is it harder to already have the holes and prongs made in the cast? or do you just prefer to do it by hand
@thediamondsetter6158
@thediamondsetter6158 Жыл бұрын
When I use my own calibrated diamonds i save a ton of time by making the layout with CAD and cast it. BUT if always depends which piece a make. If I make handmade forged earrings I don't save time by casting the white gold part, like in this video. Also always keep in mind - casted material is softer and not as fine-grained as rolled and forged metal. For that reason I also love to work from the scratch. Also good to know - if you make an exact calibration it is hard to "clean" up the piece, and harder to adjust the holes. For that reason I only shape the main form with the wholes - everything else is made afterwards - also the casting is easier and better if there are no tiny prongs etc.

You can do it - no problem! As goldsmith and setter i get and make a variety of different jewelry. If i choose to make it the traditional way i have to know how to make the layout and everything else. In my opinion it is essential to know every step before making the setters life bit easy by using 3D-models. You can justate every hole and prong. But mention - the grain-structure of a casted ring/piece will not that finegrained, as a rolled sheet or a forged ring. When i make jewellry i decide everytime what toos i use to het the best quality ❤️!

Great video any advice on setting diamonds into a stainless steel Rolex watch strap? Will tungsten carbide tools do the job? I have only ever set stones into precious metals this is my first attempt at steel. Did a little test run today and seemed fine just worried I'm going to start the job then be constantly re-cuting my graver and constantly re-sharpening my shank drill. Any advice would be much appreciated
@thediamondsetter6158
@thediamondsetter6158 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Aaron ! With stainless steel you have to mention the angle of the face . It will break easyly if it is too sharp pointed. I recommend an 70-80 ° angle of the face. The graver has to be reshaped more often than working with precious metals, but no reason to despair :) Yes - only tungsten carbide. KOMET manufacture great burs and drills ! it is also an advantage to make the beading tool out of carbide ( an old carbide bur ). Use an carbide round bur to shape the beading tool. It takes a little longer, because you work on carbide with a tungsten carbide tool. The whole work on stainless stelle takes a little longer. Like Platinum, when you use to work with gold :D. If you have questions, or a certain topic , just comment. I will try to make a video. Alle the best for this job !

@@thediamondsetter6158 great advice much appreciated especially the angle cut on the face of my graver. I've been doing this nearly 20 years now and you never stop learning! Confident in setting the stones was just worried about the unknown with my tools so thanks again 👍. However I don't want to bead off the grains with a graining tool I want to leave clean lines between the diamonds, I want to either burnish down the claws or use a hammer action on them any advice on this would be great. 👍
@aaronsmith1695

I would usually use a wedge type of tool to push down between the two opposite grains to devide them over partnering stones again because I'm working with (904L stainless steel) not sure if it will work? The advice is very much appreciated I have always gone by trial and error in the past with some advice like we all have in this line of work but really want to work out my method before I start this job, it's no easy job that's for sure gonna be very time consuming any tips to make it easier would be golden 😊👍

Aaron Smith just do it! 😁☀️. You have many years of experience. Yeah the same tool i use in this video. Make sure the stones are under the surface ( or plane to the surface), try to cut with a 60 degree graver ( or bigger ). If you like it geometric, i would suggest just to split the prongs. And cut the „channel“ between the beads with a flat graver. You can do it 🤘

How likely is a diamond to fall out? Also how much is each diamond worth?
@thediamondsetter6158
@thediamondsetter6158 3 жыл бұрын
The most important thing is, as you see in the video, that the material(bead or prong) is moved over the stone (girdle). It is impossible that a stone will fall out. For a stone to fall out you need forces against the prongs, time where the material is abrade that holds the stone in place or an great impact on the stone itself. If the stone gets damaged due that impact the pieces can fall out. Hard to say. In this quality from 15 to 20 Dollar per Stone.

power engravers are complely uneccessary unless engraving tough steel, such as gun steel - othe than that they serve one purpose only, to make money for those that sell them

I don‘t know where you‘ve been the last 10 years. With my setup I‘m 4 times quicker than the years without those machines. Combined with a microscope it is just mindblowing. Quicker and you can see what you do - especially with micro-pave. I learned everything without those kind of tools, i really know the difference. If you want to safe money, you can build yourself one - tere are a lot of amazing tutorials on YT. All the best and in advance - nice christmas holidays!
