In regards to Luke 6:12, while it can seem confusing on the surface as to why Jesus (who is God) is recorded as praying to God, the answer is thankfully pretty simple. In this account, as well as other accounts throughout the Gospels, Jesus goes off to a secluded place to pray to God. We know that Jesus Himself is God in human flesh, he is the “God-Man” as some theologians refer to Him. So if He is God, who is praying to? The answer is that Jesus, who is God the Son, is praying to God the Father. We believe that there is only one God (Deut. 6:4). However we also believe that within the nature of the one, true, and eternal God, that there are three separate and distinct persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This is what Christians for the last two millennia have referred to as the “Trinity.” We believe that there is only one God, but within the one Divine Being, there are three separate co-equal, co-eternal Persons. Jesus is just as much God as is the Father and the Spirit, however Jesus is also fully human. While He was on the earth, He often prayed to God the Father and encouraged us to do the same. A perfect example of the Trinity as both one God and three Persons can be found in the account of Jesus’ baptism in Matthew 3:16-17. Jesus is present in the river, the Father speaks to Jesus from above, and the Spirit descends on Jesus in the form of a dove.
