If I'm gonna pay top dollar for an overpriced knife, I'm certainly getting Benchmade because they have the superior material and build quality. Spyderco pumps out so much low cost product they could afford to substantially lower their retail prices. If you think BM suffers from "lack of innovation" remember the old adage, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Their axis lock is the best and the knife world is now better that other companies are free to copy it. How's that for innovation? BM fixed and folders are top notch. Best special operators in the world use BM.

Perfect explanation of the compression lock vs the liner lock, it's a brilliant and simple design. It would take an awful lot of force to compress that small section of spring steel between the ramp and stop pin. Even if it deforms, it'll still be between the ramp and stop pin.

I have 3 Spyderco Paramilitary 2s - but didn't really understand the compression lock until today. It is such a fantastic knife - great for EDC. Maybe one of the best pocketknives ever made.

Really. You could see how it works from the video. When mike is talking about the knife and showing how it works the camera man is focused on his face and not the knife.

@@arfrce72 Maybe it helps me a little that I have the knife in my hand and can look at what happens when I open and close it, but yeah - specifically the video between 1:45 and 2:30 makes it very clear to me what's happening with the compression lock. Though I get your point - they should show the knife cutaway only as they fully open and close it instead of switching the video to his face. If you have a specific question I'll answer it if I can..

Was excited about the compression lock until I bought a Canis and found the location of the lock can cause pinching under the forefinger when opening with hard one handed flick. This isn't an issue when opening any other way. Lock can be a bit of a hot spot depending on grip and use.

Just got my 1st Spiderco folder the Yojumbo that has the compression lock. I bought the knife after seeing another of Mr. Janich's video explaining the workings of the lock. I don't mind saying that I'm a huge fan of the triad lock but, I also "really liked" the purposeful design of the Yojumbo too and that lock, sold me on it. The Yojumbo is my 1st Spiderco knife, but it certainly won't be my last!!! Great video btw...

How does the lock work? Had a chance at 7:55 but, The video doesn’t show that because the camera man doesn’t show the knife in action. You need a close up of how the lock works in action the still shot doesn’t show how it works. Does the lock slide front and back? Or side to side?

My paramilitary 2s compression lock is trash. It’s so sticky, I’ve taken it apart cleaned it. Tried it dry, tried it with oil, spun the lock bar adjusted the screws a bunch of times. It stops sticking for a while, with a little oil. But always comes back, I really don’t understand why people like this lock so much. Maybe I just got a bad one.

I wish more people were privy to all this... especially that the compression lock is a Spyderco thing.... before while Benchmade had the rights to the axis lock its what stood them out from everyone else... as noone else could use it... now that the rights are over and everyone is allowed to use it Benchmade doesnt seem half as special.... theyre really actually very ordinary especially with their ridiculous prices... I wish the compression lock would be as widely known and as popular as the axis lock was back in the day... its certainly deserves it..

Thanks for addressing the Left Handed Compression Lock issue. I disagree, however, that the right handed compression lock is suitable for a left handed person. You're holding the Yojimbo, and even the scales are for a right handed person.

i recently tested the strength of this lock on my Para 3 by getting it stuck into some wood. Light up and down rocking to get it back out and it completely trashed the lock smashing the metal liner in between the stop pin and the tang and now it has a ton of lock rock. Also, 2 of my compression locks came with terrible lock stick. i've sold one of my shamans already and all my compression locks are going on ebay. Sad such beautiful knives with the coolest steels have such a weak designed lock. I'm keeping the manix 2s and native 5's i own, but all the compression locks are going. Please make a ball bearing or back lock shaman. i have tested many locks this way and liner locks fail just as bad or worse than the compression lock. The manix 2 ball lock, back locks, and benchmade axis locks have absolutely zero issues with this test. I mean a bugout can do it no problem. pretty sad.

To me, the locking mechanism like this is a modified lock back. Maybe to say it takes the good parts of a liner lock for one handed operation, and the strength of a lock back.

Occasionally, the knife can open, just like with a regular linerlock. That's why I only trust lockbacks.

I love the compression lock but what is the deal with the ridiculous lock stick on the Paramilitary 2??? I've bought and still own 3 of them and the two G10 knives have ridiculous lock stick to the point where the s45vn knife is borderline unusable.

I just bought the Military 2 online because I wanted the Military, but don't like liner locks or frame locks for the reasons mentioned in the video. The compression lock looks similar in strength to the Benchmade axis style lock, imo.

You bought a PARAmilitary 2 beacuse as far as I know Military 2 is not released yet and it will actually feature a compression lock among other upgrades size ergos etc...

I wish that there was a way for you to move the lock back into the handle a half inch or so, the lock cutout always falls under my thumb and then hurts when I need to actually use the knife. I know that most people buy them to collect and play with, but for actual use, the placement suuuuuuuuucks.

Wondering if perhaps he means the small letters, which if that's the case are the "makers mark" the initials of the creator of that blade. It's on higher end blades like the Manix, para etc.

My s30v shaman lock has failed several times. A small hit on the spine wil cause the lock to fail. Just sent it in to get warrantied, I am really hoping for a replacement. I do not trust that particular knife anymore

I'm getting mixed messages, and hopiong someone can lend support. I just bought my 2nd Spyderco - a standard Shaman in G10 and Stonewashed finish. there seem to be 2 stages to my lockup - one at about 5 degrees from fully open an audible click and lock (well, it's not locked because I can with just a slight bit of effot close the blade, then full lockout comes next... this does not appear to be normal, or something that was mentioned in this video as a "feature"... yet, when I hit reddit for insight, they all say that's normal... then why doesn't my PM2 do that? or any of these on the table? did I get a dud?

Fire the camera man. Terrible camera man. When he should be looking at the knife he has the camera on your face. You need to show how the lock catches and how it works. You missed all that because the camera man wants to show your faces. Sorry, thought this was a video for the knives.

Beats it how? If you mean for the price, in my experience you get what you pay for with knives. I've owned a lot over my 40+ years and more than 5 Spyderco knives. I've always been a fan because of the way they fit my hand and how easily the thumb hole allows for opening. I've had other knives that were more and less expensive and for the money I find Spyderco quality tends to match the price overall. As an EDC I carried a Spyderco Delica in the Army for years and put it through hell and it still never failed me. Price points under $60-80 for Spyderco are fine I think. Just my 2 cents

@@Ape76 I mean I'm not rich but I don't feel like 100$-150$ is hard to save for a good tool as useful as a solid knifeand got forbid a self defense tool if needed. delica is 60$-80$. Then you have the tenacious around 35$-60$. Dragon fly 2 70$-100$ and even a manix 2 lw for right at 100$ which is a absolutely great edc. Ive had some gonzos and for the price there decent I've had a few of there autos. Would rather pay 20$-50$ for a spyderco with way better steel,ergos and warranty. Then you have there budget line bird which makes affordable knifes. Spydercos grinds are much more sliceyer and cuts better than most others and I've owned/own zt, microtech, Benchmades and alot more. I'm not brand loyal person but spyderco is not hype. As far as the lower end price range in my opinion nothing out there is comparing to WE knives budget line civivi. They are making knives with bearing pivots, d2, skeletonized liners, perfect blade centering and just flawless fit and finish and smoother deployment then alot of higher end knives for 35$-80 $ and they absolutely blow gonzo out of the water! I also think you have developed a opinion on spyderco and don't have alot of personal experience with them if you compare them to a gonzo...
