So what I’m getting from your summary is that: In this world we’re in Mankind has gone to shit as nothing but grief and despair ravage the land as everyone begs either for forgiveness for what they had to do to survive or demands punishment for those who have wronged them. Hearing these overwhelming cries for penance some entity is spawned or responds by sending the miracle to punish them for their sins. At first it goes well as people are being rightly punished for their sins but then the entity or the miracle itself decides to communicate with one of the humans. This starts a religion of Masochism similar to Christianity but the priests get more and more corrupt as it seems that those who follow in the footsteps of his holiness do not undergo the punishment of the miracle as if it were playing favorites. While they are still punished it’s almost never as bad as those who are not part of the congregation so more and more join and soon the Miracle or the entity sees the corruption within the church and stops communicating with the church. This leads to an age where no one is being punished for their misdoings as they all cry out for it. This leads to the age of the turned throne where because Escrobar believes that the miracle has stopped punishing people meaning he could whatever he wants. The cries of the people and the sins of the church then pile up and the miracle sends the biggest punishment they’ve ever seen like a Masochist begging the Sadist to “Hurt me more daddy”. Resulting in Escrobar becoming a tree, being revived and given a form that supposed to torment him for all the sins he’s committed and the release of a horde of monsters that ravage the land killing or torturing the humans. After decades of fighting and torture the people’s cries turn to those of forgiveness rather than punishment so the entity allows the miracle to stop only if they can climb the pile of ash and regain control of the turned throne. Many try and none succeed until we get to our protagonist. Ending 1: Even though he was chosen by the miracle to take the throne the sins of the people are to great to overlook and he fails letting the punishment of Humanity continue forever. Ending 2: The penintant one manages to climb the hill of ash as this means that humanity’s worthy of forgiveness and so kills himself in order to seal away the miracle but Castanta wants the punishment of humanity to continue and so pulls the sword out of him hoping this would break the seal and let the Punishment continue.

Just an FYI, this video was made before the Stir Of Dawn and Wounds of Eventide DLCs came out, both of which added some story stuff that didn't exist yet when this video was made. Mainly, it established that Crisanta is the captain of the Anointed Legion by Esdras' new dialogue before the battle on the Bridge of Three Calvaries. This explains why Crisanta is so opposed to the Penitent One's quest (he is destined to usurp Escribar, who she must protect), as well as why Esdras wants to stop the Penitent One (to prove himself to his captain).

So I was playing the game yesterday and I received an item that made me laugh out loud because I wasn't sure if it was a dark souls reference or not. It's called ember of the holy cremation. It basically reads in the description that the ember is from a distant land from a bonfire.

I first learned about this game about a month ago, and its lore and design completely enchanted me. I'm glad this video released when it did, and I'm glad that you would be the one to make it

1:55 as far as I know, the boy didn't become the tree, he became The Twisted one (the one in Mea Culpa's hilt), contorted and twisted in the trunk he set while he prayed for punishment. LATER that tree grew in the same spot, with 3 intricate trunks where gold flows and etc.

Thank you for making the story clear to me. When I first played Blasphemous, I wasn’t exactly sure what it was about, because the story was kinda vague. And other videos I’ve seen only explained so much. But thanks to you, now I have a somewhat full understanding of the story and what exactly is going on in this game’s world.

...and I agree with your final thoughts about the story being hard to follow. I even changed the language to Spanish to see if it would be easier to follow due to the catholic aspects of the game, and while Spanish would be the ideal language suited for the iconography of the game (kinda like most anime), the story kept being hard to follow. I also thought that, since I grew up catholic and went to catholic school all my life, the story would be familiar in some sense, well, it does not lol. It just takes the penitence and suffering of catholicity into a thick mess of everything with everything on top. So thanks for the video, I enjoyed the game a lot specially the music but I wouldnt recommend it to everybody, just metroidvania fans that like gothic/dark stuff. Cheers!

I really like what you've done on this channel. Your examinations and summaries are a rare blessing. If it's not too much trouble, would you consider checking out Fire Emblem Three Houses, or at least watch a bit of it? When you get past the anime aesthetic, there are interesting stories and deep, morally grey characters. Especially on the four different routes the game takes. It could really suit your style, and be a popular game to dissect.

I didn't understand what was going on at first but it started making more sense the second play through. I love the way they talk in the game and the story is interesting and like no other. Really cool concept to compliment a fun and gorgeous game. You're explanation makes sense but I'm going to dig into it more.

In my understanding, the Miracle is this entity that is extremely pure in terms of morality, as i remember the entirety of Custodia was incredibly devious and crazy bad thus the Miracle punished them, and as in the video some people WANTED to be punished thus the Miracle did so. I remember a theory in which that the Miracle really does wanna be stopped from punishing them, thus the penitent one going to the throne, so basically you have a karma system for a god who punishes or blesses you based on what you do, and what you want it to do to you.

It's not an overly long game or terribly complex, but about half way through I realised I had no idea what I was trying to achieve. I knew what my objectives where and pretty much where I needed to go, but the language sort of made it unclear at times and I hadn't been paying quite enough attention. Smough's videos informed me a bit more after completing the game but this summary was really good. I didn't even realise that the Penitent One was actually serving the Will (or WIlls?) of the Miracle in the first place. Musta missed that part, but it makes way more sense to me now.

The Miracle is a monster. Why would anyone worship and protect such a cruel and blatantly evil creature. I'm surprised they don't spend every waking moment trying to destroy the demon.

Thank you for this summary. I will say that this is an interesting story, with a legitimately gorgeous presentation. The art style is a good blend of pixel art and religious artistry, and the orchestral score fits the setting perfectly. It’s also clear that the voice actors gave their best as well. My problem is that the whole story is told with lots of purple prose, even in the item descriptions on the inventory screen; the story becomes even more confusing with its grim-dark tone, which makes you wonder which characters are good or evil; not in a morally ambiguous way, but as basic characters. I believe this game needed to just cut out the padding and tell its story in a much simpler delivery.

I will say, in the playthrough I watched, everything happened the same way but Crisanta didn’t show up in the end. I’m assuming I saw a different ending. Probably the better one considering that her actions bring the sacrifice of the Penitent One to naught. 😊

Gonna stop you right off the bat. Escribar didn't turn his back to the congregation because he lost faith in The Miracle, he turned his back because he lost faith in the congregation, and believed that the reason The Miracle no longer spoke to him was because the congregation was no longer seeking penance in earnest, but simply going through the motions and paying lip service to seeking penance. He turned his back to them in disgust, and prayed to The Miracle to deliver true penance onto them, and the Miracle andwered by turning Escribar into the massive tree, and then into the Pile of Ash. When the congregation saw that Escribar's throne was vacant atop the Pile of Ash, they coveted his position and authority, and attempted to climb the Pile of Ash, only to be weighed down by their sins, submerged in the ash, and converted into the first monsters.

Best metroidvania/2d Souls-like over the past few years.

Let me make this clear, so Cresanta is like The Angel who sent by The Miracle so she tested The Penitent One, and The Penitent One is succeeded. From the ending scene I guess she didn't like that the person who she was tested and likely abandoned by The Miracle ones before, became the god himself (I presummed that because after The Penitent One died as commune between Custodian and The Miracle, the Custodian likely worship him as a False God). But the truth is Custodian just makes him like a Saint not God, so its like Cresanta misunderstand that concept. She did the ultimate sin worst than Escobar, "The Blasphemous Act" or blasphemy and because of that she become The Fallen Angel and she has goal to rebel against who worships the False God. This ending will make a good story for making Blasphemous 2 🤣👌 PS : its just a theory of mine 😗
