Ramy's retirement is the saddest day in squash this century. He had so much left to give on court!

Ramy Ashour = the Hendrix of Squash. Outstanding talent, effortless brilliance, and humble too. 👏🏼

Love seeing john's huge wind up for his backhand and the subsequent missile, must be the hardest hit backhands on the tour.

Tony Tan it's something he wouldn't need to learn to do with the new style rackets. He was brought up playing with the old wooden frames. He was good to watch back in the day. He had a more "modern" style game

JW's BH wind up is actually terrifying!! You think he's going to splinter ball+racquet with those shots!

Ramy Ashour -- fresh out of junior ranks and playing like that against a *very* capable John White (no matter that White is in his early 30s)! As one of the commentators said at the end "I think he [Ashour] is another JK" (Jahangir/Jansher Khan). As an ancient Squash player, I've had the good fortune to see many of the the greats playing live (and here on SquashTV) -- such as Geoff Hunt, Jonah Barrington, Qamar Zaman, Rod Martin, Rod Eyles, John White and Jansher Khan (but, sadly, not Jahangir) I know it's blasphemous to say this, but I rate Ramy above the great JKs -- he has their skill, speed, court movement and tactics, but for me the big difference is his astonishingly quick hands. Watch videos of the JKs, and see them take many balls off the back wall -- not so Ramy, who will volley his opponents screaming shots with his 'magic wand', and still play a tight shot. What a tragedy that his chronic hamstring problem prevented him winning more tournaments -- when he is uninjured and match fit, he makes many of his contemporaries look second-rate. On top of all that, he is very entertaining to watch and a fine sportsman -- a credit to the game!

Peter Eedy I would love to see ramy play jansher or jahangir at each individual's peak, it would be the game of the century. Ramy's wonderful short front court game and fast hands vs the stamina and long game back court consistency of the JK's. I would suspect the lower tin and the new scoring methods play a large part on the tactics used and hence the style of play more likely to win. Ramy may not look so spectacular on Janshers court with the older 9 point scoring system and vice versa.
@petereedy6092

Cheers Tony -- Ramy vs JK (either or both) would be a wonderful match of contrasting styles -- attacking vs attritional Squash. Fair point you make about the lower tin and new scoring methods, both of which probably favour Ramy. However, I don't believe too many people would disagree that Ramy (and other modern players) play a more exciting form of the game
@apt981
@apt981 6 жыл бұрын
Ramy would never be able to be as quick if he played with the old rackets. If ether JK had the new rackets they would be just as quick with there hands.

thing i like about about jansher he just walked to the ball he could have had a cup of tea in one hand , 99 5 of them have to run to the ball , to me he was the 2nd best ever the first was hashim khan who one kept the rally going for 18 min
@peterhammer6915
@peterhammer6915 4 жыл бұрын
@@apt981 no, never. Ramys hands were always superior to both Jahangir and Jansher. The JK:s had other attributes in their game. Skillwise Ramy was on a different level.

Interesting to hear commentators lauding this kid and now knowing they were right..... and the best thing about Ramy seemed to be that he was so pleased to be playing. He looked to manage total concentration with total contentment; the brightest star of squash ever.

If u look at Johnny whites playing style u'll see that Ramy plays almost exactly like his predecessor. I'd say Ramy modeled his swing and shot making after White. Even his movement and preparation from the backhand back court is almost exactly the same

Johnny White, one of my faves! And he gets in some great shots - not just his usual bullets but also those feathery backhand drops. But Ramy's reflex volleys in that first game, yikes. Real phenom stuff. Stark contrast too with the previous Power-Ricketts match with its multi-minute rallies. This has to be one of the least attritional matches I've ever seen (at least in terms of the length of the points - not the intensity!).

With this two inch lower tin and these huge rackets, I can only imagine jansher and jhangir winning against opponets in minutes. I mean the two inches lowering of that tin makes a huge diffrence. It almost makes lower pickup impossible. And hitting winners easier. Back then you just can not go that lower from that far. Some youngsters think these guys would be able to compete those greats must kidding.

"as a coach there's nothing I could say to John White". Well surely you're a crap coach then? This game shows the start of the new great era of squash vs the last generation. John White was fun to watch but really low accuracy and consistency. Ramy and the new generation have speed accuracy and invention. Its a much more deadly combo.

Hi Mr Fish -- that commentator is Chris Robertson, former world number 2 and former England national coach for several years -- probably not a crap coach then ;) I took it as acknowledging that Ramy was on fire and there was little most opponents could do but be patient and hope he goes off the boil -- Ramy is a freak of nature

Don't get me wrong - I'd actually always liked John White, but after I watched this, all I can say is: "A so-called squash great plays a TRUE all-time squash great!" Ramy Ashour NEVER disrespected younger talented players like that. What a disgrace you are John Wallop-the-Ball (let's say) White (for lack of another suitable colour to describe a fading star and annoying brat! Still better than Nick Matthew, though, if that makes things any better)...!
