Its no secret that Square Enix has not being the best the last few years. Only in the last year have they seen success with Final Fantasy XVI and Final Fantasy VII Remake & Rebirth. Now in 2024, the results are in for the first quarter and Square is taking a hit financially. Many are worried about what games will be canceled. Will they finally learn their lesson after the flops of live service and NFTs? We got a lot to discuss. Did Rebirth kill square? Was it ff16? Lets take a look!

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is an action role-playing game developed and published by Square Enix. It is a sequel to Final Fantasy VII Remake (2020) and the second in a planned trilogy of games remaking the 1997 PlayStation game Final Fantasy VII.
Like its predecessor, the gameplay combines real-time action with strategic and role-playing elements. Set immediately after Remake's events, players control mercenary Cloud Strife and a party of characters principally comprising the eco-terrorist group AVALANCHE, who embark on a journey across the Planet to prevent the megacorporation Shinra from exploiting its life essence, the Lifestream, as an energy source, and defeat former elite SOLDIER Sephiroth, who seeks to unite with the Planet to achieve greater power.
Final Fantasy XVI is a 2023 action role-playing game developed and published by Square Enix. The sixteenth main installment in the Final Fantasy series, it was released for the PlayStation 5. The game features segmented open environments and an action-based combat system involving melee and magic-based attacks. There are recurring series features including Chocobos for area travel, and summoned monsters called Eikons, which are both fought as bosses and used through channelling their power in combat.
Neo: The World Ends with You(stylized as NEO: The World Ends with You) is an action role-playing game co-developed by Square Enix and h.a.n.d. and published by Square Enix. It is a sequel to the 2007 video game The World Ends with You. It was released for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in July 2021 and for Windows in September. The story features a new cast of characters playing the Reapers' Game in Shibuya and, unlike the original game, features three-dimensional graphics.

We literally have a video coming in the situation. Also, the third part of Remake is likely coming as an exclusive still because the contracts were likely finished early this year. There is a chance for a “FFVII Collection” that drops on all platforms though!

The sources said Rebirth didn't meet SE's sales expectation but they aren't underselling or killed SE's sells. All those loses are from their half baked projects and 2 "triple A" projects that are dogshit. And also the CEO trying to invest to NFT's. Right now they are fixing the fiscal trainwreck that has been happening for the past years and the CEO of SE is resigning.

So, they lost 140 million in cancelled half-baked projects, including two Marvel games that got cancelled, one of which was because the movie it was based on also got cancelled and thus the rights make the game was lost. There was a forspoken 2 which got canned. We don't know what else there was, but many of them were with Square as the publisher not the developer. So games they were funding other studios to make.

@@watchmehope6560Ubisoft game are not repetitive cause of the do the same thing over and over, but because the activities,enemies, assets are always the same in this formula. Final fantasy rebirth has different and unique enemies even in those side moments, different activities like mini games, 7 different approach based on the character you are using in your party. Rewards are actually meaningful even for mini games, craft system is easy and gives the player a sense of progression. What the hell are you talking about?

I don’t even mind them adding in additional Compilation of FFVII elements but this meta-commentary purposely misleading stuff is just to generate discussion between games. They want the familiarity of the the OG but force in all this stuff that doesn’t jive with the original theme to tell a new story and they end up failing at both

Rebirth was the best ff game since ff8. The issue is solely related to platform exclusivity, the lack of ps5 systems for the longest time, and inflation in the usa. To give an understanding of how bad inflation is since remake came out. Crunchy roll sub was 8 dollars a month for premium, and now it's 17.99. I promise that the game would have sold better had it been multiple platform release.

Chrono Trigger, Octopath Traveler 2, Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy 6, Triangle Strategy, Dragon Quest XI S, and Star Ocean are my favorite games of Square. I haven't loved a Final Fantasy game since X.

If I were SE I would 1. Make sure numbered mainline FF and other AAA titles gets released on all platforms, PS,XB,PC and iterate on the game that came before it. Stop changing the game design for each new title. 2. Push out AA classic JRPG games (that they are known for) on Nintendo, PC, Mobile. 3. Invest heavily on FF14 and its MMO platform. Huge community, solid source of income and good for financial stability.

Modern S-E is hit or miss for me. For sure it is not what Squaresoft was, yet after Rebirth I have new hope for this company. That game was what I needed after games like Eleder Ring and Galdurs Gate 3. Dont get me wrong, ER and BG3 are good games but world presented there was so depresing and bleak. Amazing battle system of Rebirth was another thing. I cant get enought of it. But except FF16 I havent played anything from S-E this year, World Ends With You? This the first time I heared about it.

I love FF IX, FFVI, CHrono Trigger and even the hell-storm of FF XV! Just a fact that their pipeline is being changed for the better! They really need to bring the prices down on the PS5... It just costs to similar to a proper pc, which aren't nearly as pricey as they used to be. Good video over all though bro. Good work!

