When talking about racing game developers, Square Enix wouldn't be anywhere close on that list. But once upon a time they were capable of making decent racing titles with Chocobo Racing and the main topic of this video: Racing Lagoon.

Hey, just wanted to thank you for the video! It was a very cozy watch down memory lane, even makes me want to replay the game. Full disclosure, I am one of the people credited on the localization! I was one of the consultants alongside Syd. I mention this because the localization team weren't actually fans of the game outright, and Syd and I were actually the main fans of the game who volunteered our time when we found out it was being localized. As for why it was localized, that's the best part to me: Hilltop just wants to bring more Japanese-exclusive games out of obscurity and give them the chance they deserve. Him and the team did such an amazing job, and seeing the game get taken apart reveals some fascinating detail as to just how far this team were trying to go in the tuner culture side of things. Thanks for bringing back those memories. It's genuinely appreciated. ❤

Yokohama WAS the street racing capital of Japanese hashiriyas. It's the central point of almost all famous landscape that you can think of when you think of 90s Japanese racing scene and it was also the defacto city of the Midnight Club. Yokohama branches out to the Hanaeda Line, the C1 loop, the Shinjuku-Shibuya Line, the Minato Line, the infamous Daikoku PA also lands on the Yokohama-Yokosuka Line and even goes as far as the Tokyo Bay Line. Thus with it being practically the central point besides Tokyo and where the path was the clearest both north and south, it became the main gathering point for almost every Midnight Club meetings and Bosozoku clubs of that period.

The game feels really like Black Box era of NFS but the writers became unhinged and write without the boundaries of sensibilities which become very awesome

The gameplay, while flawed at times, can get really satisfying when your car is an unstoppable force after enough time grinding and finding the right parts. Presentation and music was just top-notch for me. From the loading screens to the menu sound effects, it really gave a special kind of charm. Story? Ehhhh, I was throughly invested in it for 2/3 of it, but it just went in a completely different direction by the finale that it just kinda left a bitter taste in my mouth.

Fun fact, the some of the grand tourers uses nitrous for the drag race, it's a part that was (semi)cut from the game, you can tell by how fast they were at the start and noticably slowed down after awhile. One other notable cut parts accessible via gameshark-esque codes is wontec v12 which is the strongest engine in the game capable of reaching the hard cap of 501 km/h

I have a feeling it was just the engine and part combination they went for that gave them immense acceleration, but a locked up top speed which they got to before the finish line.

@@hk20000 It's been quite awhile so I might have remembered them incorrectly, but I somewhat remember that they would have sudden and drastic change in acceleration, like they would have a lower power than your car, launch much slower and then sudden a huge burst of speed immediately passing your car that have half their kg/ps ratio before a sudden drastic drop off in acceleration. Again, I might've remembered it incorrectly, but I don't think there are another cars apart from the select few (like the grand tourer boss) to have such a weird quirk as if they are equipped with nitrous

In terms of Racing Lagoon's story, I agree with you. A narrative with this much depth is properly not gonna be attempted in a racing/driving game because either the players would not care or they will backlash you for even doing something different (With a few exceptions). Besides that, a lot of racing games (AAA or Indie) are very simple, clean and straightforward (I don't blame the developers who do this, they work afterall).

Then they'll complain when the devs put the most basic, cliché, corny narratives, citing Most Wanted 2005 as the shining beacon of storytelling, praising all the flaws I've just mentioned as something not even Motomu Toriyama could concoct.

I didn't expect the video's gonna be 48 minutes, but I'm glad you enjoyed the game. The game is still unique with its gameplay concept till this day and honestly, I agree that a guide is needed for progression and best parts. The game wackiness is very fun especially you can shove Chevy V8 engine to a suzuki wagon 🤣👍 Also, to add the epilogue, if you completed ALL OF THE UNOFFICIAL RACES (Which is a pain) and visiting Kenzo every night, you'll get a monologue from Kenzo as a character development after the final race.

The whole game was a trip. Back then it was made around the same time as FFVII was made, so the whole "big corp doing bad things" theme was very popular. Thats the unique rage against the machine theme the Japanese had in the 90s, as the big corp ran the show and spent money like it's out of fashion, causing the big economic bubble to pop in the early 90s. To the average Joe there were theories and conspiracies as to what those crazy company suit men were doing with their astronomical profits during the bubble era. Also the whole mind control theme was also in FFVII. When Cloud became a mime and lost his mind due to exposure to the planet's life force. The story writing similarities between these two games was no coincidence. Too bad there was no Tifa Lockhart or Aerith waifu for this game.

