on blade hq. They still have black blade delica mint green scales and the endura satin blade m4 steel with mint green scales. 👌 I got both. My other endura is in zdp189 so I can't wait to see them side by side. They were $99.99 when I got my zdp189 now they are 114 because they are discontinued. Plus i like a basic lock back system. I font like the pm2 lock much. I sliced my finger on my spy 27 manix 2 lighweight. I was dripping from closing the blade. And it knicked my finger 😆 it's razor sharp. Now the native in magnacut I think I'm going to hit with the 600 grit stone and strop it I need a 800 grit 💎 stone. But 600 the best I can find atm. It does the Job. 👍

Nice test Gerald. Exemplifies why zdp is such a great choice in the Endura platform. I'd be curious to see what going the other direction in edge finish would yield? High polish on zdp and a more corse finish on m390? Both steels have a lot of Chromium carbides but zdp gets its prowess primarily from hardness while M390 gets some edge retention benefit from 4% Vanadium. Just a thought. I wonder about 600 grit on the m390?
@Outpost_76

This is something I'll be adding soon. See how well polished does against coarse and with different finishing stones and strops. I have lots of 1500 grit data so I'm going to add 600, 4K, 8K and 12K to see where they end up.

From 2 Lionsteel M4 I have seen, (an older G10 version and a newer micarta version) they have changed their heat treatment. The difference isn't only noticable by using the knife, but also you can see a different colour, when sunlight hits the blade. The old blade, has a white glare and the new one, has a yellow-goldish glare! That being said, that's what I have seen on my samples, so I'm not 100% sure, they indeed changed their heat treatment, on all the newer made Lionsteel models.