I think Square Enix need to revamp their marketing team. there are so many good gem that was ignored bcs of poor marketing. These past 5 year, the only times they are doing good job is when there is FF7 Rebirth trailer in State of Play where Cid, Vincent and Gold Saucer was revealed.

Square has always seemed to make bad investments for as long as I've played their games, coming in at nearly 3 decades with the original FF7. The company gets propped up by their really good selling games from time to time but they always tend to spend more time and money on their project than they budget for. This has resulted in the company nearly going bankrupt twice. If they didn't have so many talented devs to get through some of these rough patches, I doubt they'd still exist. Given their relationship, I'd imagine Sony would have jumped at the chance to buy them up had they not recovered from their many failed games during the 2010s. Who knows if that would have been a good or bad thing with the way things have been going in the industry now.

I think Square Enix cutting off project is somewhat a good thing. Back in 2022, they got me worried bcs Square Enix released to many games in 1 year. I remember they released more than 14 games in one year ! Some of that game is low budget and low quality game but sold $60. They prioritize quantity over quality. Imagine if Square Enix produce less game but higher quality with Valkyrie Elysium, Stranger of Paradise, The Diofield Chronicles. The IP wouldn't be dead on arrival

Rebirth at its best is an ok game that rides on nostalgia and great voice acting. At its worst it's a nuisance of a game that blunders the unthinkably easy. It's a bloated mess of a game. Filled with idiotic design choices and story changes that reek of unbelievable incompetence. They nailed the graphics, the voice actors and combat but everywhere else pooped the bed. It's a modern marvel that they nailed the hardest parts and completely dropped the ball on the easy stuff. Withholding characters to boost sales, splitting one game into three, taking a sledgehammer to an iconic story under nonsensical pretenses. Rebirth is in totality a blunder of hubris and blatant stupidity.

They didn't necessarily lose money but I'd wager investors made a gross overestimation of sales figures and ended up disappointed. It's why last gen tech is still being supported right now to keep investors happy and with Rebirth being only available on PS5 and Remake was released on PS4 and then PS5 they just overestimated projected sales numbers.

@@brieezy. oh that's alright. Investors just help fund the game and watch the stock portfolios of the company making the game. They also have a financial branch that create projections/predictions of game sales before the game releases and if the game doesn't sell what they predicted it would it causes an upset.

No, the real reason FF7 Rebirth and FF16 failed to each sales expectation is because Square made a deal with Sony to make their games exclusive to one console, instead of making the games multi platform, not everybody can afford a PS5, thankfully Square Enix is no longer doing exclusive games anymore which was the smartest decision they ever made, FF16 and FF7 Rebirth will soon be on the XBox and PC.

I like your optimism but knowing business people... I suspect there will be more pressure at Square to reign in the scope of FF7 part 3 as a result of this. I'm sure it will still be a good game but rebirth was honestly crazy in how ambitious it was. I don't think FF7 part 3 will have the same crazy ambition.

The bit of news that most concerns me is the part where Square says they're putting control of the projects less in the hands of the producers and more in the hands of business people. That basically means more rushed timelines. I'm sure it'll be good either way though.

One more reason why Square Enix good games don't sell well I can highlight is. Square don't give any importance to countries except EU, North America and Japan. Here in India last year wanting to get a copy of remake it took me 10 days of searching every game store in my state and website and I couldn't find a single copy. Now the same thing is with FF 16 and Rebirth.. And I imagine if they don't ship copies to India which is very near to japan what would be situation in Africa and other Asian countries. They are extremely bad in marketing and selling games that's what hurting Square and not the studios or games they make. I haven't heard about the World end with you game ever before. I regularly check you tube and gaming stores listing for new games and still I havnt heard about it. Square releases most games by a publisher in a year yet they dont have their own event. Square should either part with sony for major game releases and set up a world class marketing and shipping teams Or they should merge themselves to a better publisher like sony, ubisoft etc etc

Games like FF7R and FF16 deserve so much more. I think people like to bash SE for petty reasons. And maybe some more casual/mainstream people aren't ready yet to go from CoD/Spiderman and try something more unique. But as a whole for the games industry and the people that generally are very much into gaming. Would the gaming climate really be better without FF?

The first game in the trilogy failed to live up to the originals charm. The deviation in story, and the fact the game had now been split in three with added game padding to increase each games play time. Really turned a lot of people off. Personally turning FF7 into a multiverse nonsense story turned me off right away.

My favorite is ff7, love the remake trilogy. But I don't like the 3 to 4 year wait between the games, especially how they ended rebirth on such a cliff hanger. It was confusing and left you with too many questions. Still love it, those are just a few things I don't like about it.