This game reminds me of if Road Trip Adventure was more mature. It has similar ish ways of dealing with upgrades and the wacky customization. Although considering this game came out first.... I guess it should be the other way around.

This game was quite the ride lol, especially with the story but then again it's Square Enix so I expect a weird and wacky story lol. 🤣 That aside I do like the customization aspect, it reminds me a little of Choro-Q. You essentially get a car to play around with and you can add whatever parts you want, giving you some incentive to do stuff for better parts or car bodies. It's actually a really well put together game but as you said the story does get a bit weird after a while. Great video as always Dove, props to you and Sharicite for pushing out another banger video.

To this day, no other triple A company has ever made a racing game with this much customizability to their vehicles it's insane. I legit want to see a fucking Le-mans styled truck being raced hard against superminis, GT cars, and more. Goes to show how much you can do with unlicensed vehicles and low poly models.

I don't normally play racing games but I got Forza Horizon 4 recently on a whim. Every character is so painfully bland in their unskippable cutscenes. Like, I get that the cars are the stars but just thinking that it could have had even a fraction of the soul that Racing Lagoon has is physically painful.

I played a version of this game in Japan at one of the many arcades. It definitely was amazing because once you enter the car it rises and follows your commands via the steering wheel breaks etc…..

TBH that the story centers around sho is the kind of story that square was writing back then, that and the fact that this game was probably a side proyect you cant expect a super thought out story, as for gameplay, the first time i tried the game the driving was hard and i didnt try the game more than some races. I tried again and it just clicked to me. It has a ton of cars(even some rare variations like the r33 P-ride), parts, races, optional content (theres one scene that i have only seen once, that yuka is learning with the mechanic of bay area (4:17), and i haven been able to trigger it again) and its overall fun, and the intro movie music its just a banger.

Man, I missed the old Square Enix. They make at least 2 driving game (not counting Gravel since they're just publish them) and I know they're more into JRPG than racing so that's why both of Square's racing game didn't receive well. However I love when game company had a risk to make a unique game like this one. Such a shame AAA company play safe this time around.

You can. Bosozoku kit is, to my knowledge, applicable to every single body accessible in the game. So you can add it to bus and box truck body as well

17:36 The only two I can think of are either stealing a B16A or B16B out of a Civic, or if you can find it AND have the points for it, a 20-valve variant of the 4-AGE out of a blue VW Beetle (You'll probably want the latter as it's the only engine in the early game mated to a 6-speed transmission).

Damn, Squaresoft was at the top of their game back in the late 90's. They really mastered the multi angle approach to hooking people to their game, specially in genres outside of JRPGs which were their bread and butter. They knew they wouldn't match the racing of Gran Turismo so they added a story, human characters, tons of customization to cars both visual and performance wise and a huge amount of activities and modes besides regular racing. This would have been a hit in the early 00's for sure around the time Fast and Furious was all the hype in the west. Sad it came too late into the PS1 life and never got released outside of Japan. As a launch title for the PS2 it would have been legendary, but we got The Bouncer instead 😂😂

Yeah this game is like a top 5 for me. The only things holding it back is that reversing doesn’t work (this doesn’t really come up tho until like at the end of the game) and from a gameplay perspective the end isn’t that satisfying, even the secret one.

Although, the characters look like something that would come from Jojo Bizarre Adventure if JBA was in the 90s. Also, im pretty sure initial d was released back in 1998, so it's weird seeing keisuke drive an integra.

Wow, that's a long review! I heard just a tiny bit of this game, without caring much about it as it got never released elsewhere than in Japan. But, I must say this is quite an interesting take on the "CARPG" concept. I'm impressed by the customisation and the car roster. Plus, the graphics and handling seems not too bad for a PS1 game! I'm too curious to play this game now. But I don't know about the character design, feels way too weird to me xD

Literally i love MGS1. MGS4 as my Second or MGS3. MGS2 is my least. But i don't hate it. MGS4 Is like you said to me. Its the finsihing of the story. Its the end of its Legacy. And it was a great way to go out i feel. I can close the book on MGS4 because of how good it was Written.

SquareEnix is always wondering why their profits are going down and it's games like this, this era - they don't do ANYTHING inventive anymore. Just keep re-releasing old FF titles or remaking them (FF1, FF7, possibly FF9) and not doing cool, unique titles like this, Parasite Eve, Vagrant Story, FF Tactics, Einhander, etc. Especially with modern processing power, the games could be so amazing.
