After a while of owning these Diamond Rod's by Spyderco I was reminded by Nathan ThenNinja Taylor that I haven't done a follow-up video on them. In this video I do a minor reprofile of the edge of my Spyderco UKPK Titanium and talk about what I think of these Rod's.

Just wanted to say thank you for this video. I had to suffer through a lot of garbage to find someone who actually knew what they were talking about and could demonstrate appropriately. I bought a pair of these diamond stones for my sharpmaker because of you. I also am going to change my technique to downstroke/upstroke because of you. Thank you sir.

Thank you man its much appreciated. Between this system and freehand sharpening and the lansky system think I'm set for keeping my knives hair popping sharp. Thanks for watching.

I like my diamond stones so far. They were expensive but at the same time, they work as advertised and I haven't messed them up yet, so thumbs up from me!

Great advice because I think a lot of people don't understand the difference between the ceramic rods or stones if your sharpening on flat stones and how much more aggressive the diamond stones are!

You should go to the flats and push down when coming to the tip so you don't have to pull off and risk rounding the edge. Just a thought. Great video, thanks

I'm sure that you've already gone through multiple sharpening systems since this video but I recommend the worksharp precision adjust and then for fine tuning I use the edge-pro tapes stuck right onto the ceramic hone and I'm able to get insane edges on most any steel also I love the ukpk I have the s110v, the lc200n an n690, one s30v and two of the bd1n versions one in each shape...

Makes no sense to ignore the safety rods in my opinion. But the up and down technique is what I use. As for re-profile work, I use Lansky and my Spyderco to keep the edge pristine.

Spyderco has 2 "diamond" type stones; one is actual diamond and the other one is cbn. Both aren't really good with pressure, but cbn will leave much less deep scratches but cuts as fast The sharpmaker is a great system, just takes super long to reprofile That Ti ukpk looks so sweet

+Sea Also, a much cheaper and (imo better to be honest) version of the edge pro is the hapstone pro, at 200 dollars you can get a comprehensive set with all the stones you need to get a mirror edge etc.. hapstone.pro/

Cubic Boron Nitrate. Haven't seen them yet for sale any where in Canada. Definitely need something better to reprofile with but it does work , just so very slow.

I need a sharpener but there so many types and I'm just confused which one to buy. Since this videos which is obviously 7 years ago, what types of sharpeners have you tried and which one would you recommend? Also is this Diamond rods more coarse than Spyderco's Boron Nitride ?

I can't agree more. This is not the "knife superstore" $19.95 ceramic rod 'crock stick' sharpener. This is the real deal. There is no way this should work as well as it does. I have a KME and it will probably stay in the box from now on. For the price and the effort and the result, you can't beat this.

I am having a problem with re profiling a knife. When do you know to re-profile your blade. I have a spiderco sharpmaker with the extra fine rods. Most of my knifes i can get sharp using the 40 degree side. Is reprofilng using the 30 degree side starting with the medium, fine, and extra fine rods 20 to 25 strokes and then doing the same thing with the 40 degree side.? Should you do that every time you sharpen your knife? Very confusing! I have a harnds viper knife I bought, and i cannot get it sharp! I tried the 30 degree side with every rod; medium, then fine and then extra fine 20 to 25 strokes. Then i followed it up with the same thing with the 40 degree side and it wont even cut paper! What am i doing wrong! Any help would be appreciated. I do not understand when and then how to get them sharp.

Hey great vid. Been wondering if i should get these and maybe you could help. I have a para2 with a seriously lopsided grind. I sent it off to a pretty well known wetstone sharpner recommended from blade forum asking to even out the bevels and to give me that 30 degree single bevel and he accomplished neither. I've had now 3 people attempt to sharpen this damn knife and nobody can do it right. it comes back sharp but the bevel is still uneven and still so shallow the sharpmaker hits the shoulder on one side even at the other angle on it so i would probably need to remove quite a bit of material if i get these diamond rods. Do you think these things are up to the task with that major of a reprofiling? Also i have a s30v native 2 that's half spyder edge with a chisel grind, so it's flat on one side and the bevel is only on the other. Any advice for sharpening a knife like this?

One question I have - when sharpening an s90v knife, would you first use the diamond on each side (pointed side), then the flat side, followed by the white stone pointed side and flat side? I'm a little confused about the proper order. Thanks!
@NeilTheKnifeGuy
@NeilTheKnifeGuy 8 жыл бұрын
Yes that is right I would start with the diamond stones pointed side than the flat side followed by the grey stones pointed then flat then the white stones , pointed then flat. The pointed side removes metal faster than the flat sides.

Try reprofiling a knife with just the grey stones. Not sharpen....but actually repofile the edge from 20 degrees per side down to 15 or 10 degrees perside it would take that long. The stones just dont cut fast..... FACT!

Do you have to wash them after prolonged use like the white and grey stones require ???
@NeilTheKnifeGuy
@NeilTheKnifeGuy 9 жыл бұрын
You do have to wash them after a while but I clean these just with a damp rag or paper towel just because I don't know how the binder for the diamonds with react with prolonged water exposure. Works great and there definitely easier to clean then the ceramic rod's. Hope you're doing well brother.

I wonder what do you use lansky crock rods for if you already have Sharpmaker?
@NeilTheKnifeGuy
@NeilTheKnifeGuy 7 жыл бұрын
+LTN Steve really depends on my mood. Lol Also the lansky has a 20 degree and a 25 degree angle. The sharp maker has a 15 degree and a 20 degree. So it all depends on what angle and knife in trying to touch up.

So the angle of the Spyderco sharpmaker is 40 degrees inclusive, 20 degrees per side, or 30 degrees inclusive, 15 degrees per side, but their knives come with an 18 degree angle? Makes no sense.

either you have a microphone by your rods or you are using entirely too much force and I cannot imagine you having those diamond rods last unless your rods are far better than mine that I have had my diamonds since 2012 ??