It’s understandable why people don’t like the wait. But trying to make a full remake of 7 in one game would be like 300gb, probably take 7-9 years. one of the good things about splitting it up is getting to fix things from the previous. Like air combat from remake to rebirth Luckily 80% of the team stayed on so it should go faster than other games. -Tallen

That’s not always the case. Look at octopath traveler. They clearly have data that tells them about sales and then they determine if it’s worth going on certain system since making those ports cost money -Tallen

Ff7 remake is the 2nd most profitable game in the entire series and rebirth is already 14th and is going to continue climbing dramatically. Exclusivity did not hurt those games at all, if anything developing for 1 platform made them more polished. It’s all the other garbage they’ve released that has caused them trouble

The reason why Square Enix has not been performing good is because they moved way too fast to ps5 causing they sales to drop like people are still playing the PS4 and did not moved to ps5 lately. Plus there games have not been up to par lately they need to change tactics or I can seem them going bankrupt quick.

FFXVI and Rebirth might not be the cause of SE's downfall, but it helped contributing this situation. Don't forget that these two games probably costed 100m+ USD each to develop. Sony paid them some, but SE also lost the opportunity to reach more customers and expand the fanbase for the FF series that has been losing popularity in the past 10-20 years. New gen of gamers don't even care about this franchise. The FF brand needs to reach newcomers more than ever before and limiting it to just one console that isn't dominating the market doesn't help. New gen of gamers don't prefer home consoles, and they have short attention, so making FFVII even more complicated than the original and Kingdom Hearts also doesn't help.

Sounds like a waiting game for Square. Early sales might not be important, especially with a small exclusivity window. If it is a three months wait to cross-platform, many might be waiting willingly

The industry is oversaturated, they need to cut down all the other projects and focus their manforce on their big IPs. New IPs cant compete with the high competition. They could make more money if they release FF titles sooner than what they are doing it now, just like the golden era of 1x FF per year. Probably means they will give us remakes of other titles sooner too

It could have been far worse. You want to my favorite square game? That would be FF6, followed by a tie with FFX and FF5. My thoughts are if they make a new FF game in the style of some of the older ones, like a good turn based one, then it would massively well.

of course not, the only thing hurting square is the mass amount of projects they try to undertake and all these new IPs like Forspoken and Babylons Fall which end up being a shit show. Rebirth is great and I only hear positive things from most people although the game does have a few issues personally but still its one of the greater releases by SE recently.

Overall Rebirth I a very good game. The mini games can be a little overbearing and the presence of queer/whiney NPCs added by Sweet Baby detract from the experience but didn't ruin the magic of this game

No, it’s “fans” are the ones killing Square. All of these crybabies asking for FF7 to be remade for decades, and then as soon as they get it. These people cry and complain about the small changes made to the story. Even though what they’re doing is literally the best of both worlds. Funny enough, these same people (purists) would be the same people to complain had they done everything exactly the same as the original.

They cancelled Driverclub with 5 millions units sold... I think it's harder to happen since it is a third party game, but impossible? No, 3-4 years a lot can happen. Do you remember the versus 13 Project? The game delayed for 10 years before it could happen.

They shot themselves in the foot. Making this a sequel of a Lore-heavy RPG that you have to know the whole compilation or watch 3 hour breakdown videos for, it’s alienating to most people. Rebirth has great production value and combat. It’s bloated (they probably were developing it like it’s still covid and ppl had 100’s of hours to play) and the story has spectacle but it’s convoluted and created for ppl to have discussions til the next game, not to actually answer the things it set up in the previous game and it doesn’t have the advantage of being a “bait and switch” like they did with Remake. Square in general has been a series of questionable, out-of-touch business decisions. They’ve just been riding the wave of FF 1-10 for decades now.

General audiences liked that game, core fans opinions be damned, a disliked and hated game doesnt manage to sell 10+ millions copies. Square Enix and harcore fans overestimated VII popularity with modern audiences , like I said modern gamers have no attachment to characters and world from a game released almost 30 years ago.

Sales were stellar because of the overwhelming hype surrounding the game being in development for upwards of 10 years. If anything, both ff13 and ff15 did the franchise a great disservice by damaging the brand name. I have many friends who hesitated picking up ff16 because of how bad and incomplete the story of ff15 felt and let's not even get into the button mashy gameplay

No, it is showing that Final Fantasy is in decline. FFVII Remake sold less than FFXV, FFXVI sold less than Remake, and FFVII Rebirth is selling less than FFXVI. If alarms aren't going off with this downward trend, then I don't know what to tell you. FFVII Remake had no real tail. Square Enix has the inability to grow its audience for its franchises right now. Its ironic that the two most successful games by SquareEnix (not Square or Enix before them) are Tomb Raider 2013 and Life is Strange, from the West.
