Thank you squash for removing the sponsorship. It saddens me that it took away time and effort I know you put into your sponsorships, let alone your videos. This is just one of many examples that you care about your subscribers, and it makes me glad to be one. Keep up the good work, and good luck! Loved the comparison here as well, and like always, the video's a banger!

A great point about a store is also to get acquainted with the feel. One terrible thing about building your keyboard online is that, unless you spend buying different switches to try them out, you don't know how it'll turn out.

It's awesome that a shop like that has popped up because it makes Custom Boards more accessible than ever, not having to wait for shipping times or anything makes people more inclined to try something out. If stores like this can pop up all around the world someday I would be very happy.

Mash is a great store! I've been there and their customer service was actually pretty amazing! But if you live around Malaysia or Singapore, I'd also recommend going to Mecha if you're going for a much higher end build since they have much more keyboards on display. Sick video tho Squashy!

These are like REALLY expensive Build-A-Bear Workshops, except...keyboards lol But it's really nice. Not only do you have a selection you can experience first-hand (one of the most costly things about this hobby is having to wade through all the noise to find what you like) BUT you can also ask questions to someone who is knowledgeable (you hope) on the subject and can guide you accordingly. The trick is scalability. Not everyone will want to get into customs, but I think if shops like this can provide solid entry-level boards to first time buyers, then it's serving a greater purpose. I would be curious to see what the churn rate is of those customers though. Are they enticed enough to go down the rabbit hole? Are they content with their one and only purchase until it breaks? Do they have a mild degree of regret?

well ive build a ''high end'' keyboard but the hobby is nothing more than building a kit, switches, stabs and keycaps. If you go in deeper you might lube your switches and stabalizers. For me the meaning of a custom keyboard is hand selecting your components, i don't see it as a bad thing being able to insta-buy the components you need in store and having the ability to try out different combinations before commiting to it.

My first impression on such shops is that I never thought they were a scam. I know that they were enthusiasts at heart, at least mostly, cuz I went to one and I've done the research, I believe as much as you, by myself. Some online stores also do this sort of thing, and they are equivalent in terms of honesty. Seriously, is it not an enthusiast if they personally handwrite the instructions what to do and not to do to the customer? This thing is still new, but the trend started very well

I think the biggest pro with these shops is you can try a whole buncha different switches and caps in a real life brick-and-mortar BEFORE even comitting a penny to whatever actuation force or keycap profile you desire. That plus the customer service is worth whatever markup they ask of you.

yeah... I don't see that store lasting much longer, unless they have a deal with keychron that can get them at least reasonable margins to survive.... Like PC margins at 2-5% isn't really feasible unless you're at mass scale.... And even then, everything has to be tip top shape... Hopefully keychron gets them something like 30-50% margins.

you forgot the most important thing: the Q1 has a south facing pcb while Akko did not and having keycap interference is the worst thing you can do at this price point
@aloysiuswong9146

That's only applies to cherry profile keycaps.. also there are many switches that are not affected by it... Or you could mod it.
@thanhanle3879
@thanhanle3879 Жыл бұрын
@@aloysiuswong9146 like why tho. Having south facing pcb means less worries about whether your switches/keycaps will interfere with each other. Also it's the end of 2022, many manufacturers already switched their kb from north-south facing pcbs without any increasing in prices. So why did you have to spend like 150$ for a north facing board like Akko Mod ?
@aloysiuswong9146

for $200, keyboard should be wireless capable with aluminum body. The only difference in sound is that the shop-made keyboard, is the springy sound and a bit more "tack" sound. It's not those almost quiet "tok" sound. Would I spend $200 for a keyboard? Nope. I can buy a good keyboard with bluetooth and 2.4ghz connection for $100 or less, then spend the other $100 for a good mouse and a wrist rest.
